White terns, or manu-o-Kū, are thriving in downtown Honolulu, with their population surging by more than fifty percent over the past decade. These seabirds, known for signaling land to traditional navigators, are breeding year-round without nests, laying eggs on bare branches or ledges, and their chicks cling tight until they fly. Despite housing one million people, Oahu is the only main island where theyve settled. New data shows breeding adults hit three thousand six hundred, up one point five times since 2016, due to fewer rats and cats near buildings, busy roads scaring off predators, and trimmed trees creating perfect egg spots.
