In the summer of 1979, Debbie Fleser discovered her fathers past as a member of the Cloudbuster Nine, a World War Two Navy training team at UNC Chapel Hill, featuring big league stars like Ted Williams and Johnny Pesky, along with future presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush. This squad, formed in 1943, consisted of pilot trainees who bonded over baseball. Fleser, a college outfielder from Michigan, enlisted to chase his flying dreams and ended up with lifelong friends. Author Anne Keenes book shares these heroes tales, reminding us of the bonds formed through baseball during their service.
