Notes:
- Pepeha might be defined as a tribal motto or saying
- Pepeha references waka, landmarks, and ancestors we belong to
- It is an expression of whakapapa
- We introduce ourselves by saying who our people are and where we belong
- The focus is on the collective rather than the individual
- When we recite pepeha we establish connections with others
Examples:
- Ko Taupō te moana, Ko Tongariro te maunga, ko Te Heuheu te tangata
- Ko Waikato te awa, he piko he tanwha, he piko he taniwha
- Ehara a Hikurangi i te maunga nekeneke
- Ko…te waka, ko…te maunga, ko…awa, ko…te iwi, ko...te hapū, ko...te marae
- We discuss pepeha for Māori and non-Māori
