Josh's Theory of Radicalization

I recently spoke with documentary filmmaker and host of Channel 5, Andrew Callaghan on Doomscroll #19. In the episode, we discuss “Andrew’s Theory of Radicalization” which he outlines in the introduction of his new film Dear Kelly (2025). Briefly summarized, Callaghan argues that political radicalization occurs when individuals lose access to three core needs:

Security — material safety such as the home and other necessary goods for survival like food and energy

Significance — the ability to participate in meaningful work that gives us a sense of purpose in society at large

Connection — strong social bonds that create a sense of belonging such as family or in-person community ties

During our conversation, I mention my own theory of radicalization that I will describe in more detail in today’s newsletter. If you value these discussions and want to support this project, you can become a paid subscriber and get access to all bonus episodes of Doomscroll, My Political Journey and more:

Support the show!

Radical Content

In recent years, media coverage has focused on the unintended consequences of algorithmic recommendation and ignored the socioeconomic drivers that cause people to seek out political content online. Radical messaging has existed across all eras and forms of media but it relies on real political crises to find a receptive audience.

Radicalization is often described through the metaphor of a funnel — an informal network of diffuse messaging that is spread out over time and across channels. Viewers will often begin at large mainstream programs and, over the course of several years, move through successive channels as they descend into more isolated or extreme views. As they dive deeper into radical content, the broad reach of this messaging is refined into a more niche ideological worldview that primes viewers for political action and recruitment.

The metaphor of ‘the funnel’ draws on two key sources. Primarily, it refers to marketing diagrams that measure the reach of advertising media, click through rates and eventual sales. These comparisons of reach and conversion rates help to measure the effectiveness of a certain campaign, slogan or idea. In the advertising industry this ratio is commonly referred to as “eyes to buys”. Secondly, the metaphor of the funnel is borrowed from the field of counter-terrorism, in which researchers attempted to map and generate predictive models for radical Islamic attacks during the Global War on Terror. In these studies, researchers would measure the reach of radical media from extremist groups and attempt to narrow down what portion of that audience was a risk for committing real world violence. In the example of extreme political groups broadcasting over YouTube or other platforms, this dual application of the funnel became a useful and largely accurate way to describe the phenomena of online extremism.

One notable study in this field is Alternative Influence, authored by Becca Lewis and published by Data & Society in 2018. Lewis maps the process of online far right radicalization on YouTube. These familiar content pathways became known as “pipelines” in popular media and commentary.

Funnels and pipelines form the basis of our analysis for online politicization. Funnels refer to the broad reach of media messaging. Pipelines describe the most common pathways through these networks. In the past few years, much of my work has been an exploration into these phenomena and a proposal for how these processes could be utilized toward more progressive ends.

At the top of the funnel one can find popular channels with varied content and low conversion rates. Going further “down the rabbit hole” means encountering more niche or politically radical content; overall view numbers go down but conversion rates go up. As viewers descend into the deepest levels, they can discover more extreme views. Radicalization is a process of clarifying ideological inconsistencies and it requires that viewers are slowly acculturated to extreme ideas over time.

Importantly, these funnel and pipeline analogies suggest that belief systems are always in motion. In an era of h

He started exploring this many months ago, and quite frankly, I had no idea what he was working on. I was amazed when he came back with an entirely new perspective on the Gateway saga and Monroe's connection to the military. Although it’s just a theory, I personally love the idea of these guys convincing the government to fund their own spiritual research. [PREVIEW] Doomscroll 15.5: Quinn Slobodian

My guest is Quinn Slobodian. We discuss the crisis of the 1970s and the 2020s. Of all the open theoretical debates, these periods are by far the most consequential. The analysis we take away from these periods will help determine whether neoliberalism was a project of class war (something that can be reversed) or an inevitable development within capitalism (a persistent feature that cannot be changed). The primary obstacle to any New Deal program, green or otherwise, will be to resolve these debates and bring an end to decades of unnecessary austerity.

Doomscroll 15: Quinn Slobodian

My guest is Quinn Slobodian, a professor of international history at Boston University. He is the author of "Globalists: The End of Empire and the Birth of Neoliberalism". Neoliberalism is the most misused word in today's political discourse. In this episode we discuss the origins of the ideological movement. What is neoliberalism? When did it begin? How did it transform global politics?

Against Platforms w/ Mike Pepi

Mike Pepi is the author of “Against Platforms”, a bold critique of the hidden costs of digital life – and a manifesto for a better future. He is also one of my best friends and someone I have been in conversation with for over a decade.

In this episode, we discuss our shared history in working to develop a new institutionalist critique of emerging technologies and platforms. The vast expansion of platforms during the 2010’s, which now encompass nearly all aspects of social life, represented a blindspot for the political left. To understand how this happened, we need to retrace the history of the 60’s counter-culture and the embrace of libertarian philosophies amongst the New Left.

Since 2011, Mike Pepi, Brad Troemel, myself and other artists and writers have been engaged in an on-going dialogue that explores the ideological roots and design of platform technologies. Mike writes:

“We have been taught that digital technologies are neutral tools, transparent, easily understood, and here to serve us. The reality, is that they are laden with assumptions and collateral consequences – ideology, in other words. And it is this hidden ideology that must be dismantled if we are to harness technology for the fullest expression of our humanity.”

Get the book:
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/761644/against-platforms-by-mike-pepi/

[PREVIEW] Are We Seeing a Political Realignment?

These are confusing times. Familiar divisions between left and right fail to map onto today’s political landscape. The culture war has absorbed all aspects of media. Elon Musk is setting world records in Diablo IV (completing Pit level 150 in 1 minute, 56 seconds!) and soon he promises to speed clear the United States discretionary budget with DoGE (the Department of Government Efficiency).

We’re living through an important social transformation. In the 2024 election, we saw historic margins of the working class vote for a party that has traditionally represented the interests of capital. To understand the process that is now taking place, we need to look back and learn exactly how we got here.

During the 1970’s, advanced economies in the western world experienced a period of stagflation. Stagflation is an economic phenomena where stagnant wages occur alongside inflation. Amidst this crisis, the capitalist class seized an opportunity to remake political common sense among elites.

Under the post-war Keynesian consensus, the predominant economic theory of the era, originating from the British economist and philosopher John Maynard Keynes, an anomaly like stagflation was considered to be impossible. The observable reality of the 1970’s lent credibility to a previously minority opinion among economists; a political theory called neoliberalism. Emanating from the Chicago school, elites of the era concluded that the Keynesian model must be theoretically flawed. Neoliberals presented a bold and compelling vision to restore growth and set the economy back on track.

The late 1970’s marked a break in the post-war compact between labor and capital, the tacit arrangement following World War II where businesses compromised with labor unions in exchange for stability and economic growth. In 1980, we saw the overwhelmingly popular elections of Ronald Reagan in the US and Margaret Thatcher in the UK. At home, Paul Volker, chairman of the Federal Reserve, increased interest rates to a unprecedented 20%. Volker chose to tighten the money supply to fit within the theoretical models proposed by neoliberal ideologue Frederich Hayek (as far back as the 1930’s). For a brief period, profitability was restored and capitalism could continue.

Importantly, the dawn of neoliberalism represented a period of unity and solidarity among the capitalist class. In this moment, the economic interests of the ruling class aligned. In the words of David Harvey, author of A Brief History of Neoliberalism (2007), this was “class war from above”.

Today, politics appears strange because the interests of the capitalist class have become fractured. Republicans and Democrats now represent different aspects of the ruling class. Broadly, Republicans represent the interests of manufacturing, while Democrats represent the interests of finance. Certain economic activities, like selling physical goods and speculating on markets, will often have divergent goals and conflict with one another.

This intense competition for profits, between finance-capital and productive-capital, represents the basic structure of today’s political opposition. Blue-aligned interests seek to globalize investment in order to extract greater profits from developing markets. Red-aligned interests fight to keep capital investments at home where they can access a slice of the shrinking pie. Both groups compete for legislation and preferential treatment from the state. Neither group represents the interests of workers and we now find ourselves in an historically significant split.

The results of the 2024 election are not just a product of today’s culture war. The economic interests of some, admittedly few, workers now align more closely with the Republican party. This fracturing of the interests of the capitalist class is currently transforming our social values and political landscape. These developments help to explain the rise of cultural and economic nationalism across the advanced world. How might this crisis resolve?

Thomas Pikkety, author of Capital in the Twenty-First Century (2013), notes that the rate of return on capital, i.e. lending and financial speculation, now exceeds the rate of economic growth, i.e. the value of goods produced. While these economic sectors are always in competition, there is an inherent instability to financial speculation.

As far back as 1894, in chapter 25: “Credit and Fictitious Capital” of Capital: Volume III (yes, we are really abo

[PREVIEW] Deep Research: Tartaria

Otherworld presents Deep Research. This week, we’re covering “Tartaria”. Tartaria is a conspiracy theory that suggests the existence of a vast, advanced civilization that supposedly existed in ancient times but has been intentionally erased from historical records. Proponents of this theory often claim that Tartaria was a highly developed and technologically advanced empire with a global influence, surpassing the conventional understanding of history. They argue that evidence of Tartaria's existence is hidden or manipulated by a secretive global elite. The conspiracy theory often incorporates a variety of historical events, architectural anomalies, and symbols to support its narrative.

Research links:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Tartaria/comments/wggxfa/itsmorganfr_on_tiktok_explaining_tartaria/

https://www.cia.gov/readingroom/document/cia-rdp78-02771r000200090002-6

https://www.youtube.com/@jonlevichannel

https://www.youtube.com/@MindUnveiled

https://www.reddit.com/r/tartarianarchitecture/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Tartaria/

https://www.tiktok.com/@watch_the_rabbit_hole/video/7197053113310661890?lang=en

https://www.tiktok.com/@auntytateana2/video/7161746777069145350?lang=en

https://youtu.be/4N-GDmlDMts?si=LH4ot7FLSsgzdd3Y

https://www.tiktok.com/@zacharydenman/video/7193705054363258117?lang=en

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2021-04-27/inside-architecture-s-wildest-conspiracy-theory

https://youtu.be/dtU_M0Sjd9Y?si=LOds3f6Nj-KXktMQ&t=332

Follow:

https://www.instagram.com/otherworldpod/?hl=en
https://www.patreon.com/Otherworld
