BEHAALOTEJA Aaron lights the candles of the Menorah (seven-branched candlestick), and the tribe of Levi starts the service in the sanctuary. A "Second Passover" is introduced as an answer to the question "Why should we be disadvantaged?" raised by a group of Jews who did not offer the Passover sacrifice at the proper time because they were ritually unclean. Elohim instructs Moshe on procedures for Israel's journeys and camps in the wilderness, and the people travel in formation from Mount Sinai, where they had camped for about a year. People are dissatisfied with the "lechem of heaven" (manna) and demand that Moshe provide them with meat. Moshe appoints 70 elders, whom he emanates from his spirit, to assist him with governing the people. Miriam makes a negative comment about Moshe and is punished with tzaraat - a kind of leprosy; Moshe prays for his healing, and the whole community waits seven days for his recovery.
