But David hasn't disappeared from the light or retreated, when it might seem like an entirely understandable reaction. He's gained power and confidence through the strong friendships and relationships he made in his film career, and this has fueled his evolution in no small part, into where he currently finds himself. This is an awesome conversation with someone whose outlook will inspire and delight, and as David himself says, he is "handi-capable, not handicapped". Of course, there are moments of trauma that he wll live with, and these reveal themselves in the conversation, so perhaps take note going in... Included in that busy-ness though is how he drew attention to a PPE issue in the healthcare system, which in turn brough on its own worries, gaslighting, doublespeak, intimidation and just plain strangeness - it was a rough time but a period which ultimately led to some hugely important changes along the way. Twitch is the livestreaming platform for people to either observe or take part in art, sports, gaming, music, every conceivable activity that can be filmed essentially. Within appropriate broadcast law, obvs. Gaming happens to be Balmer's chosen discipline (with some improv and role play in there too), and as one of Pip's favourite streamers there must be a reason for him to guest on DPP right? Correct. Balmer is not only a truly unique gamer with a wild and memorable presence, he is also a parent of an autistic son. He and Pip catch up on everything involved with that part of the story, which is fascinating and inspiring, shedding light on the 'system' as we know it, and how it works with and against this area of neurodivergence. While the episode does deal with parenting and Twitch, those who are not parents nor Twitch afficionados may be confident in knowing it's a lovely episode with warmth and awesomeness throughout. Florence and Reed have been making power moves in the world of sex work, including being active within it, fighting for rights and equality, and ensuring that things don't get misrepresented and blurry along the way. As you'll hear, the work they do is not easy by any means. It is a fascinating chat tho, as we hear about their road to podcasting, how to navigate relationships as podcasters and sex workers, the difference between attraction and appreciation (and how they may blend), having a tangible item out in the world (a book) vs making invisible art (podcasts), and a huge amount of other goodness along the way. Nothing too graphic here but perhaps if you're playing in the presence of younger folk, it could be worth being around for occasional explanations!
