The Malayan Teachers' Training College was established at Kirkby College, Liverpool, back in the early 1950s as Malaya emerged from the Second World War with a shortage of trained teachers. Candidates from Malaya were flown to Britain to attend the college. Throughout its active years from 1952 to 1962, the college produced 1,500 teachers and over 400 teacher-trainers. The alumni are fondly known as Kirkby-ites, and have, after their days at Kirkby, progressed to become experts in a variety of fields. We speak with two alumni, Dato' VL Kandan and Tan Ling Suan, about their experiences and life lessons from Kirkby.
