The Northern Cape department of education has revealed that an average of 900 learners aged between 10 and 19 years old, fall pregnant each quarter. Majority of the pregnancies happen in the rural district of John Taolo Gaetsewe in Kuruman. The department says this is a concern as it affects learning and teaching. Meanwhile, the World Health Organisations says South Africa has one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy globally, with nearly one in four girls falling pregnant before turning 20 years old. Local data by Statistics South Africa shows that over 90-thousand girls aged ten to 19 years gave birth from March 2021 to April 2022 in all nine provinces. The report further revealed that of the almost 34-thousand teenage pregnancies during 2020, 660 of those were girls under the age of 13 years. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to CEO of LoveLife, Patrick Kulati.
