Show Notes

In this episode, we explore pepeha.

Notes:

  • Pepeha might be defined as a tribal motto or saying
  • Pepeha references waka, landmarks, and ancestors we belong to
  • It is an expression of whakapapa
  • We introduce ourselves by saying who our people are and where we belong
  • The focus is on the collective rather than the individual
  • When we recite pepeha we establish connections with others

Examples:

  • Ko Taupō te moana, Ko Tongariro te maunga, ko Te Heuheu te tangata
  • Ko Waikato te awa, he piko he tanwha, he piko he taniwha
  • Ehara a Hikurangi i te maunga nekeneke
  • Ko…te waka, ko…te maunga, ko…awa, ko…te iwi, ko...te hapū, ko...te marae
  • We discuss pepeha for Māori and non-Māori
