S3 Ep 181News: WeWork, Uber & the moment of reckoning in venture capital
WeWork has been front of mind over the past few weeks. The office space leasing company funded by Softbank's Vision Fund had expected a $47 billion value at IPO. Instead, the company had to pull its IPO as its expected value dropped to below $20 billion. Days later, the company dismissed the co-founder and CEO Adam Neumann. After pulling the IPO, questions have now arisen about WeWork's ability to stay solvent. Some estimates suggest WeWork may run out of cash within the year (for context: in 2018, WeWork lost $1.8 billion or $200k every hour). In this episode of Equity Mates, we make the case that WeWork is just the tip of a VC-fuelled, over-inflated iceberg. In fact, over the last few years a number of unprofitable unicorns (a unicorn is a private tech company valued at $1 billion or more) have gone public. It seems that public market investors are not as tolerant of companies that lose money, and this has been reflected in their share price. To give you an sense of what we're discussing, below is a list of a few companies mentioned in this episode and their share price movement since IPO (price as of recording date): • WeWork pulled IPO • Uber down 29% • Lyft down 50% • Slack down 33% • Spotify down 21% • Snapchat down 46% • Dropbox down 31% • Peloton down 19% In this episode you will learn: • How WeWork is just the tip of the iceberg of tech unicorns now struggling in public markets • What led to these inflated valuations in the first place • How the iPhone's release in 2007 sparked a decade-long, venture capital boom • What recent VC megadeals, including deals by Softbank, have meant for these companies • Why now is the time that this VC bubble is ending • How public market investors should think about these events Remember, our live show are coming up fast. S3 Ep 180Classic Ep: Jesse Felder - Clear Thinking On What's Happening In Markets
A while ago (and in response to our most common critique) we at Equity Mates made a commitment - to improve the quality of our audio. Unfortunately, Ren is moving house at the moment and with a poor internet connection comes patchy audio. So in the spirit of upholding our commitment, and improving our audio quality, we chose not to release that episode. Instead, we're re-releasing one of our favourites. An interview with someone who has been managing money for over twenty years, who founded his own hedge fund and now provides some of the clearest and most insightful market commentary going around. We hope you enjoy this interview with Jesse Felder. Original show notes below: We are so excited to bring you another episode in our Expert Investor series. Our guest this week is someone who we have been following for a couple of years now, and have longed to have on the show. His name is Jesse Felder. Jesse is an ex-Wall Street trader, starting his career at Bear Stearns (without even studying Business or Finance) - the largest investment bank on Wall Street at the time. He then went on co-found a multi-billion dollar hedge fund, before moving into financial media, and running 'The Felder Report'. Jesse's views resonate with us, and if you've listened to our episode 'The Buy-And-Hold Cult' then you will have heard Jesse speak before. In this episode you will learn: • Jesse's number one thing that beginners should understand better about markets • What Jesse's first investment was, and what lead him to that decision • The worst piece of advice he's ever received • Why all investors should be wary of recency bias • Jesse's current approach to investing, given equity valuations are at historic highs • Why Equity Mates might be wrong about the logic of index investing • Why Gold still has potential, and why it should be part of every investor's portfolio Stocks and resources discussed: • Reminiscences of a Stock Operator - Edwin Lefèvre • The Felder Report • Superinvestors And The Art Of Worldly Wisdom • Wall Street Journal Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 179Deep Dive : Pharmaceutical Industry
The Pharmaceutical industry would have to be one of the most unique and globalised industries you can invest in. Be it the patent system that protects products for up to 20 years, the vast sums of money needed for research and development or the stigma that often surrounds the industry, it certainly is a fascinating area to look for opportunities to invest. We continue with our Industry Deep Dive series and jump into pharmaceuticals. In this episode you will learn: • about the revenue and growth of the industry • about the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, and its impact on business • about the role patents play in protecting the profits of companies • what are the main industry threats • who the big players are in the industry • what the best way is to get exposure, domestically and internationally How to keep in touch with Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 176Expert Investor: Julia Lee - Mastermind #4
As always, we are excited about this episode, as we get the chance to sit down with Julia Lee to pitch specific stocks! How does it work? Each month, Ren (Alec) & Bryce will come together with Julia Lee, to each pitch a stock we think is either interesting, be it due to its business model, its opportunity for growth or perhaps its management, or that we think presents a good investment opportunity. Please note, in no way is this a buy, hold, or sell recommendation, and doing your own research on any stocks discussed is critical, this is general information and discussion only. The idea of these sessions is to expose you to the different ways in which we think about companies, and go about researching them, and to obviously learn from Julia, who has a ton of experience. S3 Ep 172News: Earnings Season Around the World
There is a big, wide world of opportunity out there, and one of the biggest mistakes investors can make is to not explore it. This mistake, when an investor only invests in their home market, is known as 'home country bias'. Think about it this way - Australia is 2% of the total value of the global share market. So if you only invest in Australia, you're missing out on the other 98% of the possible investing universe. Even the US - the largest share market in the world - is less than half of the global share market. So to explore the world of investing, today's episode is taking a look at earnings season around the world. We often speak about the Australian market and American market on this show - so we're avoiding these two countries. Instead we're heading to Europe, Asia and South America to take a look at what caught our eye in earnings season around the world. In this episode you will learn: • England: About one of the world's largest alcohol brands you may never have heard of • Europe: What negative interest rates have meant for European banks • Germany: How Volkswagen have rebounded since their emissions scandal in 2015 • Hong Kong: What the US-China trade war and recent government protests have meant for Hong Kong listed companies • Brazil: How one of the world's largest paper companies is performing • Argentina: How Latin America's version of Amazon.com is managing Argentina's currency crisis How to keep in touch with Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 171Expert Investor: Jonny Wilkinson, Equitise - Crowdfunding Innovative & Early-Stage Companies
We love investing in companies at Equity Mates, and normally this is done through the public markets and stock exchanges. However, there is a whole other world of private markets that retail investors, like us, rarely get access to. It's in these markets, for example, that you get to invest in innovative, early-stage companies before they potentially exit with IPO. The good news is that there are businesses set up to make the private markets accessible to the retail investor. One of the businesses is Equitise. In this episode, we chat with the Co-founder and Director of Equitise, Jonny Wilkinson. Equitise is an equity crowdfunding platform, allowing Australian and New Zealanders to invest in early-stage companies in return for equity. It has the potential to be an exciting addition to your investment portfolio! In this episode you will learn: • Who Equitise are and what equity crowdfunding is • Why a business would choose to crowdfund over VC, or debt • Pro's and con's of crowdfunding • How to buy into a company through Equitise • Some of the major success stories that have used Equitise to raise money • About the current state of the Australian VC market • Plus much more! S3 Ep 1Basics: Cash Flow & Profit | What's More Important For A Business?
Cash flow and profit - both are important elements of a healthy, growing business. But don't get them confused as being the same thing. One of the biggest reasons that many businesses and entrepreneurs go out of business, is because they don't manage their cash flow. Just because a business is profitable, doesn't mean it's got sufficient cash flow to sustain itself. Understanding the difference between the two, and what it means for the business you want to invest it, is important. In this episode, you will learn • The definition of cash flow • The definition of profit • What is means for a business to be cash-flow positive and cash-flow negative • If a business can be profitable but have negative cash-flow • Which of the two are more important How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 168News: Argentina's Market Plummets 48%. Why? | Emerging Markets
On August 12th, 2019, Argentina's S&P Merval Index (the most important index of the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange), plummeted 48% - the second-largest single-day drop of any stock market since 1950. The Argentine peso also fell 15%. So the question is, why? Investors were spooked by the result of a primary election, and with the economy already struggling, and debt mounting, it increased fears for the possibility of Argentina defaulting on its debt, again. In this episode, we look at the context surrounding the stock market drop and use it as an opportunity to explore the advantages and risks associated with emerging markets. In this episode you will learn: • why Argentina's stock market plummeted 48% • what sovereign debt is • what measures Argentina's central bank took to stem the drop in their currency • the five worst stock market drops since 1950 • the key risks to consider when investing in emerging markets • some of the advantages of investing in emerging markets • the easiest way to get exposure to emerging markets How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 167Expert Investors: Julia Lee - Mastermind #3
Mastermind has quickly become one of the most popular mini-series of Equity Mates. And for good reason. We love sitting down with Julia Lee to pitch a stock or trade idea to each. It's with great excitement that we bring you the 3rd episode in the series! S3 Ep 166News: 10 Companies We've Noticed This Earnings Season
Earnings season - that time of the year when public companies report their half year or full year financial results. We're about halfway through the season at the moment and we've seen some very noteworthy reports so far. The most important thing to keep in mind when companies report - don't get too caught up in the expectations game. Analysts will have expectations and the share price will move based on how the company performs relative to these expectations. At Equity Mates what we focus on is asking ' does the company's recent report confirm my investment thesis?'. If your investment thesis still holds, then missing an analyst's expected number this reporting season isn't going to make a difference in the long-term. So in this episode we talk about 10 companies that caught our attention and unpack what their recent reports tell us about their businesses moving forward. In this episode we discuss: • Baby Bunting (ASX: BBN) • News Corp (ASX: NWS) • Breville Group (ASX: BRG) • oOh!Media (ASX: OML) • CSL Limited (ASX: CSL) • JB Hi-Fi (ASX: JBH) • Ansell (ASX: ANN) • ASX (ASX: ASX) • Invocare (ASX: IVC) • Walt Disney Co (NYSE: DIS) How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 165Basics: Exchange Rates - Money Makes the World Go Round - Here's How
The Australian stock market makes up approx. 3% of the global stock market. Even the US stock market is just over 50% of the global stock market. As such, its important to avoid 'home country bias' and expand your investing universe to take advantage of opportunity around the world. Especially today with technology making it easier than ever before to access global markets. The first thing every investor must do when investing overseas is exchange their money into a foreign currency. With 180 currencies around the world, its important to understand what changing money into different currencies means for your overall returns. In this episode we unpack this process and explain what you need to understand about exchange rates. S3 Ep 164EM Chat: What we've been watching in markets - Short sellers, Gold & Bitcoin
There's been plenty happening in markets recently, and even with 2 episodes a week we haven't had a chance to discuss it all. So in this episode we catch up on a few topics we've had our eye on. This includes changes in our personal investing journeys, new products for investors we're trying and big changes in the world of finance. In this episode we discuss: • The recent performance of the price of gold • The difference between paper gold and physical gold • Why gold is a counter-cyclical asset, and why that is important • CommBank's new micro-investing app Pocket (https://www.commsec.com.au/pocket) • Bitcoin's revival • A few thoughts on Finance Twitter • A brokerage platform Bryce is trialling with an interesting new feature • Rural Funds Group's (ASX: RFF) busy week on the back of a report from an American short seller(As well as a brief commiseration about our footy teams) How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 163Basics: Central Banks & Interest Rates
Unless you've been in a submarine, blocked off from worldly communication, it would be pretty fair to assume you've heard a lot about central banks and interest rates in the media. Particularly over the past couple of years. We're going through a period that is arguably quite unprecedented, and the role of the central bank is coming into question - do they have the influence they once had? In this episode, we break down central banks and interest rates, to help you piece the economy together. We answer the following questions: • What are central banks? • Why are we talking about them now? • What are the goals of a central bank? • What is their role in the economy? • How do they achieve their goals? • What are interest rates? What is QE (quantitative easing)? • Which country has the lowest interest rate and which has the highest? Knowing the role of central banks and interest rates will go a long way to helping you form a solid base understanding of the economy. S3 Ep 162Expert Investor: Adam Verwey - Is sugar an ethical investment?
The first thing you need to understand about ethical investing - it's a myth that you're sacrificing returns for morality. In fact, over the last 12 months (so including 2018's horrific end of the year) the ASX200 is up 8% and the S&P500 is up 3%. In comparison, Betashare's Global Ethical ETF (ASX: ETHI) is up 12% and their Australian Ethical ETF (ASX: FAIR) is up 15%. So it seems that good morals make for good returns. To unpack the world of ethical investing, we sat down with one of the pioneers of this form of investing in Australia - Adam Verwey. Adam co-founded Future Super, the ethical super fund, in 2014 and has helped in grow into a large fund with $900m in assets under management. In this episode we unpack Adam's journey and the growth of future super, and discuss some of the key considerations that go into ethical investing. If you've ever wondered if sugar is ethical, or been unsure about the ethics of big tech - then this episode should help answer this dilemmas. S3 Ep 159Expert Investor: Jodie Hampshire - Is There Value In A Financial Advisor?
Is there value in a financial advisor? We got Jodie Hampshire on to help us find out. Jodie is Managing Director of Russell Investments, Australia - a global asset manager with $400m under management across the world. She is also a member of the firm's Australia Leadership Team and the Russell Global Council. Russell Investments has just released a new Managed Account offering, so we spend some time discussing how they differ from your traditional managed account. However, the main reason for getting Jodie on, was to discuss their Value Of An Advisor Report. The report looks holistically at the real value advisers deliver for their clients-from the knowledge and expertise required to help clients build personalised portfolios, to the support they provide when market conditions change. Advisors aren't for everyone, but sometimes it's hard to know just what value an advisor can actually give you. It's here that we try to find out. In this episode you will learn: • Who Russell Investments are, and; • Their investing philosophy • About their new Managed Account Offering - how it's different, and what they offer • How the report defines advice, and; • The distinction between the advisors in the report and investment-only advice • About the ABC's of advisor value • How retail investors access advisors • If there a minimum asset requirement before it is worth it • The key things retail investors should be looking at when choosing a financial advisor • What the future of financial advice may look like in a more technology-driven world and the role Robo-Advice may play How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 158Expert Investor: Peter Wilmshurst - Finding Value In Global Markets
Ever wondered what the day in the life of a portfolio manager looks like? Well in this episode you will find out! We were lucky to grab some time with Peter Wilmshurst, Portfolio Manager at Templeton Global Growth Fund (ASX: TGG). Templeton Global Growth Fund is a Listed Investment Company (LIC), listing in Australia in 1987, however, they have a global approach, investing in some of the world's better-known brands. Peter has a strong focus on finding value in his investments. In other words, finding companies that are cheap. With markets currently at all-time highs, Peter gave some fascinating insight into how a value investor approaches market cycles, spreading their investments across different industries at different points in the cycle. S3 Ep 157Expert Investor: Julia Lee - Mastermind #2
Mastermind is fast becoming our favourite episode of the month. The feedback from Mastermind #1 has been incredible which is why we're so excited to continue with the format and bring you Mastermind #2. We're hoping to get Julia's thoughts on our approaches. S3 Ep 156Expert Investor: Chris Reining - How To Save And Invest Your Way To Retirement
We all dream of retiring early, don't we? One of our broader goals for investing, at Equity Mates, is to use stocks as a way of removing the need to rely on a pay cheque later in life. However, developing a substantial investment portfolio, that generates enough income for you to retire, can appear quite daunting, and maybe unachievable. Particularly if you have a mortgage, dependencies, or an inconsistent income stream. The good news is, however, there are steps and some simple investing principles you can follow to get yourself on track to building that investment portfolio. This episode we chat with Chris Reining who has done exactly what we aspire to do - he saved, invested and then retired by the age of 37. Yes, 37! Chris now spends time doing what he loves, and not working in the corporate world. In this episode you will learn: • What Chris studied at university • How Chris used his entrepreneurial flair and started a few businesses • About the pivotal moment in which Chris decided to say farewell to corporate life and start building towards financial independence • About Chris' saving strategy, and how he went from saving 10% of income to over 50% of his income • What the investing strategy was - what Chris invested in, how often he was investing, what his investing principles were • What some of the most important characteristics are that you need if you're to embark on this journey • How you should think about superannuation as a millennial How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 155Basics: Key Metrics for Different Investing Styles
One of the most common questions we get asked is "what metrics should I be looking at?" Our unhelpful answer back is often "it depends..." Different investing styles lend themselves to different investing metrics. So in this episode we focus on three major styles of investing - Value, Growth and Momentum - and talk about some key metrics for each style. Keep in mind these lists are not exhaustive and distinctions are not clear. These metrics can be useful for all types of investors to try and build a complete picture of a company's situation, market price and future prospects. In this episode you will learn: • Value investing - Price to Earnings & Price to Book • Growth investing - Earnings Growth, Revenue Growth & Return on Equity • Momentum investing - Rate of Change, Moving Average amongst others How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 154Expert Investor: Henry Jennings - How Small-Caps Can Give Big Returns
You may have heard of micro-cap, small-cap, mid-cap, large-cap, and mega-cap before. No, it doesn't refer to sizes of cappuccinos! It refers to the market capitalisation of companies. Many investors choose to specialise in investing in companies of a particular market capitalisation, because companies can have different attributes depending on where they are in their growth cycle. Generally speaking, a micro-cap company would be very early on in its growth cycle, compared to a mega-cap. We've had a lot of interest from listeners wanting to know more about small-cap stocks, so that's why this episode we sit down with Henry Jennings. Henry has spent a lifetime in stockbroking and investment banking. Originally from the UK, Henry has been a divisional director for Macquarie Bank responsible for equity trading and has been both a trader and a broker during his career. Currently, Henry is a Senior Investment Analyst and Portfolio Manager at Marcus Today. Henry specialises in small and mid-caps although he has a thorough knowledge and understanding of large caps too. As millennial investors, we have time on our side, and small/mid-cap stocks offer us great capital growth potential. This is a good conversation about how millennials can harness the power of time, and incorporate small- and mid-cap stocks into our investing strategy. In this episode you will learn: • The definition of small cap stocks • The major differences between small and large caps • How you can get exposure to small-cap investing • What to look for in a small cap • About the power of a narrative • What is on Henry's watchlist at the moment • Henry's thoughts on some of our listener's small-cap picks Stocks and resources discussed: • Marcus Today • Afterpay (ASX: APT) • Tinybeans Group Ltd (ASX: TNY) • Raiz Invest Limited (ASX: RZI) • Hylea Metals Limited (ASX: HCO) How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 153Expert Investor: Mark Bernberg - The Biggest Investing Opportunity Since The Creation Of The Internet
The Cannabis industry has been on our radar for a while now, but it's still so early on in its growth (pun intended). There's a lot to learn about the industry, and we believe it's important to start understanding it now, as the investing opportunities are potentially immense. That's why we sat down with founder and CIO of the Green Fund, Mark Bernberg. The Green Fund is a global research house, covering the global cannabis industry with a specific focus on the APAC region. Mark also runs a fund, specifically investing in cannabis, for sophisticated investors. He has a deep knowledge of the industry and provides us with some fascinating insight into the future growth trajectory of the cannabis industry. In this episode you will learn: • What sparked Mark's interest in medical marijuana • Some of the key stats about the industry: value, projected growth and some of the big players • Why you should back out of investing in the supply side • The environment in Australia, and the role we'll play as the industry grows • Where investor's money is flowing at the moment • How you can get exposure to the industry as a beginner investor • Why the retail and pharama spaces are the one sto watch for future investing opportunities Stocks and resources discussed: • The Green Fund - Mark's research house • Mark's Paper Portfolio • Canopy Growth • Aurora Cannabis • Tilray • Cronos • CannTrust • ETF - Horizons HMMJ - Largest in the world How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 152EM Chat: Tracking our 2019 Bold Predictions
New Financial Year seems like a good time to review the predictions we made at the start of the year (also Bryce's book still hasn't arrived for our monthly bookclub - thanks Amazon - so we've had to delay that). So enjoy listening as we review some of our predictions from 6 months ago. There are some that we can make a call on (i.e. Alec's prediction for the 2019 Federal Election) and a lot that we're tracking as we enter the second half of the year. Topics include: • Overall market performance • Investment style - will value outperform growth? • A number of company specific predictions - Disney, Afterpay, Uber, Lyft & WeWork • We've also included a call on cryptocurrency (given its recent run) How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 150Basics: Investing Clean & Green | Ethical, Socially Responsible & Sustainable Investing
Ethical investing is becoming increasingly popular, and it's also delivering some great returns. Due to popular demand, we've dedicated this episode to explore ethical, socially responsible and sustainable investing. According to the Responsible Investment Association Australasia, "responsible investment is a process that takes into account environmental, social, governance (ESG) and ethical issues into the investment process of research, analysis, selection and monitoring of investments." As it's an area of investing that is growing, both in assets under management, and in terms of products becoming available to retail investors, there is a lot to consider for us investors. In this episode you will learn: • What ethical investing is • Whats socially responsible investing is • What sustainable investing is • What the Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA) is and what it means for investors • The growth of ethical investing • Ethical investment options for retail investors • Norway's new approach to ethical investing How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 149Expert Investor: Julia Lee - Mastermind #1
Wow, this episode is a cracker! Julia Lee is an Australian Equities Analyst at Bell Direct, and loves talking about stocks. We're so excited to have her back on the show. The last time we spoke with Julia, it was such a success we had to get her back on. So this is the first episode of our Equity Mates Mastermind sessions. How does it work? Each month, Ren (Alec) & Bryce will come together with Julia, and each pitch a stock we think is either interesting, be it due to its business model, its opportunity for growth or perhaps its management, or that we think presents a good investment opportunity. Please note, in no way is this a buy, hold, or sell recommendation, and doing your own research on any stocks discussed is critical, this is general information and discussion only. S3 Ep 148EM Chat: Inside The Mind Of A Beginner Investor | Mates of Equity Mates
This episode is a cracker - a must-not-miss! One of the original reasons we started Equity Mates was to track the journey of other beginners, as we all learnt to invest together. We believe there is a huge amount of value in learning from other beginners because we all face the same challenges. While it's still very important to get insight and ideas from the experts, sometimes it's refreshing to hear the experience of someone on your level. In this episode, we start our Mates of Equity Mates series and sit down to talk with Kip. Kip is in his late 20's, working full-time, and has made a couple of small purchases to start his investing journey. We wanted to pick his brains, answer some of his questions, and get an insight into his approach over the next 12 months, as he plans to become more active. In this episode you will learn: • How Kip decided what stocks to buy • Kip's investing strategy and approach over the next 12 months • How Kip saves to invest • Why Uber might be an investment decision • His thoughts on superannuation, and how to treat it as a millennial If you want to be part of our series, then reach out to us. S3 Ep 147Expert Investor: Meet The Investor: Paul Moore | Back Your Conviction
We don't need to look very far to find some very successful and talented investors in our very own backyard. Many episodes ago we introduced Meet The Investor, with Kerr Neilson - the beginning of a series of episodes introducing you to an Australian investor you may not have heard of. After a hiatus, we're returning to this format to bring you the second episode of Meet The Investor. We've chosen Paul Moore. Who is Paul Moore: Paul Moore is the founder and Chief Investment Officer of PM Capital. He developed the strategies and philosophy that guide the investing principles at PM Capital, and have underpinned the fund's consistently good performance, compared to indices, since it began in 1998. Paul started out in 1985 as an equities analyst, and then went on to be a fund manager at BT, looking after the Select Markets American Growth fund. Between 1994 and 1998 Paul was in charge of two of Australia's best performing global equities funds, and his group was awarded International Equities Manager of the Year in 1995 and 1996. Paul is a value investor. One of the biggest lessons from Paul, as you will hear in this episode, is to back your instinct, and to try and uncover assets that are mispriced. In this episode, we play a number of audio clips from various interviews with Paul, to help give you an insight into how he thinks an investor. S3 Ep 146EM Chat: Free Money! Now that we have your Interest... Rates
The RBA made history last week. For the first time in nearly three years they moved interest rates. Notably, the moved interests rates down, cutting the cash rate to historic lows - just 1.25%. For context, at the depth of the Global Financial Crisis - rates were 3%. In this episode we go back to basics and explain what the importance of the RBA's cash rate, and what the implications are across the economy. By the end of this episode you'll be marking the first Tuesday of every month into your calendar. S3 Ep 145Expert Investor: Ted Richards | The Dunning-Kruger Effect
It wasn't enough for Alec to speak with his AFL hero the first time, so we decided to get him back on the show for another guest interview. This episode we chat with Ted Richards - a premiership player with the Sydney Swans, and now Director of Business Development at automated investment firm Six Park. Ted has recently returned form some time abroad, where he studied behavioural finance at Harvard. We spend time unpacking some of his learnings. Understanding and recognising mental bias as an investor is very important, and can help you to avoid silly emotional-driven mistakes. The Dunning-Kruger effect is an example of a cognitive bias. Simply it's a tendency for unskilled individuals to overestimate their own ability and the tendency for experts to underestimate their own ability. This applies to all investors! Ted is a strong believer of taking the emotion out of investing and applying a rules-based approach, to try and reduce the impact of cognitive bias. It's always good to refresh your memory on these topics. We hope you enjoy! First episode of the month means one thing - Equity Mates Book Club. Last month we read Sam Walton's book Made in America. By telling the story of one of the greatest ever American business people, Made in America tells the story of Walmart. Starting in 1962 with a handful of stores it charts the journey to the giant of global retail that it is today. In this episode we unpack some of our actionable insights from the book, and explain how the lessons learnt from this one company can be applied across the investing landscape. Hosted on Acast. S3 Ep 143Your Questions: Ask Us Anything - May
As always, the last episode of the month is devoted to answering as many of the questions that have come through from listeners as we possibly can. From Instagram, and Facebook, to our 'Ask Us Anything' forum, and old fashioned letters, the questions have been flying in this month. As always, ETFs were a hot topic, as was tax. With revenue of $43.5 billion, adding $15 billion to the Australian economy in 2017, the aviation industry is massive and can provide plenty of opportunity for investors. S3 Ep 141Classic Ep: Why Alan Kohler is Disgusted with Warren Buffett
For this episode we're reliving one of our favourite all-time episodes - our interview with Alan Kohler. Released in September 2017 (episode 18 of Equity Mates) we spoke to the ABC Journalist and former editor of the Australian Financial Review about his life, career and thoughts on the market.
