Ep 665ONE DRINK w/ Kae, Polar & Musa • a flashback to 2011 in 3 movements #665
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week we have a rare throwback recording to 2011 (pre-Distraction Pieces Podcast) with Pip, Kae Tempest, Musa Okwonga and Polarbear! The Mount Rushmore of spoken word right here folks, captured in a recording Pip uncovered while late-night trawling through the vaults by candlelight. This was originally recorded on camera but there was also a mic in the middle of the room - though as you will hear, it's a bit of a recording sandwich with the slightly more decent recording forming the bread and the slightly more raw camera audio forming the filling. Follow? Nice. It's a really cool chat, incredibly freeform and without defined topics and certainly not recorded with the shape and craft you might expect of late-era Distraction Pieces. But think of it as the 'Distraction Pieces Basement Tapes' - a lively chat of varying audio quality which functions nicely as a time capsule. It's also uncanny hearing about predictions for the following decade - eerie how much has been manifested since... The audio has been cleaned up a touch but sometimes with this kind of sound, things can get worse the more you try and scoop out of it, so just allow your ears to get familiar with it and you'll be grand. Enjoy - it's like sitting at the table where it happened!PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureKAE TEMPESTMUSA OKWONGAPOLARBEARPIP AT PRINCE CHARLES CINEMA • 9th April!SPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMPIP TWITTERPIP PATREONPIP IMDB Hosted on Acast. FULL FACT.org (independent fact checkers & campaigners) • Friday Rewind
bonusemocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Will & Phoebe of FULL FACT.ORG, originally episode 13 from 2015-01-07.As Pip mentions on the intro, it is quite a weird episode. This is of course not down the awesome guests representing FullFact, but more down to how drastically the media and basic human landscape has changed since the episode was broadcast 11 years ago. We've seen how much can change in a week - so with our perspective over a decade later, it's like stepping back into a very bizarre alternative timeline. What's weird is that the phrase "fake news" was a mere glint in some shady folks eyes, and also that this chat happened 5 years before a pandemic, which was where misinformation truly had its time in the sun. Let alone artificial intelligence. This is some novel-worthy stuff right here. Anyway - without getting too caught up in all of the chaos, FullFact is a VERY important organisation who specialise in neutralising dis/mis-information and set out to fully fact check what gets out there, so listen knowing that you can and should check in on their site regularly. It's not a grift, it's not a hoax, it's an honest place where bullshit goes to die. They can use that if they want (it's good right?). Ep 664ANSON BOON • 'The Good Boy' in cinemas now! (MobLand / Pistol / 1917) #664
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the force of acting posititivity (and good boy) that is ANSON BOON!As stated in the episode title, 'The Good Boy' (aka 'Heel' in the US) is out and about now, in which Anson plays alongside the powerful duo of Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough. Anson is capable of playing characters who aren't necessarily immediately charming, let's say, and some that might require a little work to warm to, but always make for some truly captivating and interesting, memorable performances which inspire conversation, debate and thought. So it goes without saying that this chat is an awesome one as Pip finds out where these choices originate, and traces the source of Anson's acting path. Of course there are so many facets and angles covered too, including basically becoming a fully functioning Sex Pistols tribute band by way of 'Pistol' (in which he was coached by Underworld!), his love of a film set, being a nepo gangster, the School of Kate Winslett, acting alongside Tom Hardy, Helen Mirren, Paddy Considine, Pierce Brosnan and so many more, and just a huge amount of fascinating goodies from his time in front of and nearby the camera. Inspiring and lovely stuff, enjoy!PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureIMDBINSTAGRAMTHE GOOD BOYMOBLANDPISTOLPIP AT PRINCE CHARLES CINEMA • 9th April!SPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMPIP TWITTERPIP PATREONPIP IMDB Hosted on Acast. Today, we catch up with Shaggy, originally episode 528 from 2023-08-23.Original writeup below:Very broadly speaking, a lot of you will know Shaggy as Mr Boombastic, or the guy who did Oh Carolina and It Wasn't Me. But dig a little deeper and there are worlds of releases and shows and all sorts of stories from the past that are just too exciting and interesting to pass up on... And that's what makes this last minute convo with Pip and Shaggy so awesome! It's the stories behind the hits that are amazing, and the historical signifigance of them too. But in that world, of course there will be all kinds of run-ins, collabos, tales and amazing anecdotes, and Shaggy delivers on all counts. So whether you're a full on dancehall reggae appreciator or someone who remembers the name, don't miss this one - it's super entertaining and a fascinating trip from start to end.PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureONLINEINSTAGRAMONE FINE DAY FESTIVAL w/ STINGKENNY DOPE & SHAGGY (Buddy's pick!)OH CAROLINAIT WASN'T MEBOOMBASTICPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast. Ep 663FATIHA EL-GHORRI • 'Cockney Stacking Doll' tour happening now near you! #663
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the proper hilarious and lovely comic and actress FATIHA EL-GHORRI!Consider this your membership to the Fans Of Fatiha club, as after this listen you're officially signed up. Of course a good amount of you will know Fatiha extremely well at this point, having seen her on Taskmaster, Rochard Osman's House Of Games or straight-up standup, but if not, this is a perfect chance to get to know Fatiha. Having been blessing stages for over a decade, Fatiha is well versed in comedy, and has been through all the rites of passage comics have to go through, but also spent a lot of 2025 managing an extreme health crisis on top of all of that. You might consider that a trigger warning if you're sensitive to health issues or perhaps dealing with your own currently - but you can be sure that it's all handled with the strength and humour you could wish for. Just worth pointing it out in case. All in all, ultra affirming stuff and super refreshing to hear Fatiha going in on all things life and comedy. Go see her on tour, what you playing at! JOE CORNISH (The Kid Who Would Be King / Attack The Block / Adam & Joe) • Friday Rewind
emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Joe Cornish, originally episode 253 from 2019-02-15.Original writeup below:Consider this the counterpart to the much earlier Adam Buxton episode, if you will, what with Joe being Adam long term co-conspirator and collaborator! Between them they very much had a hand in those early days of podcasting, which was something of a direct offshoot of radio but with a very creative and premeditated approach, not to mention their amazing TV work… With both of them going their separate ways and moving onto a ton of incredible work between them, it’s been hugely inspiring to see the individual sides of the two, and Joe breaks down his recent work and creative projects including of course, ‘Attack The Block’ and brand new film ‘The Kid Who Would Be King’ (showing by the time you read this)! Hear Joe go in on everything else besides too, including film reactions from kids, violence in modern kids films, how he valued seeing himself in kids films (as a young’un), the “Supermarket Sweep of hell” of an approaching film deadline and its many intangible obstacles, how it’s tough to truly enjoy your own film creations as you know too much about them and his own Super8 films back in the day, made with pals Buxton and Louis Theroux! Ep 661HERO FIENNES TIFFIN & DONAL FINN • Young Sherlock premiers on Prime from March 4! #661
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the fabulous actors HERO FIENNES TIFFIN & DONAL FINN!What with Young Sherlock premiering on Prime TODAY (at time of publishing, that is) - or for those listening later - March 4th, what better pairing than Sherlock Holmes and James Moriarty (and our man Scroobius Pip who also stars in the show!). Guy Ritchie directed it, and it sounded like a very cool and very unique environment to be a part of... We catch Hero and Donal at the very start of the press run, but already they have their off-screen chemistry down to science as they let us all in on the process, which is one that embraces spontaneity while being fully prepared. Along with the blend of loose / tight, we also hear about the musicality of the script which includes meticulous cadence, having room to present ideas and creative input on set, the importance of careful scheduling and also how to portray the Mind Palace. Many have attempted it... What will this iteration look like? Today, we catch up with Lucy Pinder, originally episode 438 from 2022-02-23.Original writeup below:A delightful chat bringing in loads of feelgood action, with a dash of triumph over adversity in there for good measure. From her days back in Winchester, we hear about her path to publicity and being involved in the world of early 00's lad culture and glamour modeling from a chance day off at the beach, which led to a huge amount of ups and downs as the path began to stabilise. What this did lead to though is a ton of good things which we hear about, as well as thoughts on pandemic walks and rituals, reclaiming Sundays and releasing podcasts on them, the difference between fun and selfishness these days to back then, rebranding being single and so much more besides. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the proper acting talent that is JOEL FRY!A delightful chat here with Joel, who we catch mere months into the second child bubble (and is holding up impressively). A quick glimpse at his IMDB will reveal an absolute avalanche of great projects that you're likely to have peeped over the years, though it may even be the case that you're only just discovering him through the latest (at time of publishing) 'Stitch Head' in which he voices 'Creature'. Whatever the case may be, it's a treat to hear the backstage banter about past and present work engagements, including working with Ben Wheatley on 'In The Earth', the move from Devon to Brixton, the science of doing nothing on camera, pandemic hangover life and acting throughout, Yesterday, cinematic universes (whether you believe in them or not!) and so much more of course. Today, we catch up with Taron Egerton, originally episode 350 from 2020-10-21.Original writeup below:As with so many of these episodes featuring the UK acting crew, there is an over-riding spiritual link by way of Stephen Graham, so props must be given to him first off! This one feels like another ‘long time coming’ episode, where it was just a matter of time and arrangements to lock it in. Naturally there’s lockdown talk up top, which is always fascinating as we all want to know how it’s been affecting each other - Taron’s found himself in Wales, which brings us to his upbringing (including Liverpool), and from then on you can expect some good talk on social media, RADA and family whip-rounds for auditions, early days (not THAT long ago!) on Kingsman, lessons learned through each film, voice acting vs acting-acting, Matthew Vaughn, Dexter Fletcher, Tom Hardy, his own filmography (including Eddie The Eagle and Rocketman to name a couple), and tons more. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the Traitors-starring legend JESSIE ROUX!An episode for the books right here! Those of you who love and appreciate the how Traitors will have surely also come to love and appreciate the recent breakout superstar Jessie. Jessie's awesome from the start of course but it's a weirdly rare thing to see and hear folks with a stammer out there in the mainstream media (our very own Pip notwithstanding), so when she comes along and blesses the world with such an aura and pure vibes it is a treat to be celebrated. Naturally - as comes up in the conversation - Jessie is not her stammer, in so much as it is not her identity. So enjoy this brilliant chat which covers so much in her life, upbringing, present day and so much in her personal experience which leads to the person you're listening to in this episode. Playing Camilla on The Crown, writing on Killing Eve, or writing and directing 2020's brilliant Promising Young Woman. Here we catch up with Emerald in promotionland to hear about her new film Saltburn, which we'll see in cinemas around mid-November. Ep 658CORIN HARDY • the horror movie whistle-blower (Whistle / The Nun / Gangs Of London) #658
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by film-maker and director CORIN HARDY!Corin's new film 'Whistle' aptly drops on Friday 13th, which will surely be on the radar of the horror heads among you but if not, it might form part of your forthcoming movie schedule after listening to this one... Corin's served many years in the game, from time spent in set design and then onto stop motion, which led onto over 50 music videos which further led to working in a more cinematic capacity. It's been a hugely creative path, all underpinned by music which also forms a huge link in the chain (as you'll hear from the mutual interest in Operation Ivy and Rancid), and as with all Distraction Pieces the chat reins are loosened and conversation wanders into all sorts of awesome ground. Crucially though - you'll hear a ton about Whistle (without hearing the whistle itself - thankfully? - which is present throughout the chat), and the process of bringing it to the screen. Today, we catch up with Fearne Cotton, originally episode 295 from 2019-10-30.Original writeup below:This is the mirror side of a two podcast deal the two of them struck up, where Pip appeared on her ‘Happy Place’ podcast, so as you’ll witness, the driver is often interchangeable, but it’s all perfect as they get on just grand. Maybe it’s because they were born a month apart and have the same cultural touchstones - WHO KNOWS! Whatever the case, it’s a breeze of a podcast which touches on so much including a sentence which features Hanson and Led Zeppelin in the same breath (in fact I think it could be called an “Mmm Bop-cast” but that’s of no consequence), her intro into different kinds of music, being mates with Sarah Cawood and how she eventually got into gig going through her, Coldplay haters, the power of music shared on a mass scale, cathartic crying sessions, early days of her presenting on TV and growing up in front of the camera, presenting the Disney Club, still being treated as a kid in adult life, the old fashioned kid poop story which serves as a grounding device, how being a cool parent isn’t possible, her book ‘Happy’, losing her sense of self in her 20’s and regaining it later, social media, podcast therapy, changing one’s self in the midst of crisis and her work with CoppaFeel. Ep 657JESS MEGAN • surviving grief, addiction and social media #657
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by model, activist and general whirlwind of greatness JESS MEGAN!A deluxe edition of the podcast this week as Pip catches up with Jess, which as you will bear witness to, is no average catch up. While they worked together on the 'Dark Summer' Speech Development merch shoot back in 2016, which seems like mere months ago, that was an entire decade ago it turns out. And as with life in general, it also turns out that an almost insurmountable itinerary can intervene. In Jess's case, without treading on any of what you're about to hear, there's been an immense amount of grief, varying degrees of addiction, depression, and in case you need any sensitivity warnings, there is frank discussion of suicide - so please know that before you begin this episode.Of course, among the heavier elements of the conversation, a huge amount of light enters - Jess and Pip are lovely people and you're in safe hands, as hopefully you'll feel aware of by now. There's a lovely balance of the fun and the far more serious, including a lot of fascinating chat regarding social media and the like. But importantly, even if this situation doesn't mirror one of your own, there will likely be familiar moments or perhaps some which might be of help for others going through it. However you meet it, you'll emerge at the end in a different spot, and hopefully have found a glorious new friend in the bargain. Today, we catch up with Will Poulter, originally episode 167 from 2017-10-17.Original writeup below:In the midst of his current promo run for Kathryn Bigelow's 'Detroit', Will takes time to sit down with Pip for a long overdue chat covering - as you will have come to expect from the DPP - a crazy large number of bases... From the issues raised in portraying a violently racist policeman in 'Detroit' (and the poignancy of the film itself), a powerful back and forth is triggered with Pip and Will, which is the beauty of films like this and how an open discussion can be had which leads into so much more besides - race, politics, society, it's all here. On top of that, you'll hear his tale from the very early days back in 'School Of Comedy' and how his young foot in the acting world's door gave him the necessary inspiration for a full on career, Will drops some gems from his unique perspective on his experience with acting and his ascent from those younger days right up to 'Son Of Rambow', 'The Maze Runner' and 'The Revenant', the latter of which had him up alongside Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Hardy no less. A rich and diverse filmography right there, which has in many ways freed him from his somewhat reductive nickname of 'that Weird Eyebrow Actor'. Today, we look back at the Defund The Police two-part discussion, originally episode 330 from 2020-06-19.Original writeup below:A very timely and hugely informative one for you this week, as Pip is joined by two guests, one after the other. The first is Alex S. Vitale (professor of sociology at Brooklyn College, US), followed by Dr Adam Elliott-Cooper (University Of Greenwich, humanities and social science department). With everything we’ve seen over the last month in most recent history, one sentiment and statement that’s been gaining traction is “Defund The Police”. On face value and without any further research or intrigue, this could come across in an entirely different way than it is supposed to. Pip did a good amount of digging, and after being passed along to appropriate potential guests, meetings were set up and he arrived at two people who are well versed and well equiped to speak on the issue. In the interest of balance, he speaks to Alex from the US, where the issue is very pertinent and pressing and also has very different implications for society there, and also Adam from the UK, who goes into what this means for the UK and the nuances involved. It’s a complex matter for sure, but along with the accompanying links from Pip to break down what’s been talked about, and a comprehensive conclusion, you’ll hopefully be way more up on the subject than you might have been previously, and have a good understanding on what it means to say ‘defund the police’. Be informed, share, and enjoy.ADAM ELLIOTT on TWITTERADAM ONLINEALEX VITALE on TWITTERALEX ONLINEALEX's ARTICLE in THE GUARDIAN PIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast. BRETT GOLDSTEIN & JON DREVER (Superbob together, and much more in the next decade) • Friday Rewind
bonusemocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Brett Goldstein and Jon Drever, originally episode 62 from 2015-10-07.This is a very early days episode right here, the chasm of time made only wider when you consider the career arcs of those involved in the time intervening... Jon is one of the OGs of production company Grain Media, the home of the wonderful Superbob (made by he and Brett), who has now gone on to focus on producing comedy and has been more solo since 2018 or so. Brett has always been doing comedy / writing / film, and since the huge success of Superbob has gone onto find the combination to the universe by way of Ted Lasso, Shrinking, All Of You, and indeed the (some might say) perfectly edited podcast Films To Be Buried With. Here is a snapshot of - at time of this Rewind - over a decade ago, which is such an interesting position from which to view this point in time. Enjoy, and catch all of their furture work too of course.PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureJON INSTAGRAM (links in bio)GRAIN MEDIABRETT INSTAGRAMFILMS TO BE BURIED WITHALL OF YOUPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast. Ep 654JAMES NELSON-JOYCE • from a chance meeting in a chicken restaurant to a beautiful acting path ahead (A Thousand Blows / This City Is Ours / Black Mirror) #653
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the most excellent actor JAMES NELSON-JOYCE!A delightful session with Pip and James, which will bring you adequately up to speed on all things past and present. A lot of seeds were sewn in a not-far-off Nandos where he bumped into Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters (two names which will create the warming glow you can feel from this episode), and from then on we hear about what followed including playing Stephen's brother in A Thousand Blows, how to play a chemistry read, building the backstory, the internalised shame of holding back the reveal of wanting to be an actor, school monologues, the arts being for everyone, and working as part of an ensemble. Naturally you'll be treated to so much more besides, but all in all you can trust that this one's a great one and your attention towards James's past roles will be rewarded!PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureIMDBA THOUSAND BLOWSTHIS CITY IS OURSBLACK MIRROR: PLAYTHINGINSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMPIP TWITTERPIP PATREONPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast. Ep 653Firstly, Are You Okay? #653
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!A non-Rewind Friday for the early days of 2026 as Pip celebrates some very recent past highlights, and the birthday of a very special boy. 🐶The above does actually kind of sum it all up nicely right there but make sure you check it - a delightful little diversion and a very cool, necessary and apt 'stop to breathe' moment in what could already be a very hectic year. Also shouts to Amelia, Finley, Jessie from The Traitors and probably way more but that's a good amount of shouts for now. Loads of love from all at Distraction Pieces, we shall see you all next week!PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureAMELIA LAVERY (from Twitch stream with Pip Thurs 7th Jan)FFTV w/ Grace NeutralFINLEY 🐶JESSIE from THE TRAITORSSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMPIP TWITTERPIP PATREONPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast. Ep 652FILMS OF THE YEAR 2025 #652
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip takes us on a personal guided tour of not only the frosty badlands of the outside world, but the miracle wonderland that was the year in film of 2025!Pip saw like 500 movies last year, which is a commendable feat by anyone's standard, so to corale them all into a manageable amount is even more of a hardcore labour of love. But one thing Pip does love is film, so this is not labour - this is total joy and appreciation and celebration of cinema right here. You'll hear a complete runthrough of all of those films (okay not quite 500 - and crucially not a review of each one), as well as the all important top list of what made it through and why. It's always a fun time and can sometimes be a cool reminder of stuff we all meant to watch but didn't get round to, so loads can be gained from the outdoors on location film ramble.Your keyword for this episode is: ROMP.Also accepted: CAPER.Enjoy, and have a wonderful new year everyone!
