Plaut este considerat a fi primul autor latin de comedii. De fapt, opera sa reprezintă cel mai important corpus vechi, latin, și s-au păstrat 20 de comedii. Numele Plaut este o poreclă și înseamnă „picior plat”, ceea ce ne relevă că pe lângă meseria de scriitor, era și un actor.
