The novel coronavirus mutation can be used as a “molecular clock” to track the virus through time and geography. University College London Genetics Institute researchers checked SARs-CoV-2's viral sequences, and they found out that the coronavirus started infecting people at the end of 2019, not months before it was formally identified.
