SHELAJ LEJA Moshe sends twelve spies to the Land of Canaan. They return forty days later, carrying a huge bunch of grapes, a pomegranate, and a fig, to report on a lush and kind land. But ten of the 12 spies warn that the inhabitants are giants and warriors "mightier than us"; only Caleb and Joshua insist that the land can be conquered, as Elohim indicated. People cry and prefer to go back to Egypt. Elohim decrees that Israel's entry into the land must be delayed for forty years, during which time the entire generation will die in the wilderness. The laws of Menachot (offerings of flour, wine, and oil) are given, as well as the precept to consecrate part of the dough (challah) to Elohim. A man violates Shabbat when he carries branches and is punished with capital punishment. Elohim instructs to put fringes (Tzitzit) on the four ends of the garments to remember the observance of the Mitzvot (percepts of HaShem)
