S1 Ep 53Cult of Self: Living in the Age of Narcissism

We have witnessed an unprecedented focus on the self for the past few decades. This focus has permeated society, mainstream spirituality, and the ACIM community. Circle founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington call this "the cult of self" and in this podcast episode, they explored what it is, its effects, how we can spot it, and what we can do to resist its lure.

S1 Ep 52The Pull of God

In the old days, it was "a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." Now, we just worry that it's unsatisfying. A Course in Miracles teaches that it is neither. The Course says that at the foundation of our being we feel an irresistible attraction to God, which it calls "the pull of God." Join Robert Perry and Emily Bennington for a lively discussion of this important but little-known teaching.

S1 Ep 51Is Belief in God Necessary?

"God" is a word that appears throughout the pages of A Course in Miracles. But how important is it for us to believe in God? Do we have any real evidence that God exists? Is belief in God necessary for making progress on the spiritual journey? In this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, Circle founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington discuss these questions as well as what the Course has to say about the nature of God, how He loves us, why the Course isn't strictly a nondual path, and much more.

BONUS: What is the Story Project?

The Circle Story Project is a collection of real-life stories that exemplify Course principles, ranging from profound experiences and unusual phenomena to more everyday inner shifts. In this bonus episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, Circle founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington talk with Story Project leader Sue Pearson and editor James Gregory about how the Story Project was formed, how to make a submission, and how stories can be used to share the Course with the world. Sue and James also read one of their favorite stories from the Story Project archives, including a powerful testimony of finding the Course from a traditionally Christian background. S1 Ep 50How to Rise Above Our Anger

What is anger? What causes it? How can we be relieved of it? Is it a force of its own that we can either bottle up or let flow through us? Or is it the result of something we ourselves are freely doing? For answers to these questions and more, you are invited to join Robert Perry and Emily Bennington for an in-depth look at anger as it is discussed in A Course in Miracles.

S1 Ep 49Holy Week Preview

The time between Palm Sunday and Easter is widely known as 'Holy Week'. For many raised in Christian traditions, this has been a sacred week which is rich in ritual, meaning, and emotion, all of it building up to the joy of Easter. Course students from other traditions may not have any associations with Holy Week at all. Regardless of your background, wouldn't it be wonderful to celebrate Holy Week under the umbrella of A Course in Miracles? In this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, Circle of Atonement founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington explore how we can celebrate Holy Week in a new way. As the Course says, "Let us not spend this holy week brooding on the crucifixion of God's Son, but happily in the celebration of his release." You can register to watch these podcast recordings for free on our events page and participate via Zoom. Go to circleofa.org/events for details.

S1 Ep 48Where is the Feminine in ACIM?

Course students have long struggled with the fact that the feminine seems entirely absent from the pages of A Course in Miracles. God is "Father." The Holy Spirit is referred to as "Him." We are all called "Sons." Other people are called "brothers." In this podcast episode, Circle founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington speak about what this means while also highlighting examples of where the feminine does appear in the Course. S1 Ep 47Was Helen's Editing Guided?

As the Course community has become aware that far more editing was done in the Course than was previously known, the idea has grown up that all of this editing—done primarily by Helen Schucman—was guided. In other words, just as the dictation was from Jesus, the editing was too. That's a comforting idea, but we don't have to speculate about this. We can see literally thousands of editing decisions that Helen made. What story do those decisions tell us? In this podcast episode, Circle founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington will answer the important question "Was Helen's editing guided?"

S1 Ep 46What Does the Course Say about Boundaries?

We all know healthy boundaries are important. Long before boundaries were celebrated as an essential part of self-care, Robert Frost wrote, "Good fences make good neighbors." And yet, as Course students, the topic of boundaries brings up many significant questions: How do we reconcile boundaries with the spiritual teaching that we ultimately have no boundaries, that the lines between us are a fiction of the mind? When does an emphasis on setting boundaries get in the way of the supreme value of love and forgiveness? How would the Course advise us to enact a boundary or even to end a relationship? In this podcast, Circle founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington share what the Course has to teach us on this very important topic.

S1 Ep 45The Course's Christmas Story

We often think of Christmas as the celebration of Jesus' birth in the world. The Course has its own take, however, one that celebrates a holy birth within all of us. In this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, Circle of Atonement founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington share an encapsulation of the Course's Christmas teachings and how we can all apply them to our lives. S1 Ep 44Today Let Us Be Thankful

A Course in Miracles contains 325 references to gratitude and thanks. Circle founder Robert Perry has compiled these references, pulled out the main themes and what we are left with is a truly unique and loving approach to practicing gratitude. In this episode of Exploring a Course in Miracles, Robert and Executive Director Emily Bennington take a closer look at these teachings that offer us practical guidance on what the Course says it really means to be grateful. S1 Ep 43Our Vision for the Circle and for A Course in Miracles

When it comes to spirituality, so much of the focus is on how we ourselves can benefit. Does this practice bring us peace, are we feeling healthier and more motivated, etc. As students of A Course in Miracles, we all have personal goals we hope to achieve through this path, but have we ever stopped to consider what the Course's goals may be? Have we ever wondered whether the Course itself has a purpose to achieve in the world and how we can help it get there? At the Circle of Atonement, we hold a vision for the Course that is based on guidance Helen Schucman received just a few months before the book was originally published. In this video, Circle founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington share this guidance as well as the Circle's plans for 2022. If you'd like to learn more about our vision for the Circle and the Course, we invite you to visit www.circleofa.org/vision.

S1 Ep 42Should We Seek to Change the World?

A Course in Miracles famously says "Seek not to change the world" and even declares "There is no world!" What, then, do we do as Course students about trying to save and heal the world? This question came vividly to the fore when bestselling author and Course teacher Marianne Williamson ran for President of the United States in 2019 and continues to strike a chord to this day. Within the Course community, some students see involvement in the world as an abandonment of Course principles while others feel it is an extension of them. But what does the Course itself teach? In this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, Circle of Atonement founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington discuss this topic with Marianne herself. S1 Ep 41The Lost Section on Looking at Our Fear

A Course in Miracles is a sacred text. Any edits or changes of any kind are not done so lightly. And so, the addition of the lost section, The Journey into Fear, is a significant thing and it's one we are excited to share with you. In this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, join Circle founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington for a lively discussion on not only this new section of the Complete and Annotated Edition of A Course in Miracles (CE) but also on a discovery Robert has recently made. Within the journals Course co-scribe Bill Thetford kept in 1966, there are connections with this new material. NOTE: Exploring A Course in Miracles podcasts are recorded live (typically every other Monday at 11 am Eastern) and then released on YouTube and various podcast outlets including iTunes and Spotify. S1 Ep 40Vaccine Guidance from Helen's Notes

In the early weeks of the Course's dictation, Helen Schucman received three pieces of guidance about whether her co-scribe Bill Thetford should get a flu shot. At the time, there was even the possibility of the flu becoming an epidemic. Today, with the coronavirus pandemic continuing into its second year, the beauty of this guidance is that we have Jesus directly addressing how to respond to a situation that is surprisingly close to our own. In this podcast, Circle founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington cover the guidance Helen received as well as addressing some of the questions being raised within our community about how we can apply this guidance to the current pandemic. NOTE: Exploring A Course in Miracles podcasts are recorded live (typically every other Monday at 11 am Eastern) and then released on YouTube and various podcast outlets including iTunes and Spotify. S1 Ep 39Bill Thetford's Journal

A Course in Miracles Co-scribe Bill Thetford kept what appears to be a journal of Course application for two months—August and September—in 1966, just shy of a year from when A Course in Miracles began coming through (in October of 1965). The value of this journal is that it affords us a glimpse of what it looked like to Bill—and clearly to Helen Schucman to a degree as well—to apply the Course in daily life. In this episode of our Exploring A Course in Miracles podcast, Robert Perry and Emily Bennington share 11 examples from Bill's journal that give us a window into the inspiring ways in which he sought to practice the course. You can access a copy of Bill's journal at circleofa.org/bill. If you'd like to join our live podcast recordings via Zoom or Facebook, you can register HERE.

S1 Ep 38An Interview with Carol Howe

As a close friend of A Course in Miracles co-scribe, the late Bill Thetford, Carol Howe authored an intimate account of Bill's life entitled, Never Forget To Laugh: Personal Recollections of Bill Thetford, Co-Scribe of A Course In Miracles (https://amzn.to/3qD1pi5 - affiliate link). An elder within the ACIM community, Carol is still actively teaching ACIM, and in this fascinating conversation with Robert Perry and Emily Bennington, she offers insights into Bill's life and practice, as well as the relationship with Helen Schucman which was so fundamental to the Course's origin. S1 Ep 35Jesus' Life as an Example of Course Principles

The life of Jesus has moved people the world over like no other. But we have often put Jesus' life in a frame where the main purpose was to demonstrate his divinity. What if we put it in a different frame? What if we see Jesus' life as a concrete demonstration of the principles of A Course in Miracles? Seen that way, what would his life—with all its drama, its miraculous events, and its revolutionary elements—tell us about what it means to live the Course? We hope you will join Robert and Emily for a discussion on what inspiration and guidance we can we gain from Jesus' example in our own lives. ** FREE Gift - Guidance Journal ebook for students of A Course in Miracles ** ACIM places a great deal of importance on guidance. What does Jesus do for us?

A Course in Miracles calls us to go places we seemingly can't go. How, then, do we get there? One answer is that we lean on Jesus' help. The Course teaches that Jesus is genuinely present, and that we can lean on his strength, his guidance, his healing, and his companionship. This naturally brings up many questions: Does he really exist? Is he available to us personally? How do we call upon his help? What things do we turn to him for? What things should we not turn to him for? Please join Robert and Emily as they discuss these vital questions for our journey with the Course. ** FREE Gift - Guidance Journal ebook for students of A Course in Miracles ** ACIM places a great deal of importance on guidance. S1 Ep 33The Sex Material

In the Complete and Annotated Edition of A Course in Miracles, there are some challenging teachings on sexuality. Students have been grappling with these teachings ever since they first came to light approximately twenty years ago. It's easy to see these teachings as merely negative (Don't have sex unless….) when, in fact, they are actually pointing us to another way of being in the world, one where we engage in "miracle-inspired relating." Listen to Robert Perry and Emily Bennington's fascinating discussion of the Course's teachings on sex, which was originally broadcast live via Facebook. (Find out details of their next live broadcast by following the Circle of Atonement's Facebook page - www.facebook.com/circleofatonement). If you'd like to read the materials referenced in this discussion, they can be found in the Complete and Annotated Edition of ACIM, under Miracle Principles 18, 43, 46, 48, and Cameo 11. BONUS: Projection as a Worldview (Workshop Preview)

The idea of projection is familiar to us all: You see in others that which you don't want to see in yourself. But is it possible that projection is responsible for our whole perception of the world? This is the startling prospect that A Course in Miracles lays before us - but this is also good news, because understanding projection gives us the power to undo its distortions and thus liberate our perception. Robert and Emily are hosting a workshop on this topic called Maybe It's You: Understanding Our Relationship with Projection and this bonus episode is a preview of what to expect. S1 Ep 32What if you can't be hurt?

We can all relate to feeling unfairly treated. And when we're hurt, we naturally want to let other people know - especially those who we feel are responsible. A Course in Miracles offers a unique understanding of the unconscious psychology behind feeling unfairly treated. It promises that if we can understand what's really going on inside of us, we can be free of hurt itself. In this episode, Robert and Emily explore this idea and discuss how we can stop showing people a damaged picture of ourselves and show them our healing instead.

BONUS: Teach Only Love: Rising to the Challenge of Our Time with A Course in Miracles

Times like these call us to be better people. They call us to be anchored within so that we can respond with love and helpfulness to the world outside. This may seem like a distant goal, but this is precisely where A Course in Miracles can help. The Course is known for its unique wisdom and its practical exercises, all of which are aimed at helping us meet a stormy world in a new and different way. Regardless of where you are in your Course journey, we know you will benefit from the Course's teaching on how we can truly advance on our spiritual path, and be the people we are called to be in the new year and beyond.

S1 Ep 31What does the Course say about hate?

It's clear that, all around the globe, we have a hate problem. As spiritual seekers, we tend to shy away from using the word hate, but that's what it is. And until we face our hate directly, it will remain a destructive force in us and in the world. A Course in Miracles doesn't shy away from the word "hate" and its cognates, which appear over 200 times in the book. Accordingly, the Course is well equipped to help us heal the hate within us. In this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, Robert and Emily offer practical tools for facing and rooting out the hate in our hearts so that we can heal it in our world.

S1 Ep 30Can We Choose Love in an Insane World?

As we look around at the world today, insanity appears to be everywhere. In such a place as this, how can we choose love? According to A Course in Miracles, we face this choice between insanity and love at all times. The question is only which direction we will go. Will we decide that the world is sane or that love is sane? Will we adjust to a world that makes no sense, feeling that we must fit in? Or will we buck the system and choose to love like God loves? In this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, Robert and Emily discuss how we can all stand for love in an insane world.

Nov 16, 202039 min

S1 Ep 29Your Brother's Holiness

How should we see other people? Perhaps the Course's main answer to this question is that we should see them as holy. Holiness is a hugely important concept in A Course in Miracles, which contains over a thousand references to "holy" and "holiness." Yet we don't talk much about holiness, do we? Perhaps we find it slightly threatening, because of its religious connotations. But the fact that we find it threatening also means that it's powerful. Given what a powerful concept it is, imagine what it would mean to see another person as holy. What would it mean to see everyone as holy, no matter what that person is like or may have done? In this episode, Robert and Emily explore the power and significance of seeing our brothers as the Course would have us see them.

Nov 2, 202048 min

S1 Ep 28The Hidden Belief in Specialness

When it comes to the topic of specialness, the Course is challenging something in us that we have hoped to keep forever hidden and safely undisturbed. The goal to achieve "special favor", the Course says, is what originally drove the separation and it's what drives us now – to disastrous effect. Accordingly, the reason we all hide our quest for specialness, even from ourselves, is the very reason we need to give it up: Specialness puts us at war with all our brothers. It therefore makes us fundamentally alone. In this episode, Robert and Emily have a very candid discussion on facing our addiction to being special - human race's guilty secret—and how we can let go of this need in recognition of our equal holiness and worth.

Oct 16, 202039 min

S1 Ep 27In Defense of Reason

Contemporary spirituality constantly tells us that we have to get out of our mind and into our heart. We hear again and again that in order to spiritually awaken we need to "turn off our thinking" and enter into being. A Course in Miracles, however, teaches that sound reasoning is not the enemy of spiritual development, but rather a central tool in the process. In this episode, Robert and Emily discuss why the Course considers logic and reason among the most powerful means we have for dispelling ego-based emotions that seem to have us in their grip.

Oct 5, 202036 min

S1 Ep 26Traditional Monastic Pursuit in the Context of Contemporary Society

Monastics are defined in part by their withdrawal from ordinary society as well as by such outer things as distinctive clothing, specific daily schedules, special diet, and other symbolic accoutrements. Yet if we set aside these forms of difference, monasticism has more in common with the Course than you might suspect. The driving force behind monasticism is that it shoots for the highest spiritual attainment possible. Further, it recognizes that this spiritual summit is so valuable, so precious, that the climb deserves all of us—-heart, mind, body and soul. In this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, Robert Perry and Emily Bennington discuss how we can use the discipline and structure of monastics as a model and an inspiration for our own practice everyday.

Aug 31, 202042 min

S1 Ep 24The Social Vision of A Course in Miracles

If the title of this article strikes you as odd, you are not alone. People familiar with A Course in Miracles don't usually think in terms of its social vision. Doesn't the Course urge us to "seek not to change the world"? Isn't our sole responsibility to accept the Atonement for ourselves? Isn't the Course strictly about how we perceive the world in our own minds? We at the Circle have been arguing for years that the Course is deeply concerned with our role in uplifting the world, and that it even sees us carrying out this role through a great deal of "busy doing". In this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, Robert Perry and Emily Bennington discuss how we can use our own lives to become an "oasis in the desert" and achieve Jesus' vision of social change.

Jun 29, 202043 min

S1 Ep 23A Course in Miracles' "Hidden Figure"

We are living through an unprecedented moment in history. It's a moment where pockets of the world have been willing to finally look at the gaping wound of racism and what it's doing to us. As Americans, we know this wound is a central part our origin story but what feels different about this time is the degree to which those who are outside the black the community are willing to not only examine white privilege, but willing to examine its contribution to the dishonoring and disenfranchisement of our black brothers and sisters. This includes acknowledging the ways in which contributions from the black community to so much of what we take for granted, and so much of what we consider sacred, have been undervalued and unappreciated. The movie "Hidden Figures" captured this concept in the story of three black women who were behind very successful missions at NASA, and whose stories were not widely known until recently. A Course in Miracles has its own "hidden figure" and that's what we talk about in this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles with our guest Freedom Cartwright. All of us at the Circle wish to thank Freedom and Laura Yates Campoli for their dedication to bringing this story to light.

S1 Ep 22Healing Childhood Wounds

Given how persistent and formative childhood wounds can be, unearthing them can seem to be the way to explain who we are now. The early dictation of the Course addressed this issue at some length, as it turns outs, and the perspective that emerges is one that you might find surprising. Join Robert and Emily for a lively discussion of how the Course would have us approach the healing of childhood wounds.

May 18, 202044 min

S1 Ep 21The Power of Words in A Course in Miracles

To a significant degree, the Course is resting the achievement of its goals on our repeating of its words. The Workbook, for example, opens by saying that "it is doing the exercises that will make the goal of the course possible" (W-pI.In.1:2) and each exercise includes some form of word repetition. In this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, Robert Perry and Emily Bennington discuss why this is the Course's main practice and how to claim the gift that its words contain for us.

May 4, 202040 min

S1 Ep 20The Creative Impulse

As spiritual seekers, we tend to see our job as getting out of the way so that divine light can flood in and fill our awareness. Accordingly, we typically see the spiritual life as the process of becoming ever more receptive and surrendered. Yet there is also another side to our nature that is actively expressive and creative. In this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, Robert Perry and Emily Bennington dive into the fundamental urge in us to create - to take something valuable and precious inside us and express it on the outside – and why the Course says we are "unfulfilled" until we do.

Apr 20, 202034 min

S1 Ep 19Where Can I Go for Protection?

Given that protection is on everyone's minds these days, it makes sense to look into what A Course in Miracles has to say on the topic. How, according to the Course, can we find protection? It turns out that the Course mentions protection 237 times and that these references add up to a fascinating picture, one that turns our normal ideas of protection upside down. Join Circle of Atonement Founder Robert Perry and Executive Director Emily Bennington for a discussion where we can go for protection, which has our current challenges very much in mind.

Apr 6, 202043 min

S1 Ep 18Within the Victim, the Victimizer

What is the relationship between the victim and the victimizer in you? If you're like most people, you may feel you only become defensive when you feel like a victim yourself. We, in other words, never attack first. In this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, Robert Perry and Emily Bennington discuss the Course's (very different) approach to this topic, which many students find challenging at first - but in the end is quite liberating.

Mar 23, 202049 min

S1 Ep 17The Way Helen Prayed

In the early part of the Course's story, there are at least three instances where its scribe, Helen Schucman, prays for others in an unusual way. On these occasions, she is joining with Jesus and speaking directly to someone in her mind. In this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, Robert Perry and Emily Bennington discuss Helen's unique style of prayer and how we can all use it to help ourselves and others adopt a healed point of view.

Mar 9, 202045 min

S1 Ep 16The Senselessness of War (Part 2)

In the previous episode, Robert and Emily talked about the Course's radical view of war—that, rather than being good or evil, war is simply senseless. But knowing this is merely a starting point. What we really need to know is how we ourselves should respond to war. That is the subject of this second episode: What is our role in relation to war? To answer that question, Robert will share six points gleaned from A Course in Miracles. Through these points we will discover the surprising relevance of war for our personal lives. For ultimately, there is no difference between wars in distant countries and the small wars we wage every day in our homes and workplaces. We are all combatants on the battlefield, and we all can choose to rise above it and become a force for peace in a world that desperately needs it.

Feb 25, 202059 min

S1 Ep 15The Senselessness of War (Part 1)

What does A Course in Miracles have to say about war? Does it even address the subject? In fact, the Course contains over a hundred references to war and battle, along with many depictions of warfare and weaponry. In addition, there are hidden references to two wars in particular: World War II and the Vietnam War. Through it all, a consistent view of war emerges, which is radical and challenging, yet which should be no surprise if we believe that the Course really comes from Jesus, the one who told us "resist not evil" and who went willingly to his own death. This view includes war as we think of it—war between countries—yet its main focus is on the battleground that we call daily life. Join us for a discussion of one of the central issues in our lives and in this world: the issue of war.

S1 Ep 14Three Habits the Course Wants Us to Form

Forming new habits sounds like a very mundane issue, hardly one we expect to see in the pages of A Course in Miracles, yet the Course mentions "habit" or "habits" seventeen times. Out of these references, a fascinating pattern emerges of why we need new habits, what new habits we should form, and how we form them. One of the most striking things is that three habits in particular are mentioned again and again. Join us for a discussion of a topic we may not have associated with the Course, but one that has surprising relevance for our lives and our journey to God.

S1 Ep 13The Root of All Human Inequality

Inequality may seem like a strictly social issue, far from the concerns of the spiritual path. Yet according to A Course in Miracles, the desire and attempt to be unequal—above others—is at the very center of the ego. It was the root of the separation and even now it drives our personal lives. The inequality we see on a social level is just the end result of masses of individuals striving to be above their fellows. In the face of this universal desire, the Course teaches a radical equality, in which, despite all our surface differences, we are all inherently equal. This even includes history's most "superior" individual: Jesus. Join us for a discussion of this central issue, in which we explore the ego's need for inequality, why it backfires, and how we can apply the truth of our fundamental equality in our relationships and daily interactions.

Ep 12What is Vision in A Course in Miracles?

The Course tells us that its goal is true perception, which it also calls Christ's vision, or usually just vision. All our learning, all our study and practice, all our forgiveness, all our giving of miracles, then, is meant to bring us to the point where we see with this vision. But what is vision? In this podcast, Robert and Emily explore the topic of vision to help you understand this central Course teaching. Ep 11Forgiveness in A Course in Miracles

Forgiveness is the Course's central teaching and yet there is a lot of confusion around this topic given that what we are often taught about forgiveness tends to be at odds with what the Course says about it. In this podcast, Robert and Emily explore the Course's conceptual approach to forgiveness and also offer a composite forgiveness exercise based on the Workbook's forgiveness teachings. S1 Ep 10Meditation in A Course in Miracles

Meditation has been a significant part of the Course's history and practice from the very beginning. This, however, can be difficult to spot since the word itself doesn't appear much in any volume. Even so, the Workbook in particular wants to train us to use meditation to obtain a state of peace and, eventually, an experience of God and our true Self. In this podcast, Robert and Emily explore meditation in a Course context. Topics covered include the role of meditation in the Course's origin, three techniques of Workbook meditation, essential characteristics of Course-based meditation, when to meditate, how long, and more. Ep 9What is God's Role in Trials and Tragedies of the World? (Part 2)

This conversation is a follow-up to A Course in Miracles Radio Episode 6 entitled "What is God's Role in the Trials and Tragedies of the World?" Based on the feedback received from that interview, there was some confusion around two seemingly conflicting ideas addressed: How can we choose everything that happens to us, and How can everything that happens be part of God's larger plan at the same time? In this podcast, Robert and Emily go deeper into this issue and much more on the topic of God's role in our lives. Ep 8What is God?

How we view God colors how we view everything. If we see an angry God, we will always be looking over our shoulder waiting for Him to catch up with us. If we see a remote, indifferent God, we will always feel cast adrift in the open ocean. But what if we only saw a loving God? In this episode of A Course in Miracles Radio, Robert Perry and Emily Bennington examine our attitudes toward God and, especially, how A Course in Miracles portrays Him.
