Deputy Elizabeth Stacey of Dorchester County, Maryland, is suing Sheriff James Phillips Junior for alleged disability and sex discrimination, as well as retaliation. Stacey, who joined the sheriffs office in 2017, suffered a knee injury during a foot chase in 2023. Despite her injury, she claims the department denied her necessary therapy, a brace, medication, and surgery. After going on medical leave in October 2023, Stacey alleges that the sheriff pressured her to return to work, even on light duty. While on light duty, Stacey faced unequal rules compared to injured male deputies and was subjected to mockery and stress. In June 2025, she applied for a K-nine spot but was denied in favor of a rookie. The sheriff then reassigned her to courthouse duty, reducing her hours and overtime. Stacey filed an EEOC complaint in October 2024 and is now seeking a jury trial, with damages exceeding $450,000.
