S4 Ep 8Drinking Socially - S4 Ep. 8: To Go Please
"To go" has been our only dining and imbibing option for a year now. Have we all collectively maxed out the "To Go Please" badge on Untappd yet? This week, our focus is on leveling up the badge that shows love to our friendly neighborhood bodegas, gas stations, bottle shops, supermarkets, and more. You picked up that six-pack at the flea market down the road? Score! Purchased At - tag it. By tagging your Purchased At location, you're reminding your future hazy-dazy self where you picked up that great IPA from. We're drinking H.A.Z.Y. from SweetWater Brewing Company, and highlighting The Pour House chain in Pennsylvania as our Verified Venue of the week which has H.A.Z.Y on tap and a fantastic selection of craft beer. Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S4 Ep 7Drinking Socially - S4 Ep. 7: New Brew Thursday
New Brew Thursday, we all know it as an excuse to intentionally seek out a beer you've never had before, but it's also one of the hardest badges to max out on Untappd. Why is that? Tune in to find out! We're chipping away at this badge with Vliet from Threes Brewing and highlighting Garden Harvest Market in Holland, OH as our Verified Venue of the week! Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S4 Ep 6Drinking Socially - S4 Ep. 6: Schwarz-buckler
Who needs buried treasure when you have beer!? This episode we're going after the Schwarz-buckler badge with Flying Machine Brewing Company's most recent release, Nightfall on Lager Mountain. We're highlighting the Verified Venue, Share House in Moscow, Russia - so far the number one venue for the Drinking Socially Season 4 badge! Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S4 Ep 5Drinking Socially - S4 Ep. 5: Taster, Please
At a new place and don't want to choose a pint of something you may not like? Grab a few tasters! Enjoy some small pours and then decide which to upgrade to a full pour. That's right, this episode is all about tasters, and we all know that everything good starts with a taste. We're taking a looking at the Taster, Please badge and both tasting a brand-new-to-us beer, Lo-Pitch Hazy IPA from High Wire Brewing and highlighting their Wilmington, NC taproom as the Verified Venue of the week. Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S4 Ep 4Drinking Socially - S4 Ep. 4: Tag, You're It
Tag is universally a good time. This week we're talking about a contactless form of tag - tagging your friends in your check-ins. Since last year's Year in Beer revealed that we made it into each other's "drinking buddies" list's because we tag each other so much we figured we'd share some beers that we gave each other tonight - and tag ourselves in the check-ins too! So grab a beer and tag a friend to spread the love. Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S4 Ep 3Drinking Socially - S4 Ep. 3: Sky's The Limit
We love beers with a little extra ABV. Don't you? This week's spotlight is on the "Sky's The Limit" badge. You don't always intend to go for beers with a double-digit ABV, but when you do, you make it count! Be careful, 10% and up can really pack a punch. Get ready for some late night show antics as we crack open 2 beers that should probably be shared with friends... but that's a different badge. Harrison's drinking Pastry Works from Froth Brewing Co., a Pastry Stout with Peanut Butter, Graham Cracker, Coconut and Milk Sugar. Jon's drinking Dia De Los Muertos (Ghost 906) from Adroit Theory. At 13.7% ABV, this Russian Imperial Stout is the perfect balance between Bitter and Sweet, Creamy and Full Bodied, or Roasty and Malty. Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S4 Ep 2Drinking Socially - S4 Ep. 2: For The Can
We're recording this episode off the back of Beer Can Appreciation Day. We figured we'd keep the party going by featuring the badge, "For The Can". Canning is all the rage and it's not hard to see why - travels well, more environmentally friendly, and no need to carry your bottle opener. We're leveling up this badge with Thick Haze by Oskar Blues Brewery! Crack open a can-tastic beer and level up with us for this episode. What We’re Drinking:Thick Haze - Oskar Blues Breweryhttps://untappd.com/b/oskar-blues-brewery-thicc-haze/3794310 ABV: 7%Style: IPA - New EnglandIBU: 45Notes: This full on Hazy IPA has a vibrant white head and a creamy mouthfeel that offers intense hop aromas and flavors of pineapple, mango, grapefruit, lemon, strawberry, honeysuckle. S4 Ep 1Drinking Socially - S4 Ep. 1: Newbie
Redaction: At 15:30 Harrison asks Jon if you need to drink "Uniques" to level up the Milestone badges. Jon said that they do not need to be Unique. Jon was wrong. 🤦♂ Milestone badges are only levelled up via Unique Beers. What We’re Drinking:Anchor Steam Beer - Anchor Brewing Companyhttps://untappd.com/b/anchor-brewing-company-anchor-steam-beer/6204ABV: 4.9%Style: California CommonIBU: 33Notes: San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.SponsorShow off your love of Untappd. S3 Ep 34Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 34: Is It Christmas Yet?
Season 3 is coming to a close - what a year! Let's celebrate and go out with a bomb! Throw a fire in the fireplace - just make sure your Christmas tree is a safe distance away since you probably forgot to keep watering it about a week or so ago. But that's ok - beer is here to save the day. And not just any beer, the perfect beer for this day - in this month - in this year. This time of year demands something big and toasty and roasty and that's exactly what's in the bottle. Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? S3 Ep 33Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 33: The Year In Beer!
It's hard to believe it was a year ago that Harrison and Jon were talking about the 'Year in Beer' — and we all know what a joyful quagmire 2020 has been... instead of reflecting on the things we wish were different — we're going to focus this episode on the things that were great! We're officially halfway through our Advent Box and it's going to be bringing some Pennsylvania Madness to the show today — but we're also recapping our Untappd Year In Beer! We've already seen so many of you talking about it in the Facebook group, I can't wait to see if Harrison has more uniques than Jon did — I can make a safe prediction we both drank a lot of beer at Home! This episode we're drinking Mad Elf from Tröegs Independent Brewing. Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S3 Ep 32Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 32: Beers In A Box...
Surprise beer is here! If you've been following along with us on Twitter, we have been drinking a new surprise beer out of our beer advent boxes each day since the start of December. And today we're finally going to drink one together. It's a little chilly so we're hoping for a big ol' stout, or maybe a Christmas beer? We'll learn what it is about 3 minutes into the show...Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S3 Ep 31Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 31: Mount Beermore
Mount Beermore was created because our talented producer was drinking beer on Vacation — well — it wasn't a vacation, it was a Wednesday... The idea was stolen from Mount Rushmore which is a gigantic rock in South Dakota — Gutzon Borglum was charged with choosing who to put on that monument — and even the US Bureau of National Parks likes to ask "who would you put up there if it were your decision?" We took that idea and applied it to Beer. We looked for the Founding Breweries of our own Beer Journey... we'll catch you up on the first 3 to get 'carved in stone' — but this episode is about the final piece of the puzzle/monument/mountain.... the 4th and final selection in our Mount Beermore! Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S3 Ep 30Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 30: Seek The Seal
Tonight we're drinking local - Pillow Fort from Edmund's Oast and Flying Machine! The local part is extremely fitting - because while today is one of the biggest drinking days of the year in the US — we are already thinking about this Sunday, November 29th; aka Small Brewers Sunday! Untappd has partnered up with the Brewers Association to celebrate with beer lovers and we encourage everyone to support independent breweries, brewpubs, and taprooms. Seek the Independent Craft Brewer Seal, and purchase craft beer for your holiday festivities. And for those of you who aren't in the US, look for your own Country's independent seal, like SIBA in the UK, the Independent Craft Seal in Canada, and #ASKFORINDIEBEER in Australia! Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S3 Ep 29Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 29: Treehouse In The Sky
On Drinking Socially every beer that we haven’t checked-in is a beer we want to drink. Sometimes the allure of a top-rated brewery becomes too much to ignore.. and sometimes... we get really lucky! On this episode, Christmas comes early, and brings a whole Treehouse! That’s right — we got our hands on some of the most elusive beers in the world, and we’re about to see if the hype is real! (Spoiler: it is) We're drinking Green by Tree House Brewing Company! Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S3 Ep 28Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 28: God Save The Queen
Double trouble? 2 for 1? Double bubbles? That works - what we're trying to say is we're drinking two beers today - and we'll be doing the same next week! We're starting across the pond with a brewery hailing from Wokingham, England. Once famous for its bell making and silk mills, now craft beer fans are being drawn in by the intoxicating beers this brewery pumps out. They're almost too good to resist...as their name suggests. We're drinking Be Even More Pacific IPA and Neo Normal IPA by Siren Craft Brew! Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S3 Ep 27Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 27: The Final Beer 101 With Special Guest Ryan Wheaton
We began our Beer 101 Series on June 17th, Season 3, Episode 13. That was a feature about Hops... we've since covered all 4 vital ingredients in a beer, how to turn them into beer, and what to do with it afterward — on this episode, we're bringing in Ryan Wheaton from the Branding Brews Podcast and Craft Brew Creative to talk about how marketing plays a role into the beers we drink. We're sipping Doom Sauce by Lord Hobo Brewing in this episode. Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S3 Ep 26Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 26: A Haunted NEIPA
We are knee deep into spooky season! And we'd be doing you all a disservice if we didn't enjoy another kind of beer that goes well with this time of year. "TNT" would've called this a "New Classic" back in the day as it may not be making all the hip/cool beer list's yet. But Drinking Socially is once again a step ahead - we're talking about Monster Beers! And no, we don't mean a large beer (check out our Stovepipe Episode 23 for that!) We're talking about beers that are actually named after monsters. We're drinking Batsquatch by Rogue Ales! — so grab your favorite creature feature crafty and let's wolf out on some special brews that may just bite back! 🐺🍻 Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S3 Ep 25Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 25: The Vikings Did It First
This episode is going to be different. We're going still going to be Jon & Harrison talking about beer, and sometimes candy — but today we're not even doing to drink a beer. This episode features something like beer in that you can find it in bottles and cans, you can drink enough of it to love your favorite sports team, or celebrate a day off of work — and it's (mostly) full of bubbles. You can enjoy it thoroughly in any season, but it's different depending on where you live... but don't worry -- you can still get a badge for drinking Cider 🍻 🍎 We're drinking Blood Amulet by B. Nektar Meadery! Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S3 Ep 24Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 24: Punkins
At a minimum pumpkins have become their own food group, and at the other it's extreme it's become a way of life! This year we're eating pumpkin cinnamon buns for breakfast and pumpkin pasta for dinner.... and pumpkin toothpaste as a reprieve?? We've got one of the most well known Pumpkin Beers in the country with us today: Punkin Ale by Dogfish Head. We'll cover the style in BJCP, as well as the popular question... to Rim? or not to Rim? Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S3 Ep 23Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 23: Stovepipes!
What are those giant cans? We're drinking the canned version of a bomber as we talk about beer, Untappd's upcoming Euro-Fest, and Packaging! Featured this week is Stone IPA by Stone Brewing. "Now one of the most well-respected and best-selling IPAs in the country, this golden beauty explodes with citrusy flavor and hop aromas, all perfectly balanced by a subtle malt character. This crisp, extra hoppy brew is hugely refreshing on a hot day, but will always deliver no matter when you choose to drink it." Plus — Harrison gives us a BJCP breakdown of the American IPA. We're 90% done with Beer 101, and still only 70% done with this beer! Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S3 Ep 22Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 22: Double Dry Hopped
We're going to be drinking a beer from the Music City, USA, or more formally the Minneapolis of the South? Of course, we're talking about Nashville, TN. We're drinking Homestyle by Bearded Iris Brewing a juicy IPA at 6%, packed full of mosaic. We'll also ask a slippery "would-you-rather", learn about Citra hops, Untappd's plans to celebrate 10 years! Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email [email protected].
S3 Ep 21Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 21: Cellaring & Lagering
We're bringing Oktoberfest back to the 'States, and covering Vienna Lager in the Style Guideline. But's it's also Cellaring and Lagering on Beer 101 as we near the end of the series.. listen in as Harrison sheds some light on the Cellar, and Brite Tank, and even a little bit of Barrel Aging. We're drinking Octoberfest Beer by Bell's Brewery.

S3 Ep 12Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 12 - The Heroes of the Beer Shelf
We've all responded to Spring 2020 differently than our New Years' resolution planned for — but one thing that has been undeniable is the increase in our consumption of 'core beers'. The 15 packs, and 24-packs of beers. The purchases normally reserved for a weekend camp trip, or tailgate. This episode we dive into some of the earliest of American Craft and re-visit the beers that paved the way for over 8000 Craft Breweries in the US. As you may expect, they're both amazing examples, and worth picking up the next time you're shopping to stock your fridge. Correction: In this episode Jon talks about a baseball game between the Cleveland Indians and The Texas Texans. ⚾️ This was a swing and a miss -- the Texas Rangers actually played the Cleveland Indians during the game we reference. (Thanks Chad!) What We’re Drinking:Samuel Adams Boston Lager by Boston Beerhttps://untappd.com/b/boston-beer-company-samuel-adams-boston-lager/3914ABV: 5%IBU: 30Notes: Samuel Adams Boston Lager® is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoration mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® also uses only the finest of ingredients including two-row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops.Pale Ale by Sierra Nevada Brewing Cohttps://untappd.com/b/sierra-nevada-brewing-co-pale-ale/6284ABV: 5.6%IBU: 38Notes: Our most popular beer, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a delightful interpretation of a classic style. It has a deep amber color and an exceptionally full-bodied, complex character. Generous quantities of premium Cascade hops give the Pale Ale its fragrant bouquet and spicy flavor.SponsorShow off your love of Untappd. S3 Ep 11Drinking Socially - S3 Ep. 11 - It's Gonna Be Mai....bock.
EPISODE SUMMARY: As we move through May, it felt important to pay homage to the beers that were designed with this month in mind. Join us as we drink through a very traditional example of a Maibock, and then delve into something a little more modern. Food pairings, outside activities, and a reason to stop and enjoy a variation of Lager that will be harder to find as the weeks go by after this episode. What We’re Drinking: 1516 by Red Oak Brewery Link: https://untappd.com/b/red-oak-brewery-1516/1522417 ABV: 7% IBU: 22 Notes: Red Oak’s 1516 Heller Bock, appealing to Connoisseurs of exceptional beers, is a strong, full-bodied, smooth bier. 1516 Heller Bock, golden in color, is Brewed according to the Bavarian 1516 Law of Purity. Glory Is Goldenbock by Burial & Zillicoah Beer Company Link: https://untappd.com/b/burial-beer-co-glory-is-goldenbock/3575781 ABV: 6% IBU: 30 Notes: Glory is a destination for those who follow the gospel. It gives a hearkened voice to the apostles of beverage, those who remind us that taste is an amalgamation of tradition and revival. So we got together with our friends down on the river at Zilicoah Beer Co., to forge an often drinkable, yet full-flavored lager. Inspired by the Hellesbock-styled golden lagers of Germany, we decided to tip a hat to the regional American brewers that breathed new life into those styles in the new world. Glory Is was made from German barley, noble hops, and forged through a full decoction before lagering to crystalline perfection. Fully aged. Never Sacrificed. Correction:At the 28:00 mark; we are talking about Oxygen in beer. Harrison mentions "500 Parts Per Million" of DO (Dissolved Oxygen). The correct measurement is Parts Per Billion. (Reference) Huge Cheers to Greig M for bringing this to our attention! What We’re Drinking:Barrel-Aged Narwhal by Sierra Nevada BrewingABV: 11.9%IBU: 50Notes: Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.Jon's Cellar: Black Ops by Brooklyn Brewery (2017 Version)ABV: 10.7%IBU: 70Notes: Intense Russian imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels and 100% bottle refermented.Harrison's Cellar: Big Bad Baptist by Epic Brewing Co (Release #33)ABV: 11.8%IBU: N/ANotes: One Big Bad Imperial Stout with Cocoa nibs and Coffee beans. Each season's release uses a different dark roasted coffee.Jenn's Cellar: Barrel Aged Wee Heavy by AleSmith Brewing Company (2014 Version)ABV: 10%IBU: N/ANotes: A classic Scotch Ale. Scotch ales are typically sweet and malty, with a very subdued dose of hops– just enough to provide balance. AleSmith Wee Heavy is a wonderful interpretation of this traditional Scotch style. A year spent in bourbon barrels adds another layer of rich sweetness.Badge Notes:Any version of these base beers (Any Year) should still unlock the Drinking Socially Podcast badge.SponsorGregslist offers realtime updated information on Bars/Restaurants/Stores/More who are open during the Covid-19 Pandemic. What We’re Drinking:Saison Dupont by Brasserie DupontABV: 6.5%IBU: 30Notes: Saison Dupont is a world classic beer and the yardstick for one of Belgium’s most important beer styles. It is the most admired AND imitated Saison in the world. A strong, vital yeast is key to full attenuation and thus to the style. Saison Dupont is straw colored with a dense creamy head. The nose is alive, like fresh raised bread, estery with citrus and spice notes. Full-bodied and malty, it sparkles on the palate and finishes with a zesty hop and citrus attack. Incredibly compatible with food!Saison by Allagash Brewing CompanyABV: 6.1%IBU: N/ANotes: A Maine interpretation of a classic Belgian farmhouse-style ale. What We’re Drinking:Ivan by Victory Art BrewingABV: 13%IBU: 100Notes: Our version of the imperial stout, in addition to a fair dose of dark malts, It contains many special malts - whiskey malt (six-row barley smoked on peat), peat brewing malt and Belgian brown malt. This adds to the viscous thick taste and coffee aroma the smells of fuel oil and creosote. High alcohol is masked by a complex aroma, but beware! Beer is great for long, cold winter evenings. It goes well with chocolate desserts, as well as with dishes cooked on charcoal.Old Rasputin by North Coast BrewingABV: 9%IBU: 75Notes: Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. In a successful year, an acre of good hops could be more profitable than fifty acres of arable land, but some farmers would not grow hops due to the erratic yields caused by drought, wet periods and mildew. Duty was imposed in 1710 and the Act prohibited the use of any bettering agent other than hops in beer, as hops were far more wholesome. The duty varied from year to year and speculation on the tax became a popular form of betting.Randall HistoryThis invention is credited to Sam Calagione and the team at DFH Circa 2004It was originally created to beat the Pacific brewers in the Lupulin Slam event.Click here to watch DogFish Head's amazing 2 minute 'infomercial' on their Randall JrClick here to buy a Randall Jr right from DogFish HeadNext EpisodeOur last episode before Christmas and our last episode before 2020! It was her first #brewday. A great combo of 3lbs of Passion Fruit puree and 15 Habanero peppers. Half the peppers added during the last 15 minutes of the boil and the rest during the secondary. The addition of Citra, Nugget and Ekuanot hops during the boil and some dry hopping. Which added some great bittering and aroma to this batch of homebrew. Has a nice pepper nose up front. Warning you that trouble is just around the cornerHarrison recalls meeting Tom Miklenovic at a party and seeing 'jugs of beer' while falling in love with the process of Home Brewing.Jon remembers some Canadian Home Brewers sharing beers out of un-marked bottles at a football game.SportsJon talks about his first beer after football practice, and how beers and sports became such an important part of being a Bills fan. S2 Ep 59Drinking Socially - S2 Ep. 8: Oktoberfest & 5 Beers!
Seven Cities Tour UpdateGreg (Twitter/Untappd), is nearly done with the Untappd Seven City Tour. The event locations have been trending on Untappd for each of the parties so far with only the final event at Cerebral Brewing coming up on October 1st. Follow along on the adventure via Untappd’s social media channels (Twitter / Instagram / Facebook) or here. What We’re DrinkingBeer #1 - Oktoberfest by Boston Beer CompanyMärzen5.3% ABVWe begin here as it's the most checked-in Oktoberfest beer on Untappd. Widely available in the US, and really good!Beer #2 - Copper Legend by Jack's Abby Craft LagersFestbier5.7% ABVThis beer has been on Harrison's wishlist and rightfully so! Jacks Abby began as a family-owned brewery focusing on craft lagers. This is a great example of the style, and instantly let us know that our 5 Oktoberfest beers were going to be noticeably different!Beer #3 - Oktoberfest - by Sierra Nevada Brewing a collaboration with Bitburger BraugruppeMärzen6% ABVThis collaborative effort has been happening since 2015 and we felt this would be the perfect beer to transition from the US, to Germany. Each year, Sierra Nevada works with a German brewery to create a new and unique Oktoberfest beer. This is the 2nd most checked in Oktoberfest beer on Untappd this year, and the first time that yeast from Bitburger has left the brewery!Beer #4 - Oktober Fest-Märzen by Ayinger PrivatbrauereiMärzen5.8% ABVOur first proper German Oktoberfest beer was picked based on Untappd Check-in volume and excitement. This one had been logged by most of our own Untappd friends and we were eager to look for differences in the American versions and the German originals!Beer #5 - Oktoberfest Märzen by Hacker-PschorrMärzen5.8% ABVThe final beer in our trip through Oktoberfest. We're hoping that the reviews aren't starting to get non-sensical at this point. This beer, and experiment proved that 5 beers of nearly the same style and ABV can all taste remarkably different. This beer was nothing like the previous 4.SponsorShow off your love of Untappd. Check out our online store and pick up Untappd branded glassware, shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and more!
