Maria Palmer, a sixty-five-year-old Hispanic leader from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, has spent decades championing the Hispanic community and shattering barriers for immigrants. Born in Peru, she moved to the U.S. at seventeen, married her husband Michael, and raised three bilingual children. Palmer co-founded a Spanish immersion daycare and advocated for dual language programs in local schools, leading to success stories like medical school graduates. She made history as the first Latina on North Carolinas State Board of Education and the first Latina on the Chapel Hill Town Council. Amidst rising fears in immigrant communities, Palmer continues her advocacy work, encouraging people to keep working and sending their kids to school. Shes just getting started this Womens History Month.
