Still, this episode discusses a lot of Syracuse... and beer. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Syracuse Basketball Podcast: Talking about the Orange's Elijah Hughes
The Syracuse Basketball Podcast signs off on 2019-20 with the inevitable news announced minutes before taping that Elijah Hughes would leave Syracuse for the NBA. In this uncertain coronavirus world, the NBA is on pause and college basketball cancelled Hughes' season instead of it ending on a loss. The abrupt close was somewhat of a fitting ending for a player that arrived at Syracuse unable to play as a transfers as a team starving for offense still scrapped to the NCAA, somehow bowed out in round one a year later with Hughes, Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett, then transitioned into one of the most turbulent season in Syracuse history while Hughes exceeded all expectations. Bobby Manning looked back at Hughes' Syracuse career with Matthew Gutierrez and James Szuba, detailing the five things that stuck out about of the program's great players. Hughes doesn't leave alone. As a surge in transfers strikes college basketball, Jim Boeheim will lose more players than he ever has before. Is that an indictment on the program or a larger college trend falling especially hard on Syracuse? We also discussed how much the world has drastically changed in the week or so since we last recorded and how the sports world changes without games. Thanks for following Bobby and James all season. Even though we didn't expect it to end the way it did, it didn't lack intrigue and Hughes was a massive reason why. Best of luck to him at the next level, and what do you expect the Orange to look like without him next season? 0:00-15:00 Elijah Hughes leaps to the NBA, officially 15:00-19:10 Brycen Goodine out the door too 19:10-29:15 How to weigh Syracuse transfers vs. wider NCAA trend? 29:15-34:45 The week college basketball got cancelled 34:45-41:50 The eeriness of life without sports during coronavirus 41:50-47:15 Impact of coronavirus on Syracuse 47:15-51:00 Final memories from 2019-20 Syracuse season Learn more about your ad choices. Syracuse Basketball Podcast: Orange vs. Louisville ACC Tournament preview
Syracuse played North Carolina as coronavirus concerns finally started really impacting U.S. sports. Early in the day, the NCAA declared that fans would not be in attendance of the upcoming tournament. Elsewhere, the NBA rapidly planned to go forward without fans until Rudy Gobert got diagnosed with coronavirus shortly after Syracuse took the court, triggering the NBA's suspension of the season. Even after Syracuse played its best game all season, savoring whatever time it has left as a team with the ACC Tournament pulling the plug on fans before the NBA decision went down. The Orange are scheduled to play Louisville in the quarterfinals at 9 p.m. Along with that game, Bobby and James dug into a new Bourama Sidibe, the downfall of North Carolina after their long-standing dominance over Syracuse and what to expect from the Cardinals. Syracuse Basketball Podcast: Orange vs. North Carolina preview
The Orange stood up from a potentially season-derailing loss to Louisville and this team proves what's been evident since ACC play began, they're right there among the top of the middling teams. Whatever that's worth, it makes it interesting enough to watch this group. Only now it's too late to even talk ourselves into an NCAA Tournament at-large bid. James Szuba and Bobby Manning try and fail in this edition of the Syracuse Basketball Podcast. That still doesn't mean the Orange aren't capable of pulling us back to the TV, with a stellar second half against Georgia Tech and a beatdown at Pittsburgh. Even Bourama Sidibe is joining the productive fold, filling the scoring gap Buddy Boeheim's struggles cast over the team. North Carolina arrives for the Dome finale until the fall, starting a light finish to the regular season for the Orange on paper. They'll control their destiny for the five seed in the ACC Tournament, but whether due to the brand or Cole Anthony's return the Tarheels don't strike as a walkthrough. Syracuse's history against them, now having lost eight straight games back to 2015, doesn't bode well either. BC and Miami trips aside, the Orange still have one more test left before an intriguing postseason where the ACC (and probably NIT) have higher stakes than we're used to. 0:00-4:00 Syracuse likely fifth best ACC team for whatever that's worth 4:00-10:15 What does it say that Orange can get by without Buddy Boeheim's offense? 10:15-13:30 Cuse gets a KenPom bump 13:30-19:00 The Bourama Sidibe game 19:00-24:30 The Brendan Paul shot and Jalen Carey mascot chat 24:30-28:20 Syracuse's at-large chances are over, right? 28:20-34:50 North Carolina preview 34:50-38:00 Michael Carter-Williams vs. Carmelo Anthony on Monday Learn more about your ad choices. Syracuse Basketball Podcast: Orange vs. Georgia Tech preview, recruiting
Call it a wrap. Syracuse's season officially went off the rails against Louisville in a blowout loss that capped the Orange's ability to build an at-large bid for March Madness. Elijah Hughes' incredible season and efforts through injury against Florida State and Louisville will only register as a blip in the program's history on the way to the NIT, unless they can pull off a stunning ACC Tournament victory. We aren't holding our breath anymore. Three issues undermined this Syracuse season: aimless fouling, defensive rotations and rebounding. We dug into how all three led to a 1-5 stretch, and Jim Boeheim's epic rant against KenPom that was probably meant for NunesMagician. While the statistical hate didn't register with many, Boeheim hit on some valid points earlier in his Louisville presser. So we played agree/disagree, before previewing the Yellow Jackets' trip to Syracuse after allowing 97 points to the Orange in Atlanta. Don't count on that kind of game against streaking Georgia Tech. We wrapped with recruiting reporter Jake Weingarten, who's known Dior Johnson since he was in elementary school. Johnson could change the prospects of Syracuse recruiting as one of the program's largest gets since Carmelo Anthony. Will he bring help? Will he come period? What's this mean for the future of the coaching staff. Find out at the end of the show. 0:00-3:03 Slam the door on the NCAA Tournament for Syracuse 3:03-16:35 Agree/disagree Jim Boeheim press conference and KenPom 16:35-26:30 The three big issues that undermined this Orange season 27:00-30:00 Wine time 30:00-36:00 Georgia Tech preview 36:00-53:40 Dior Johnson and the future of Syracuse recruiting with Jake Weingarten Learn more about your ad choices. With two games against elite competition remaining, they also highlighted the three paths SU has to getting on the bubble. Syracuse Basketball Podcast: Orange vs. Notre Dame preview, part 2
After a three-game win streak that at least renewed hopes that this Syracuse Orange team could be intriguing into the early days of March, Bobby Manning and James Szuba hosted the staff of Cuse Militia for a look at the state of the Orange. A stunning shooting explosion burst Buddy Boeheim to the forefront of what looks like one of the most explosive offenses in the conference. Where do the Orange rank among them? Has the defense truly improved as it has appeared in many of the recent halves through that stretch? How much will Jim Boeheim continue to trust his bench? Syracuse Basketball Podcast: Talking the state of the Orange season with Brent Axe
Syracuse slipped by Oakland by 12 on Wednesday, but led by only single digits for most of the game. An inside look at their day in Central New York by Matthew Gutierrez revealed how the Golden Grizzlies entered the Dome fully confident they could beat a beleaguered Orange team and left feeling like they lost a game they should've won. The Orange advanced to 6-5, with only two weaker non-conference foes left. Though they haven't lost to a bad team yet, their defense is littered with issues. So many that Oakland's coach said it wasn't the zone he was expecting. Bobby Manning welcomed Brent Axe for all this, Jim Boeheim's rant against the crowd and a look ahead to North Florida on Friday. "Anybody they play that just have decent interior play, they have an opportunity to have a career day against the Orange because the defense is not there," Axe said. 00:00-4:40 College basketball struggling just like Syracuse 4:40-9:07 Joseph Girard III and Buddy Boeheim as part of defensive issues 9:07-13:44 Oakland open scouting report, left Syracuse feeling they should've won 13:44-18:10 Could Jesse Edwards emerge and where is Robert Braswell? 18:10-23:05 Why is Jim Boeheim ripping the Orange fans? 23:05-27:05 Should Syracuse fans continue to buy into this year's team? Matthew Gutierrez and James Szuba converge in Washington DC today before Syracuse and Georgetown tip-off for their 95th meeting. With ACC play digging into the non-conference schedule, will the Georgetown rivalry last for years to come? Does it even exist anymore? Jim Boeheim thinks it's a relic of the Big East, but Guti believes it still holds some merit. Guti also discussed his recent work with The Athletic, including his documenting of Rob Long's cancer battle and PTSD that followed along with Trevor Cooney's battle against mental health after a friend died through suicide. For Syracuse, a blowout win behind 97 points against Georgia Tech provides a chance for the season to turn around. Syracuse Basketball Podcast: Recapping a disappointing NIT Season Tip-Off
Syracuse Basketball Pod live from Brooklyn, where Syracuse again squandered a New York City trip. Last year, the Orange suffered a similar setback but regrouped into conference play to reach the NCAAs. Now Kevin and others are already talking NIT. A 4-3 start marks Syracuse's worst since 1996, a similar season of rebuilding after a successful veteran core departed, but there are some attributes that could still make this team better despite their obvious shortcomings: bench play, rebounding and a fast-break defensive lapse that cost SU the Oklahoma State game. We dive into Bourama Sidibe's recent play, a setback for Joe Girard, Jalen Carey's departure via injury and Quincy Guerrier's progression. Learn more about your ad choices.
