Show Notes

The SS Explorer, Scotlands first purpose-built fisheries research vessel, has received a £157,115 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This funding will help preserve the ship, which spent 28 years advancing fishing tech, marine biology, pollution checks, and early climate studies. Built in Aberdeen with a rare riveted steel hull and one of Scotlands last triple-expansion steam engines, she was nearly scrapped after decommissioning in 1984. Volunteers from the SS Explorer Preservation Society stepped in, buying her back from breakers and towing her to Leith docks. Now, theyre thrilled with the support, as it bolsters their push to turn the ship into a floating museum, education center, and event venue for Leith and north Edinburgh. The cash will cover urgent repairs, expand community outreach, and fund a feasibility study for her future as a visitor spot. Shell even open to guests during the Edinburgh Science Festival from April 4th to April 19th, 2026, before shifting to a new public berth. Local MP Ben Macpherson hailed the grant as key progress for this unique piece of Scottish heritage, paving the way for economic boosts and hands-on marine learning right in Leith.
