Rodolfo Rudy Acuna, a pioneering political activist, historian, and educator, has passed away at the age of ninety-three. He founded one of the nations first Chicano Studies programs at California State University Northridge in 1969 and taught there for nearly fifty years. Acunas influential textbook, Occupied America, remains a staple in classrooms today. Known for his sharp wit and bold lectures, he sparked debates among liberals, conservatives, and even some in the Latino community. Born in 1932 to Mexican immigrant parents in Los Angeles, Acuna earned advanced degrees in history and Latin American studies. He won a lawsuit against another university over age discrimination in 1991, securing over $325,000 for scholarships for his students at Northridge. Acunas efforts reshaped how Latino history is taught, leaving a lasting mark on education and activism that continues to inspire new generations.
