North Carolinas most common venomous snake, the copperhead, accounts for over ninety percent of bites in the state. With six species, including cottonmouths, rattlesnakes, and coral snakes, copperheads are most frequently encountered near homes in wooded areas. Activity peaks from spring to fall, with March and July seeing the highest bite reports. Recognizable features include triangular heads and cat-like pupils on vipers, or banded colors on corals. If bitten, wash the wound, elevate it, stay still, and contact poison control or emergency services.
