Dead Idea Valhalla 32. Insert Six Punch-Bucks

These girls are promoting.

My favorite thing about Dead Idea Valhalla was when I did shit like this. Inspired by PAX and the idiots behind NOS, I put together this. Enjoy!

Special thanks to Nick Glauber for being my Nos Energy.

Also: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4fGqqenQa0

Dead Idea Valhalla 31. Greece, the land of Milkhoney, Sodomy Pots and Rome

Danger lurks within.

Here it is, the entire Dungeon Mister saga! Based on...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8LBpMuSTrQ

One of my all time favorite things ever.

Not too much to say about this, but I'm a big fan.

Dead Idea Valhalla 30. Scurvy Curves

RUN.

This is a goooood ep.

The first half, a little bit about my job history contains some fun stories and some awful ones.

The middle song, a number called Don't No, comes from a little EP I like quite a bit that, in retrospect, is FULL of anxiety about my doomed marriage! Listening back to it is almost embarrassing given how transparent it is. "The idiot chaos in the center of my heart marked a date on a calendar that I had to follow." Criminy!

But the real star of the show is the feral princess to the left here. I don't know why I enjoy it so much, but these fake greatest hits things really tickle me.

Dead Idea Valhalla 29. The Constant Death of Regular Humans

Here's a little bit of cruelty that isn't going to age that well.

The first bit is something I'm not totally into anymore! I do think it's silly to mourn celebrities, for the most part, but I also realize it's very unkind. If I did this again, I might tone it down a little bit. It does mean that I get to say I wrote a song called Pussystorm USA, however.

The song in the middle, officially titled Victim but that I always refer to as Sad Eyes is a favorite, however.

And finally, more Dinobite action with Gallagher 3, who has been shitting in the litter box.

Dead Idea Valhalla 28. And They Called Him Demolition Man...

And they called him...

The first segment is a tirade about weather that's pretty uninspired, I admit! But it gets better!

The song in the middle is from The Midnite Snax, my 2nd rock band in my home town, and a song from my song-a-day project. It's about the character Bub from my favorite George Romero movie, Day of the Dead.

The real meat, however, is "Gary Butterfield's Boring Party." I love this bland playlet. I've always been fascinated by people who are fascinated by the truly mundane, and how sad that is. At some point, people just start thinking everything is worth bringing up and it always amazes me.

Apr 25, 201329 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 27. Sex Copse

Tommy's Too.

The Sex Trillogy Concludes! Though I guess I talk about sex quite a bit. First, the Tiny Beings Errata, with the fakey Stan Lee voice, who I called Granny Guzzlin' Gary, which is fucking disgusting.

In the middle, the only cover The Metroids ever recorded. It's more or less faithful.

Then, some more Gallagher 3, because it's not like he's the worst thing I ever made.

Apr 15, 201328 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 26. Shirts for Uncles

Save time by having your shirt say this to everyone you'd say it to.

Part two of the sex trillogy. Fun little bit in the first half, in the guise of fake deleted scenes. Nothing much to say.

In the middle: one of the saddest songs I think I've ever done.

Then some stuff about shirts and sex. Solid ep, bro.

Apr 8, 201329 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 25. Sex and the Mud Duck

Thigh party and also a great sport!

It's the 25th Episode Spectacular! A bit about father's day, sex, and the awakening of sports appreciation in me.

Then a song from my Master Wrench record.

Finally, a return of the Dinobite, this time starring world famous comedian Gallagher 3. You can find the original episodes of the Dinobite at www.garybutterfield.net

Apr 1, 201331 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 24. Skateboard for Legs!

Let's all revisit our favorite musical!

One of my favorites.

This first bit is all about drugs! Spoiler: I'm not that into them.

Then comes the title track from the 2nd Metroids album, My Fiction Suit. It's a little quiet in the mix, unfortunately, but it's all OK because...

One of my favorite things I did with Dead Idea Valhalla was making it self referencial as hell. In an early episode, I did a short advert for Hobotown the Musical, along with some fakey song titles. I thought it'd be fun to actually write choruses for all of those songs. It was work intensive, but I love it all the same.

Mar 25, 201331 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 23. Fragments

Handsome...aren't I?

First off, a thanks to Lou of Lou Reads the Internet for You! for his help with the intro! It's one of my favorite podcasts.

So, "The Slender-Rap is definitely a little embarassing. But yeah, I love the idea of abject evil being more annoying than anything.

The song in the middle is an unsung favorite of mine from the Metroids. The mix is really suboptimal and doesn't highlight Bojan's great riffing during the chorus.

And then some talk about race relations from another very white dude.

Dead Idea Valhalla Neo Tokyo Ep.1

Where is the party gland?

I know it's bad form to end on a cliff hanger but consider this a sorbet between thrilling episodes of your regularly scheduled program. I've been threatening forever and here it is. New Dead Idea Valhalla. Will this trend continue? Maybe!

The first part is just sort of a check in on the general shambles of my life. It's aimless but what else is new?

The song is from the covers club, one of the entries I'm really happy about.

The final part, which is really the reason why I wanted to do the episode, is born of a conversation I was having with my funny girlfriend about Moby Dick. Enjoy! Tell me what you think. More demand might equal more episodes.

Mar 11, 201327 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 22. Emerald Wasps

Where's Waldo?

First up, I love this pair of episodes. This catchy little bit in the first part is improvised, one of the few times having a keybaord right next to me worked out. Watch out for hints in this first part as to what's going to happen!

So, other than hints, I have this little bit about secrets (theme!)

The middle song is R'yleh, a song from an EP available at my site. (theme!)

And then shit happens! Again, I'm very proud of how these two episodes turned out. Silly, dated, but still this makes me smile.

Mar 4, 201324 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 21. Hitting Me is Like Climbing a Mountain

Only real dumb dumbs punch, kids.

Lots to like here! I love this pair of episodes, I like this weird direction for the show. First off, the season 2 theme music, which I really enjoy.

The music episode I mention is the first episode of Talk About Music, a side show I did that I'll probably put on my own personal site at some point. The first is a bit about violence in my life, which plays a really small part! Hooray!

In the middle, a song from an album that you can find on my site. Again: www.garybutterfield.net. If you like it, go grab it!

In the 2nd half, we have a really long bit about my feelings on religion/god. Take it or leave it! Some of my opinions on this have softened a little. I still don't believe at all but I deeply love some believers. Conflict! A weird episode for a season premeire but things get weirder next episode.

Feb 25, 201329 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 20. Book Boy Rides Again (Season Finale!)

Please visit my website.

Just listen to that throat clear! It was so perfect I had to use it!

Why do I always want to organize things in seasons? I talk about it a little bit here but it doesn't make much sense. Still, this contains my masterful Danny Elfman impression (recently referenced on Watch Out For Fireballs!) and then some fun high school stories.

Pretty fun Midnite Snax song about cats and then, hoo boy.

I'm not sure that Willy Thimbles and Robert Moulet are quite worthy of a season finale. I take a break between this season and the next and it was desperately needed. I brought these guys back in the finale and I think they might be the most obscure, technically recurring characters in the show.

Feb 18, 201328 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 19. Benie Mac's All Seeing Eyes

Like a doll's eyes....

Listen to that sad sackery in the beginning! Also, get your lips away from that microphone, past me! Ugh!

A little bit about the separation of art and artist, name checking both Lovecraft and Scott Adams!

Fairly terrible song in the middle, from a scary song compilation that never went anywhere. I actually really like the solo on this one. Also, thanks to my friend Austin Cliffe for helping me record it and playing the autoharp, as well as speaking on the bridge. The middle of this song was pretty fun to record.

Finally, it's Jame Soup's DREAM CAMP!!! I love everything that man has ever touched.

Feb 12, 201320 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 18. How Can I Concentrate on these Mashed Potatoes!?

A handy distraction to stop you from constantly beating off!

Good god! The mouth noises!

A lot of these observations about college hold up in light of my recent experiences with that institution. Hell is other people and a lot of the time, I'm in a constant state of barely supressed rage!

The middle song is one of the best from my Master Wrench album, something I remain pretty proud of, despite some low points.

And I conclude this part of 88 Lines with Zak. It comes back later in the show and there's some talk of doing it for Duckfeed, so we'll see if that works out.

Feb 4, 201330 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 17. Rich Creamy Vein

Dig in!

This is a defeated man right here. At this time, my mother had suffered a series of heart attacks. I didn't have enough energy to do a whole big thing, thus the lazy first part of this. Not lazy, I suppose, but this might be one of the signs of the show disolving. I'm desparately casting about for ways to promote the show, I'm name checking cross promotional stuff, etc. My plugs song never was chosen, sadly, nor my Jukebox Jury entry. Oh well!

The song in the middle is something I'm relatively happy with it. Short little EP you can find on my site.

Then I continue my lo fi talk with Zak about girls.

Jan 28, 201325 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 16. Just More Kung Fun

What a disappointment!

I'm a pretty big fan of this episode! Some ear wormy nonsense about "houses" in the beginning, a little bit called You Know What I Fuckin' Hate? that was going to be a recurring segment but never got repeated.

Then we have the first hot hot hit from The Metroids, a song called Make Way For The Nextmen.

Then, finally, a 3 part segment I did with my buddy Zak about love, romance and relationships! I sort of want to turn this into an actual show but who knows if that will happen. In retrospect, given that this predates my divorce, it's a little uneasy. Also, Zak's audio quality isn't exactly top of the pops. Oh well!

Jan 21, 201326 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 15. Pestomancer

Oh! The place of many indignities! Jupiter's Thunder!

I'm balancing some serious and some silly here.

The first part is me recounting my experience with the NIU School Shooting a few years back, both in story form and in a song I wrote about it. I expand a bit about evil in the world, etc. High minded stuff for a podcast that later features a song called Pussystorm USA. That song is my favorite that a band I played with called The Midnite Snax. It's all about tension and release.

In the second half, I call in some guest stars to continue the saga of The Dungeon Mister. This will later get wrapped up and forms a pretty fun 3 part sketch thing. Thanks to Ryan Green and Mike Kitchell for their help!

Jan 14, 201325 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 14. Butterfly Porkchop

Frightful biology.

Probably a below average episode. The first half has a little pop screen nonsense and then something that can't really be construed as anything other than agism. But you know, ehhhhhh.

The song is probably the oldest thing I have recorded from one of my earliest bands, HiLo. There is a LOT of HiLo that went unrecorded, which breaks my heart.

And then the disgusting finale of Taint Misbehavin' which ends in exactly the way it has to, really.

Jan 8, 201320 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 13. A Touch of Gray

Careful! She's right there!

This is one of my favorite things I've ever done. My favorite things I ever did with the show were to fuck with the show. This, the Slenderman arc in the beginning of season 2, the finale, all stuff I'm really proud of.

So, the first part I consider to be pretty impeccable.

The song in the middle is the first track on the last Metroids album, which again, I'm really into.

Then we have the 2nd part of Taint Misbehaving, which I do like, but it's sort of lazy. I did these extended 2nd bits, that didn't require writing, when I wanted to do more ambitious first bits, I think. In either case, I really like this episode.

Dec 31, 201219 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 12. When Taints Misbehave

If you meet someone wearing this shirt, unmeet them.

Fun episode!

As a porn enthusiast, I notice a lot of things about it. Like how it's god damned ridiculous. The first part is about that.

I threw in a song from my song-a-day project from February 2008 that eventually made it to my short lived but well loved band Joystick Joy.

Finally, we have the first of a three part bit wherein I interview my friend Steve about a ghastly experience he had. Trivia! This wasn't meant to have a sequel where he interviewed me as I have had a similarly terrible incident.

Dec 28, 201221 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 11. Songs One

This is what pornography looks like to me.

Not much to say about good ol' episode 11. It's a breather and it sounds like one. Still, I liked this idea enough to do a few other shows in this style, but under a different moniker.

Next week, I'll be back with more classic style Dead Idea Valhalla and the week after I should have something brand new to put up. I was originally going to record some more original fiction to throw up here but the story I had in mind had a lot of internal monologue, which is demarcated from narration by italics. It's hard to vocalize italics!

Dec 17, 201222 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 10. Greasy Tasty

Greasy and tasty!

There are only a couple episodes I think are relatively uninspired and this is one of them. Why didn't I title this episode starchy wad? Anyway, I'm not crazy about the first half of this episode. I have some barely informed opinions about food science, some of which I stand by, some of which I don't, especially in relation to my current dietary restrictions. Time makes fools of us all!

The song is from a little EP that I did, one of the first things I recorded while living in Portland and I'm a big fan.

The second bit is probably going age really poorly and might be a little hard to follow. My wife at the time was watching a whole lot of Miami Ink and L.A. Ink, which I think is more or less bunko, even by the standards of reality TV. And I'll watch some reality TV, as long as it contains treasure hunting of some kind. But these shows bugged me with it's thuggish attitude and obnoxious characters. Further, the rotating cast of people looking to get tattoos were selected based on how sentimental and tear jerky their ideas were. So, I threw together a bunch of characters into a sort of beerslam: Behehehndrehndehendehenen Ink.

Most of the shop characters don't appear again, probably because I felt uncomfortable about doing foreign accents. I did, however, draw a picture of Mutaro that is terrifying.

Dec 10, 201225 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 9. Parenting

Look how happy they are.

This is largely considered to be a good starting episode for the show! Listening back, I wish I had better mic technique and didn't say "you know" as much. I think one reason I'm constantly stumbling in my words is because the subject matter is so personal. I'm comfortable sharing but it's still hard to talk about sometimes.

The first half is maybe the first time I've gotten really personal but it was important for me to not be cagey. I think at a certain point, you realize that hey, this is your life, there's no use pretending anything didn't happen. However, I might just be saying that because it hasn't fucked me just yet. Will this episode stop me from getting a job at some point? Probably!

The song is from a brief solo project and is short and poppy.

The end bit is probably why this episode is so well thought of. It's one of the first really produced things I've done, it introduces a character I'd go on to use, and it's batshit insanity was at least somewhat natural. The Brain Camp sketch was inspired by a note I wrote to myself that said, I shit you not, "paint turtles on breasts to keep kid away." It's also inspired by the absolute terror of live action ninja turtles as featured in the We Wish You A Turtle Christmas video. I had a serious laughing fit with my friends Brayton (of The Pitch) and Jeremy after watching this nonsense. Check it out!

Oh, and this is the premeire of the ending theme song that I was always pretty proud of.

Dec 3, 201221 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 8. Noisily Devouring a Still Beating Human Heart

This man is one shower away from being a lucky boy.

For some reason, at this point, I thought the overwhelming negativity of my podcast and personality was a bug, not a feature, so I needed to talk about something positive. That's where this comes from.

In the middle, I have a song from my rap group, HWP, and it's definitely the high water mark of that band. That was a partnership with my very funny, very talented friend Austin Cliffe.

The last half of the episode has a couple of commissioned songs I wrote. The first one, for my buddy Tony Zanker, suffers from some sour vocals but I think the 2nd one, written for my friend Mike Kitchell, is top shelf.

Nov 26, 201219 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 7. El Debarge with Bears

Feeling Brave Tonight?

One of my all time favorites.

The first part contains some whining, complaining and ranting.

The song in the middle is something I'm pretty proud of and that I'm unable to remember how to play, which is ridiculous, but it's true.

The real meat though, is the end bit, an extended reference to this.

I enlisted some friends to work on this segment, which would eventually becoming a recurring character. The entire saga is eventually collected but for now, it's just me, my friends Jon Wolff (Gatorboy) and Derek Hayes.

Nov 19, 201219 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 6: Dippy Crust No No

When he gets up, there's going to be a big pile of Hobo Grease.

And here's the second part of my probably very cruel animalization of homeless people. I wonder if history will judge me harshly?

It doesn't matter though when we have such delightful treats. Brayton is back with his performance as Dr. Brace Grodin. We've got my favorite song by my band The Midnite Snax and we have yet another fakey interview, this time with a full song from the Hobotown musical.

If you like Brayton (and you should), keep an eye on Duckfeed.tv for a brand new show he and I are collaborating on. Love it? You're gonna like it!

Nov 12, 201221 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 5: The Bindle Suite

Pre suitcase technology

Here we have several firsts for Dead Idea Valhalla. In the first half, we have my first guest spot with my very funny friend Brayton playing a noted Hobologist. (his voice is a dead on ringer for ST Joshi)

This interview is continued in the next episode, making this the first two part segment.

The 2nd segment has the return of two characters from my former podcasting life and the first of my greatest hits style lists of song choruses. The sound quality isn't perfect but I always loved those.

Also, the song in the middle is a personal favorite. I'm pretty into this episode!

Dead Idea Valhalla Original Fiction: The Pathetic Fallacy

Hello! Here is a special Halloween surprise: a dramatic reading of a piece of fiction I did for Insomnia Press.

Sorry about the interuption to the regular feed. DIV syndication will continue next week!

Oct 31, 201212 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 4: The Tyranny of Literacy

Looks innocent but know that only misery lives here.

Merry Christmas! I arranged a Christmas version of the song! This show was weekly! I don't want to sound like I'm tooting my own horn or to belabor the point but man, the time this thing would take, I tells ya. It's almost as if someone making it wouldn't have time for healthy relationships!

This marks the beginning of the "around a half hour" length but I remember promoting it as double length. In my experience, podcasts end up about double what you anticipate. Luckily, length bloat went no further than that.

The misery here is real and the stories are real.

The 2nd bit doesn't quite come together as well as I thought it would but Dr. Sbaitso remains a pleasure.

Oh, and this is the first appearance of the whiny outro. I realize it sucks eventually, trust me!

Oct 22, 201224 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 3: Gay Little Milano Cookie

Will they discover the secret of the scepter?

Here's the third episode, ya mugs! Controversial! This is when I started sort of putting episodes together with themes in mind. It's also the first time I recorded a song specifically for the episode. Think about how labor intensive that is!

The back half of this remains one of my favorite things I've ever done and it's the first time I've done an audio play style segment for the show. I had this idea years ago but never knew what to do with it. Now it's hear, in your ears!

Oct 15, 201214 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 2: I Walk Away and I Strumbo

FUCKING FERAL.

Episode 2 is where things take off, I think. A lot of things that make the show what it is first show up here. Repurposing editing mistakes, lists, improvised conversations and my pitch perfect Macy Gray impersonation. A coworker once got ahold of the podcast and said, "What the fuck do you have against Mariah Carey?" True story.

I've got nothing against Macy Gray. I just happen to know that she has a lot of inhuman traits.

The 2nd half is already dated and I wish I had never done it!

Oct 8, 201212 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 1: The Extinction of the Dinocast

Never fear! The Cosmic Fool is here!

This is it! The beginning! The first episode of Dead Idea Valhalla! Me, being who I am, created the beginning of a new show by focusing on the past. The beginning features a lengthy treatise on the end of the Dinocast as well as an unreleased song from my band, The Metroids.

Afterwards, we really get into the meat of the show with a bit of railing against this whole Keep Portland Weird nonsense. Trivia: this bit started as a draft for an open mic comedy thing before I decided it'd be better as a podcast segment.

Oct 1, 201213 min

Dead Idea Valhalla 0: Mostly About My Breasts

GRAPES! WHERE ARE MY GRAPES!

Here it is! Hello! You in the back, skootch closer. Don't be shy. This is the first episode on Dead Idea Valhalla to appear on the Duckfeed flock of podcasts. My name is Gary Butterfield and you probably know me as one half of Watch Out For Fireballs! In addition to WOFF! I do a whole shit ton of other stuff, including a wealth of past tense podcastery. That stuff lives at my site but because synergy is a business solution you can be proud of, the flagship show, Dead Idea Valhalla, lives here now!

Just what is Dead Idea Valhalla? Well, this episode is designed to tell you just that! Don't be so god damned impatient. Back to the desk in the back, Sherman. Just kidding. It's a comedy/therapy/musical variety show about my life and my slow decent into madness. It features rants, sketches, recurring characters and guest spots. In fact, this first episode might feature an old friend from this very network. But I'm not telling! Give it a listen!

A special thanks to Kole Ross and Jon Wolff for lending their talents, vocal and otherwise.
