This is my rave tape! A retrospective look into my UK rave culture roots. I remember vividly when I heard my first ever rave tape. It was 1992 & my friend gave me the cassette to play in my walkman after school. When I put it on my whole world changed. I'd never heard anything like it before & instantly was hooked. That tape was DJ Seduction & Jumping Jack Frost at Perception Wonderland July '92. It's still one of my favourites. My school friends & I used to collect all the rave tape packs when they came out, getting the bus to Swindon & going to the 'rave shop' as we called it. At this time we weren't old enough to go to the actual parties. Our favourites were from the Universe parties which were happening quite closer to where I grew up in Wiltshire. We had others from Dreamscape, Fantasia, Obsession, Amnesia House & Helter Skelter. The walls of my bedroom were covered in rave flyer. I’d often drift off to sleep & dream about going to some of them. When I got a bit older, but probably not old enough, I was able to go to the parties myself. I used to regularly go to Devotion at Golddiggers, Fusion in Bath, The Brunel Rooms where D.I.Y hosted a room, Helter Skelter at The Sanctuary, United Dance, Slammin' Vinyl & free parties like Spiral Tribe. These were some of the best days & had a huge influence on my musical taste & style. I'd always say to myself 'one day that will be me on the decks up there'. My first ever gig was at a club called The Depot in Bristol which hosted a night called Death Row Techno. At the time I was playing what we'd now call jungle techno. It was a little before UK rave music split into happy hardcore & jungle/DnB. The night I played was a rave (I can’t remember the name of the event) that had Bristol’s own jungle legend Ronnie Size & one of the scenes best hardcore DJs Brisk playing. So you could say that rave is in my blood. For years I've been saying I'm going to make my own rave tape. A collection of all the tunes that, when I hear them, I can recall exactly where I was, who I was with & where we were in the crowd. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do! My Free Downloads Mix. Over the years I’ve given away lots & lots of free tune downloads. I think it’s prob about 100 in total! It dawned on me one day that it would be pretty cool to put together a mix featuring a load of my favourites from over the years. From my first ever freebie, the re-edit of The Prodigy ‘Narayan’ from back in 2008 which was a bit of a killer, dance floor filling, secret weapon in the Break da House days. To the latest, a great new version of the iconic Bruce Hornsby tune ‘The Way It Is’ that I used to listen to on cassette over & over again when I was a little kid back in the 80's. There’s a bunch of other great ones that didn’t make the mix like my whole Ghetto Funk EP from 2013, my NWA ‘Straight Outa Compton’ remix that’s one of my most ever played on Soundcloud & loads from the That’s Not An Edit series that I’ve done 13 freebies for now. I tried to include the full spectrum of genres I’ve been making over the years. Starting off funky into nu disco. Then from a bit of mid tempo bass into house & breaks. Forward by D-Funk: For the 2nd part of my D-Funk 25 mix series I’ve focused on the best, most important or my favourite tracks I’ve made or had a hand in making. Some are originals. Some remixes. Some are edits, bootys or whatever we’re calling them nowadays. It’s a real mix from across the years including my 1st release ‘Transitions’ on Barry Ashworth & Carl Loben’s Westway Records. Right up to my latest, a free download that will drop shortly after the mix goes live. It’s a mix of varying genres. For ages I’ve been known as ‘Europe D-Funk’ that plays funky breaks but, as you’ll see from this mix, my funk focused music covered all styles from hip hop to house, disco to breaks & electro. But don’t worry, I’ve included some of the mid-tempo music that got me really known on an international scale, how could I not! Some of the music on this mix has been released on my own labels Upstart Music, the breaks based label I started in 2008 & Grits N Gravy, the funk based label I started with Philly Blunt in 2010. There are also tunes on labels such as Sunday Best, ‘I’m In Love’ the 1st of my 3 remixes I’ve done for the Dub Pistols. The often overlooked, but I think my best mid-tempo tune ‘Bigger Than Baseline’ on Adapted Records. I’ve closed the mix with a recent, original hip hop song ‘Cruise Control’ that my longtime studio partner & good friend Mr Doris. There’s also music from the great series That’s Not An Edit, a track from the now deceased Rump Shakers Records & a rare release from Cakes at The World Bar, a Sydney institution that I was resident at for 8 years. I started making music seriously in 2006 when I met & formed a friendship with Barry Ashworth from the band Dub Pistols. He both inspired & guided me to my first few releases. I’m ever grateful for his words of encouragement & enthusiasm. From starting on a knock off copy of Reason on an old PC in the corner of the spare bedroom to now having a fully working dedicated studio, I can honestly say it’s been a wild ride of ups & downs. I guess music mirrors life that way. Even though I started producing & releasing music a while after I started DJing in 1995 on belt drive decks in my bedroom in Wiltshire (UK), I’ve now gone on to release over 200 tracks on over 30 different labels.
