The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy says it is currently too risky to dispatch a search team to ventilation Shaft 5 at the Virginia mine in Welkom, following information that 31 alleged illegal Basotho miners died at the shaft. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations of the Kingdom of Lesotho has informed the South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy that the incident took place on 18 May 2023 in a shaft that was last operational in the 1990s.
