The furore that followed the recent cases of statutory rape is still raging on in the press.
The recent cases involving a bowler Noor Afizal, an electrician Chuah Guan Jiu and most recently a kindergarten co-owner Ewe Peng Lip have put the question of what rape and consent means into the public consciousness.
While each of the case has its own facts and circumstances, they all involve sex with minors, and that brings up two facts that are disturbing to many Malaysians:
- that teenagers are having sex at a very young age, consentual or otherwise
- that there are adults who prey on minors for sexual gratification.
These are not new issues but the recent cases seem to have caught everyone by surprise.
