Moshe sends twelve spies into the land of Canaan. They return forty days later with a huge bunch of grapes, a pomegranate, and a fig to report a lush and bountiful land. But ten spies warn that the land's inhabitants are giants and warriors "mightier than we"; only Caleb and Yehoshua insist that it can be conquered, as Elohim has indicated. Elohim decrees that Israel's entry into the land must be delayed for forty years, during which time the entire generation will perish in the wilderness. A group of repentant Jews rush over the mountain at the edge of the Land but are rejected by the Amalekites and Canaanites. The laws of menachot (offerings of flour, wine, and oil) are given, as well as the requirement to consecrate part of the dough (challah) to God when baking bread. A man violates Shabbat by carrying branches and is punished with death. Elohim instructs us to place tzitzit on the four ends of our garments as a reminder of our mitzvot.
