SOS Coalition calls for SABC to adopt mixed funding model with donations, sponsorships, advertising and money coming from the fiscus
The SOS Coalition - a broadcasting network that campaigns for democratic media and broadcasting - has sounded the alarm on the proposed SABC draft Bill recently signed by Cabinet. The Bill is set to be tabled in front of parliament's relevant portfolio committee before the public can give input on it. Amongst the Bill's proposals is for the SABC to establish a subsidiary commercial company that will have its own board. The draft bill also proposes that the Communications Minister - in consultation with the corporation - may regulate television licenses in order to generate money for the Public Broadcaster. South Africa to get a new National Policing Policy
The Civilian Secretariat for Police Service has begun its work in developing a new National Policing Policy for the country, as per the instruction of Police Minister Bheki Cele. The Secretariat says the National Policing Policy will feed into the South African Police Service Amendment Act, which aims to improve Policing across South Africa. Public consultations are currently underway where provinces are making inputs into the Policy. President Cyril Ramaphosa is today expected to officially launch the Border Management Authority in Musina, Limpopo. Former police investigator, Greg Kading says the rapper, Tupac Shakur's killer talked himself to jail. Kading was reacting to the arrest of Duane "Keefe D" Davis, the man charged with Shakur's murder nearly three decades after the incident. The hip-hop legend was shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996. Davis, a former L.A Crips gang leader was indicted by a grand jury in Nevada last week for his involvement in the case. The main labor union at South Africa's state power utility Eskom, the National Union of Mine Workers, has called for the suspension of a R163 billion ($8.5 billion) climate finance pact. Under the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), South Africa agreed to begin moving away from generating electricity from coal to producing more renewable energy. The department of Basic Education says more than three-thousand schools across the country have reported unusual behaviour amongst pupils. This includes learners screaming uncontrollably and other strange behaviour. The department has since taken it upon itself to launch a survey to probe such strange behaviours. Judicial Service Commission interviews underway to fill 20 positions
The October leg of the Judicial Service Commission interviews commences today. There are twenty judicial vacancies which include four vacancies at the Supreme Court of Appeals. According to the Judiciary Newsletter, out of the 21 judicial appointments made by the President on the recommendations of the Judicial Service Commission, 11 were women, including Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya.
