Ep 23023: Rener Gracie - Harnessing the 32 Principles of Jiu-Jitsu to Succeed in Business, Relationships, and Life

I recently got an opportunity to interview Rener Gracie – a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, coach, author and entrepreneur. If you’re unfamiliar with the Gracie family, they are widely regarded as one of the most accomplished family dynasties in martial arts history. Ok, so what does Jiu-Jitsu have to do with financial advising? Well, for starters, BJJ is a complex sport with thousands of techniques and moves. Not only can learning the moves be challenging, but knowing which ones to use and when to use them, can get overwhelming quickly. As Rener says, “the right move at the wrong time, is the wrong move.” I see a lot of parallels with financial services. As an advisor, you need to be able to ditch the financial jargon and simplify the information in a way that’s easy for your clients to understand. You also have to be able to guide your clients on which tools and strategies to use depending on their specific situation. What’s also interesting about Rener is that he’s been able to scale his BJJ schools across the country AND he’s mastered the art of creating online content to help feed that growth. So, when it comes to building an online community and attracting your ideal audience, Rener’s got a lot of wisdom to share!  3 of the biggest insights from Rener Gracie …  How Rener grew his YouTube channel, The Gracie Breakdown, to 870k subscribers and 196 million views – and how he leveraged his channel to build an online community of 380k paying students.   3 Jiu-Jitsu principles that you can use to motivate others, resolve conflict, and overcome big obstacles in both your business and life.   The viral video content strategy Financial Advisors can use to turn their “black-belt” knowledge into simple to understand content that attracts their ideal clients and grows their online presence.JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWTo become a DBDL Insider and get VIP access to free resources and exclusive content, text "DBDL" to 785-800-3235. *Message and data rates may apply. A separate company was backed by Mark Cuban and later acquired when he was only 21 years old. After a successful exit, he went on to start and scale multiple businesses. So, a lot to learn here on growing a team and getting the right people on the bus. 3 of the biggest insights from Anthony Zhang … Why wine investing not only delivers delight, but also minimizes taxes and offers consistent returns that have outpaced the stock market. The values-first hiring process that allowed Anthony to scale Vinovest into a lean 20-person company that manages 9-figures in assets. How Anthony turned adversity into abundance and gratitude after an accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWTo become a DBDL Insider and get VIP access to free resources and exclusive content, text "DBDL" to 785-800-3235. *Message and data rates may apply. Ep 18018: John Ruhlin - The Art & Science of Radical Generosity and Relationship Building

Raise your hand if you’ve ever sent or received a corporate gift? It’s pretty common practice in our industry to receive branded swag as a “thank you for doing business with us.”The problem is, most of the time, it’s meaningless junk. I don’t know about you, but a key chain or mug with a big company logo on it, doesn’t really make me feel appreciated. While sending gifts like this is a well-intentioned act, it’s actually doing you and your business more harm than good.If this has been your approach to loving on your clients, team, and the people in your life who matter most, I’m here to tell you that you’re doing it wrong. And btw, I’m not here to judge… I’m totally guilty of giving gifts like this too!It was only after meeting today’s guest, John Ruhlin, that I started honing my skills in the art of gift giving. If you’re unfamiliar, John is a Gifting Expert and author of Giftology, a methodology that’s been used by some of the largest companies and pro sports teams in the world. In this episode, he’s going to share how you can use his system to cut through the noise, increase referrals, and strengthen relationships with the people who matter the most.If you want to win the hearts and minds of influential people, attract your ideal clients, and enjoy the benefits of a growing business and meaningful relationships, both personally and professionally, this episode is for you! 3 of the biggest insights from John Ruhlin … Why price tags have nothing to do with effective gift-giving — and how to craft a personalized gift that will move your relationships forward and leave a presence in your absence for years to come. Could sending golf balls and polos have a negative effect on developing relationships with key prospects? Learn why company-branded items can reduce your status in the eyes of the recipient — and what to send instead. Statistically, only 10%-20% of widows stick with their financial advisor after a spouse passes away. The data illustrates a key point — doing business with someone means doing business with their inner circle, too. But how should that technology be implemented? To answer that question, I’m sitting down with my longtime friend Corey Westphal, the founder and CEO of Mobile Assistant, a dictation service that helps advisors document meeting notes and information quickly, easily and safely. On average, people speak about 7 times faster than they talk. By dictating notes from seminars and meetings, advisors can save themselves hours each week. And while dictation software has been around for some time, Corey shares some modern advancements that have supercharged the technology.Corey and I also spend some time diving into how templates — both in technology and business — can help scale your practice. You’ll also hear us chat about ways to build a top-tier company culture, how to avoid critical mistakes when scaling, and how resilience is an unshakeable route to success. 3 of the biggest insights from Corey Westphal …Customer data is quickly becoming a goldmine asset for financial advisors. Advisors who adopt enhanced technology can create opportunities for more targeted financial advice and better client experiences. Actionable advice for building a culture that attracts world-class talent to your team — and strategies for leading and developing that talent once it’s on board. Growing pains are inevitable for advisors who scale their practice. Ep 4004: Triad Member - Generating $250M of New Assets in a Single Year with Matthew Peck, Derek Gregoire, and Keith Ellis

Once per month, we’re going to release a special episode with one of our Triad members that highlights their story and shares the lessons learned from building and scaling an advisory practice.  My goal is to have genuine conversations that dig into the good, the bad, and the ugly so that we can help as many other offices out there who are listening in. This week, I’m talking with the co-founders of SHP Financial: Matthew Peck, Derek Gregoire, and Keith Ellis. Last year alone, their team brought in $250M of new assets—one-third of which came from client referrals. And the best part? They’ve avoided falling into the trap of “more growth = more work.”  Today, we will deconstruct how they went from being the only 3 revenue producers in the firm, carrying the weight of everything on their shoulders, to building and scaling a team that freed up their time and allowed them to create ultimate freedom in their business and life.  3 of the biggest insights from this episode … #1 The power of a proprietary process—and how SHP used one to create better solutions for their clients, differentiate themselves from their competition, and build a business that’s exploded in growth.  #2 Why growing your business does not have to come at the cost of your time and freedom.  #3 What it takes to build a revolving door of client referrals. Ep 3003: Michael Hyatt - Mind Your Mindset

Do you trust the voice in your head?  Our minds are powerful storytellers, but the stories our minds feed us as facts aren't always accurate. In fact, neuroscience research has shown that, on average, about 20% of our memories are false. And even crazier, up to 70% are distorted in some way.  Unfortunately, these stories can turn into false beliefs that keep you from reaching your true potential.  Do any of these stories sound familiar? "If I don't do it, it won't get done properly." "I could never land a client like that." "I'm not good at sales." "I work a lot, but I'm doing it for my family." As an advisor, this type of thinking has a major impact on how you build your business and life.  But what if you could reprogram your brain to tell a new, empowering story? Today, I'm talking to Michael Hyatt, the founder and chairman of Full Focus. He has scaled multiple companies over the years, including a $250M publishing company with 700+ employees and his own business coaching company that has grown over 60% year-over-year for the past four years.  In this episode, we're talking all about his new book, Mind Your Mindset—and how Advisors can use the principles from the book to unlock their full potential and build a company and life that they love. 3 of the biggest insights from Michael Hyatt … #1 The psychology behind how your mind processes information and creates false beliefs that are holding you and your team back.  #2: The biggest question to ask yourself is to become conscious of your biased thinking.#3 Michael's 3-step framework for rewiring your brain for empowered thinking—identifying the story, interrogating the story, and imagining a better story.  JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWTo become a DBDL Insider and get VIP access to free resources and exclusive content, text "DBDL" to 785-800-3235. *Message and data rates may apply. But if that’s your only game plan, not only will your progression hit a ceiling, but burnout is inevitable.  Today, I’m sitting down with Shawn Sparks of Triad Partners, to talk about what it means to truly succeed as a financial advisor.  Think about it this way… If your numbers are on the rise, but your family is eating dinner without you most nights, is that really how you’d define success? In this episode, Shawn shares a much better approach to building a business; one that gives financial advisors unlimited growth, freedom, and joy. Do Life.” approach. You’ll hear how we’re uniquely positioning ourselves at Triad to serve advisors at the highest level, why freedom doesn’t have to come at the cost of growth, and what it takes to scale without becoming a victim of your own success. 3 of the biggest insights from Shawn … #1 Learn the sustainable approach to scaling your business as a financial advisor, and why focusing on productivity alone is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. #2 The 5 pillars to scale [Vision, Marketing, Sales, Operations, Culture] and why there’s no limit to what you can accomplish when they all work together.  #3 Realizing there are actually 3 different “types” of advisors required to create an unbeatable client experience, attract more referrals, and eliminate the limiting belief that you have to carry all of the weight of running a business on your own. JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWTo become a DBDL Insider and get VIP access to free resources and exclusive content, text "DBDL" to 785-800-3235. *Message and data rates may apply. Ep 1001: Why I Quit My Job... The Story Behind "Do Business. Do Life." with Brad Johnson

"No man ever steps in the same river twice—for it's not the same river, and he's not the same man." – Heraclitus I love that quote (for many reasons), but now more than ever, it holds particular significance in my life.   For one, I left a 13-year career with Advisors Excel to go out on my own. It was one of the most challenging decisions of my life.  And while I'm beyond grateful for everything that role opened up for me, I realized that I had hit the ceiling in my growth and knew it was time for a new challenge.  Triad Partners was born! And I can tell you, I'm not the same person I was two years ago.  Our team set out to flip an antiquated industry on its head, which is exactly what we're doing.  Far too often, I've seen advisors sacrifice their marriages, health, relationships, and everything else that matters to walk across an industry stage recognizing their "success." That model is broken, and we're on a mission to fix it.   Not only do we partner with the top 1% of independent financial advisors, but we help them create unlimited growth and freedom in both their business AND life.  At Triad Partners, we call this #DBDL or "Doing Business. Doing Life."  That brings me to the second reason that quote rings true. This is episode one of the new podcast, "Do Business. Do Life.", appropriately named after everything Triad Partners stands for. It's an evolution of my original podcast, which many advisors grew to love.  This podcast is my attempt to help growth-minded financial advisors reimagine what's possible. So, if you want to build your business faster than ever while also living life on your terms, hit subscribe, and get ready to level up!   JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWTo become a DBDL Insider and get VIP access to free resources and exclusive content, text "DBDL" to 785-800-3235. *Message and data rates may apply.
