Show Notes

Kurdish immigrant sentenced to 16 years for smuggling $35M opium into Canada: A fifty-three-year-old Kurdish immigrant from Iran, Sohrab Hanareh-Mafarani, was sentenced to sixteen years in prison for smuggling over five hundred kilograms of opium into Canada. The opium, hidden in boxes of turmeric, had a street value of about thirty-five million dollars. Hanareh-Mafarani, a permanent resident since 2010, was convicted on charges including importing the drug and conspiracy to traffic it. He played a key role in the plot alongside others, including two co-conspirators who were also found guilty. The court considered his high-level involvement and greed-driven motives against his family support and hard-working life in construction. With time served credited, he faces another fourteen years and eleven months behind bars, plus the risk of deportation back to Iran upon release.
