When Two Roads Lead To One Path With The Young Fables

Whether you believe in karma or a higher power or just good old juju coming from the universe, sometimes two roads can lead to one path in our lives. That’s exactly what happened with my husband Jeff and myself a few years back and that’s what happened with this week’s musical guests, the Young Fables. Laurel Wright and Wes Lunsford (the Young Fables) are a dynamic duo of singer-songwriters that steadily has Music City talking about their unique and honest approach to songwriting, along with their infectious live shows. Heavyweights like Sheryl Crow and Keith Urban have even become “Fable Fanatics.” Oh, and they happen to be a duo that fell in love in real-life as well. On This Podcast Episode: The Young Fables joined us from Nashville to talk about finding love and the music they were meant to play, how their Kickstarter fundraiser went over the top live on the radio and their new album, Old Songs that’s due May 4. My co-host for the podcast is my husband, Jeff Game, a travel, and music journalist that's always on the hunt for a good story to tell. Ask Shannah – How Much Should I Have Invested At Certain Ages + Should I Make Weekly Credit Card Payments

The Ask Shannah questions are piling up so today I'm tackling two questions that I feel will resonate with you. On This Podcast Episode: Question #1 - How Much Should I Have Invested (and saved) At Certain Ages - while there are some common goals that are often suggested by personal finance experts, there isn't a hard-fast number for how much you should have invested and saved. Even if you haven't started yet, now is as good of a time as any. However, in the episode, I'm going to offer some common suggestions you can use to figure out if you're on track. Question #2 - Should I Make Weekly Credit Card Payments - well, the most important factor is that you're making your credit card payment on-time, however, these micropayments have become popular with people trying to better their credit score and pay off debt faster. See what I have to say about making weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly credit card payments. Have an Ask Shannah question, submit it here. Whatever career path or life choices we take with our lives may often time require a backup plan if something does not work out how we envision. But, what if we have one vision for our lives and no matter how long it takes or how much hard work comes with that dream this is exactly the direction we are headed and nothing will stop us or get in our way? Frontman of the power pop/rock band Jukebox the Ghost Ben Thornewill, always knew music was part of his life plan, from growing up playing classical music to getting a college degree in music and now ten years on as a successful chart-topping band. Now, the Brooklyn-based trio of Thornewill on vocals/piano, Tommy Siegel guitar/vocals, and Jesse Kristin on drums/vocals have a sonically layered new album out right now, “Off to the Races.” We caught up with Thornewill in Brooklyn as Jukebox the Ghost was preparing to hit the road on their headlining tour in support of the new album. We talked with the lead singer about his path from classical music to rock music, their alter-ego of being a Queen cover band and how Brooklyn has become such a hotbed for creatives these days. Two Ways to Do Money Differently with BankMobile and Better Mortgage & Ask Shannah - My Career as a Female CFP

It’s 2018, and if you ask me, it’s time to do things better and definitely more affordable. Thanks to technology, we’re seeing a lot of our money transactions transform before our eyes. Think about how we save money with apps like Acorns, invest online with companies like Betterment, and on this podcast episode we’re talking about redefining the banking and mortgage process with two companies (BankMobile and Better Mortgage) that are using technology to do it better! On This Podcast Episode: This episode is dedicated to doing money things better. We’re introducing you to Luvleen Sidhu from BankMobile and Vishal Garg from Better Mortgage to unlock your thinking about two industries that were in dire need of some serious modernizing. Luvleen Sidhu had enough with big banking fees and wanted to do it differently. In 2013, Americans spent $32 billion on overdraft fees, which is three times as much as they spent on breast cancer and lung cancer combined and more than they spent on vegetables. Additionally, the underbanked spend approximately 10 percent of their salaries on fees for alternative financial services. Together with her father Jay Sidhu, she launched BankMobile in January 2015 to offer this banking experience all through a smartphone or tablet device, utilizing cutting-edge technology to make banking seamless. BankMobile offers completely fee-free accounts—checking, savings with a guaranteed higher savings rate than the top four banks in the U.S., and line of credit, access to over 55,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide (BankMobile VIP customers have free access to every ATM in the U.S., which is more than 400,000 ATMs), a personal banker for all customers, and a free financial coach for VIP customers. Vishal Garg is the Founder and CEO of Better Mortgage, working to make the mortgage process simpler, faster and much much better for all Americans – especially the new generation of first-time homebuyers (aka millennials). Better is a digital mortgage company focused on improving access to home financing. They’re using tech to make home buying better by speeding up the process, bringing down the cost and ensuring our customers get the best possible mortgage. Their mission is to make home buying more affordable and accessible for everyone. And that’s built into Better’s DNA - from their zero commissions approach to their 100% transparent process. History Of The Country Music Hall of Fame and Ask Shannah - Student Loan Consolidation

Recently we went to see one of our favorite Irish singers, Glen Hansard and he was telling about his first visit to Los Angeles. He had a quote about how to really get to know a place or culture, “If you want to learn about a place, read the history books. If you want to get to know a place, listen to their songs.” This is so true and we love exploring so many genres of music. These days it seems like we’re all reading more about history, watching documentaries about historic events and of course listening to podcasts about the history of so many things, people and places. On This Podcast Episode: This episode's Ask Shannah question is from Allison who is curious about student loan consolidation and whether it makes sense or not. Thanks Allison for the question! This week we wanted to explore the history of country music because just like your own money journey through life, history tells us a lot about where we've been and where we're going. For that reason, we also want to celebrate some of today’s hottest country artists and the incredible success they've had through their careers. Take a tour with us through one of Nashville’s most popular attractions, the Country Music Hall of Fame. We talked with museum editor Michael Gray about their newly opened exhibit, American Current, which features such greats as Taylor Swift, Jason Aldeen, Sam Hunt, Miranda Lambert, Jason Isbell, a new judge on American Idol Luke Bryan and so many more. My co-host for the podcast is my husband, Jeff Game, a travel, and music journalist that's always on the hunt for a good story to tell. 3 Innovative Ways to Afford Your Down Payment With Loftium, Landed and Unison & Ask Shannah - Grow Your Down Payment Savings

Saving up potentially a lot of money for the down payment to buy your home can seem like a very daunting process. I know when I bought my first home it felt like I was scraping money together in every direction just to find enough to "make it work." Unfortunately, in many cities, the cost of entry for buying your first home has only become more and more expensive - hello San Francisco, New York, LA and even places like Chicago. The good news is the three companies we're talking to today are in the business of reinventing how you can actually afford that hefty down payment. On This Podcast Episode: Ask Shannah: Our question comes from Caitlin today who is trying to find ways to supercharge their savings to buy their first home in a really expensive market. Although there aren't any secret tricks, when you're trying to save for a big purchase you must know your numbers - where every penny is going and why to try to find excess savings. Take a listen as I offer some other tips for Caitlin and her husband. If you're looking for innovative ways to save for your down payment, this podcast is for you. I'm talking to three companies about what they offer millennials so you can put what savings you do have, with a little assistance, into your dream home sooner rather than later. Loftium - they're using one innovative company, Airbnb, to help you afford your 20% down payment. Landed- calling anyone who works for a school, this company is for you. They offer an innovative down payment program for teachers who don't often have the means to save 20% down on their own. Unison- think Landed but for anyone in any career. Unison is changing the way you afford your down payment so you can start living in your dream home and not just dreaming about it. Bands like Beyond the Sun are thinking outside the big box of country music and are carving their own path. On This Podcast Episode: We caught up with Beyond the Sun in Nashville as they chatted about their new song, “Dance Floor” and the music they’ll be releasing later in 2018, how their version of country music today fits with today’s fans and how they declare Bruce Springsteen’s songwriting as the GOAT (greatest of all time). You'll hear some great tunes and have a chance to check out a new band. Breaking Down Investing Taboos with Taylor Schulte & Ask Shannah – What Do I Need to Know About Life Insurance

There are a lot of taboos when it comes to investing. I must be rich to start investing, or I’ll lose all my money if I start investing, or I don’t have a clue where to start investing…so I’ll be fine if I never do. Those may seem silly, but we all have our own taboos when it comes to investing – the good and not-so-good ones. So, let’s dig in and see if we can’t demystify some of those common taboos and help you find your own sweet spot when it comes to investing. On This Podcast Episode: Taylor R. Schulte, Founder of Define Financial, podcast host of Stay Wealthy San Diego and a fellow CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ is joining me in this episode to talk about– no, completely and utterly demystify- the five most common investing taboos: Taboo 1 - I can’t invest in the stock market if I have other debt (student loan, credit card, etc.) Taboo 2 - I must invest too much of my salary each month to make a difference - so why invest Taboo 3 - The market is at all-time highs. I'm going to wait to invest until there is a market correction and I can buy at a lower price because I don’t want to lose my money Taboo 4 - I must be an investing expert to put together a solid portfolio that works for my risk tolerance (strike up a discussion about what someone should be looking at when they are evaluating mutual funds or stocks for their portfolio) Taboo 5- I can just invest in cryptocurrency and don’t have to invest in anything else Shout Out to Our Episode Sponsor: It’s your turn to start investing. How to Be Your True Self and Stay Noisy with the Satellite Sisters and Ask Shannah – Am I Saving Enough

Money thing is about so much more than what’s in your paycheck every week," says the brilliant Liz Dolan, who together with her sisters Lian and Julie Dolan host the popular Satellite Sisters podcast each week. This episode is jam-packed with serious and silly advice and wisdom for how you can find your true self in a crowded space, and as they say, #staynoisy in all areas of your life. On This Podcast Episode: I had a chance to sit down with the Satellite Sisters recently and dive deep into this topic of finding your true self and understand how we can all stay noisy. Both Liz and Lian have backgrounds that will blow your mind. Liz is the former Chief Marketing Officer for 20th Century Fox, Nike and OWN to name a few, while Lian is a best-selling author. We talked about their award-winning podcast, and how they made the leap from successful radio show to podcast before podcasting was even a "thing." Ask Shannah - We tackled a question from Praveen who was trying to figure out how much to contribute to her 401(k) at work and if she should change her contribution from 3% to 5%. Talking So Money with Farnoosh Torabi & Ask Shannah – What Are My Best Steps Moving Forward

Today on Millennial Money we're doing a podcast swap with one of my favorite podcasters, Farnoosh Torabi. You may know her from her podcast, So Money where she shares stories of personal finance, entrepreneurship, financial success and money strategy. She's got everyone from celebrities to everyday people on her show and each episode packs a serious punch of inspiration and education. On This Podcast Episode: Farnoosh is dishing some of her own stories of financial success and struggle as she's made her way from journalist to acclaimed author to podcast host...and so much more. This was a super fun episode as I got to go behind the scenes with Farnoosh as she talked about her career journey, managing money in a relationship (this isn't easy for anyone) and what keeps her inspired and focused on always creating great content on So Money. Today, we're doing a podcast swap too. You can check out my interview with Farnoosh on So Money after you've listened to this episode. Ask Shannah- This question is from Joe and it's all about the steps you should take after you've got your money spread out - retirement, college fund, credit cards and more. While there's never one answer to that question, it always comes back to your goals and the life you want to live. Matching your money as best you can to those goals will ensure you're headed in the right direction. Music Chat With Mat Kearney and Ask Shannah - I Don't Have a 401K at Work

We all have talents - some may be already tapped talents and some may yet to be extracted from inside of us. What if you never discover the talents you have inside of you and never chase your dreams? Singer/songwriter Mat Kearney did not discover his amazing musical talents until he was midway through college at Chico State in California. Now, this Oregon-born singer-songwriter continues to break down musical barriers with his soulful genre-bending blend of hip-hop infused style of music with his new self-titled EP and upcoming album. On This Podcast Episode: Mat Kearney stopped by the Millennial Money podcast as was in the middle recent rehearsals in Nashville for his upcoming national tour to chat with Jeff. We loved hanging out with one of the all-around great guys in music today, as we chatted about his upcoming CRAZYTALK album and current tour, stories of opening for John Mayer early in his career and how fatherhood has changed his songwriting. Also, today's Ask Shannah question is all about not having access to a 401(k) at work from Angela. Unplugging In The Texas Hill Country River Region + Ask Shannah

Unplugging is not something we do well in our warp-speed these days - but we should. In fact, there are scientific studies that suggest that being able to truly relax and rest has been shown to boost productivity, increase creativity, and reduce the long-term risks of potentially fatal ailments. So we decided to do just that - unplug a bit, reconnect, increase our creativity, and visit a place that many haven't even heard of - Texas Hill Country River Region. On This Podcast Episode: Sometimes we all need to escape the hustle and bustle of our daily lives to find a place where the pace is not so frantic, the locals are a lot friendlier, and the beauty of nature envelopes your soul with a warm Earth Day-esque hug. My co-host, Jeff Game, discuss how unplugging vacations can be one of the best investments you can make (not only as a couple but also in helping us get back in touch with what matters most in life). We recently decided to leave our city slicker lives behind for a few days, unplug and explore the quintessential Americana Texas Hill Country River Region, located in Uvalde County. And, it kind of ruled! As we hopped in our rental car for the hour and a half drive from San Antonio to Texas Hill Country River Region, cranked up our Willie Nelson playlist and could already feel the stress fall away along the roadside. Are You A Fool For Paying Your Credit Card In Full

This episode was inspired by a listener question sent in by Dezmond. He and his father had a bit of a disagreement over whether you should pay your credit card off in full each month or leave a balance to build a strong credit score. The Valentine's Day Escape Plan

We all know that Valentine’s Day is a made up, Hallmark holiday that forces us to spend more money than we intended or should spend. It’s also a holiday that says this one day a year you have to be in love, and of course, spend more money. So not true! On This Podcast Episode: Valentine’s Day is the third largest consumer holiday of the year, as we spend over $19 Billion in the name of Cupid. The average person will spend $143.56 for their Valentine. Instead of spending money on stuff you or your Valentine may or may not use (probably not), spend your hard-earned cash on an escape plan and getaway for love. This is a great plan whether you’re in love or not. Travel this Valentine’s Day! How You Earn, Save, And Spend Your Money - Alanna Okun

What does how you earn, save and spend your money say about your overall relationship with money - a lot actually. Some of us spend more money to "look the part" in our careers and some of us can get away with comfy pants and ripped sweatshirts (although I urge you to never go to work this way). What writer Alanna Okun has found in her series, How Do You Shop on Racked is that our uniqueness to spending and saving money is also the tie that binds us all together. On This Podcast Episode: We're getting down and dirty with Racked's writer and editor, Alanna Okun, about the series How Do You Shop in this episode. Alanna shares some of the most surprising discoveries she's learned from talking to many different women from across the U.S. about their own saving and spending money stories. Alanna's also got quite a money story herself. When Your Home Is Bigger Than Your Bank Account

When we think about the "American Dream" buying a home is certainly a core element. At least that's what I've been told. However, far too often I find people getting tempted into buying a home that's way too big for their bank account because society says, "you should buy a house you can grow into." Securing and Protecting Your Finances In The Cashless Society - Joe Daly

Let's talk about a "tough" money subject – security and fraud prevention. It's on everyone's mind, even though our cashless society is pretty convenient for us all. The payments innovation landscape is rapidly broadening to encompass innovation ranging from mobile payments to biometrics (as exhibited by Apple’s recent announcement) and even voice-activated payments – but the question remains, can you trust these new technologies for payments? On This Podcast Episode: I'm going straight to the expert, Joe Daly (COO, Paysafe Payments Processing, North America), to find out how you can stay save in this cashless society. On this episode we're talking about topics that we're all trying to figure out including: Cashless Future – Millennials are the driving force behind a cashless society, but you expect high-performance and security from your alternative payment options before you completely abandon traditional payment methods. How can you balance that? Convenience Above All – In 2018, millennials will drive digital wallet adoption due to this generation’s preference for convenient payment methods. How do you stay safe? Alternative Payment Technologies – Although Paysafe research found 31% of 18 – 34 year-olds already use cryptocurrencies from time to time, Millennials will not be a driving force behind standardizing cryptocurrency as a mainstream payment. One of the top money resolutions in 2018 is to get rid of that debt that keeps you locked up from achieving so many of your goals – and in particular that massive student loan debt. I’ve heard it from many of the listeners over the month of December that nothing would make you happier than to roll out of 2018 with a lot less – if not zero - student loan debt. I hear you! On This Podcast Episode: If we’re going to be more empowered in 2018 then we’ve got to make up our minds to do just that. Sure, you're still going to get stressed out and worried about your student loans, or any debt, but maybe if we all encourage each other…we can create a movement of us all breaking up with our student loan debt this year. The good news is that you don’t need a lot of fancy techniques to break up with your student loans – just the commitment to approach those loans with a little strategy. Did you know you could make extra payments to your student loan What about making lump sum payments with your annual bonus Do you have your student loan on auto debit - you'll save a ton if you do Considering refinancing? Think about SoFi to help lower your interest rate Knowing your numbers is key to finding savings in your bank account to make extra payments Most important, create a plan and find motivation to keep working that plan Thanks for Tuning In: “Hey Listeners!
