NEWS OF THE DAY - 6th April 2022.
NEWS OF THE DAY - 6th April 2022. The Prime Minister says he won't be calling an election tomorrow - but has hinted we're likely to go to the polls on the 21st of May. The date means the Morrison Government would have served its full-term. Just over two weeks since being sworn in as premier, Peter Malinauskas has jetted off to Canberra to address the National Press Club vowing to fight for South Australia. Taylor Walker will make his AFL return this weekend, free from a six-match suspension that nearly cost him his career. Close to six thousand more Covid cases have been recorded in SA today - topping the previous highest figure set in January. 5 thousand 784 new cases have been recorded, and another two people have died - a woman in her 90s and a man in his 80s. Hospital rates remain stable at 208 - with 12 people in ICU - one on a ventilator. While one of the state's biggest public schools - Brighton High - will shut tomorrow due to Covid. Staff shortages have forced the school to revert to remote learning for three days; Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier says the best protection is to be fully vaccinated - with around 30 per cent of people yet to get their booster. AFL-W footballer and nurse Deni Varnhagen's legal challenge against SA's vaccine mandate is finally underway. It's been postponed several times because lawyers or the judge were in Covid isolation. Police Commissioner Grant Stevens wasn't at court because he has a virus. Outside Court Ms Varnhagen's lawyer Loretta Polson says that's disappointing. The U-S and Ukraine have used the world stage to demand Russia's suspension from the U-N Human Rights Council. They argue Moscow's inclusion goes against its core values of promoting peace and justice. It's being accused of committing war crimes in Ukraine. New details have emerged over an accident at Movie World, that left a 12 year old boy with a serious head injury. There are reports he may not have been seated properly when he fell from a carousel. It left him with a deep wound to the back of his head. More news as it happens on FIVEaa. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
