Fr. Ed Broom, O.M.V. – From Humdrum to Holy on Inside the Pages with Kris McGregor
In his book, “From Humdrum to Holy”, Fr. Ed Broom frames the Christian life as a real struggle that takes place amid competing influences: temptation, disordered desires, and a culture that offers shallow versions of happiness. Drawing from St. Ignatius of Loyola, he explains how spiritual discernment grows through self-knowledge—learning to notice what leads toward God and what draws the heart away. Ignatius’ own conversion, sparked by reading the lives of Christ and the saints during recovery from battle wounds, becomes a model for recognizing consolation and desolation. From this foundation, Fr. Broom introduces practical tools like the daily Examen, which involves gratitude, honest review of the day, sorrow for failures, and hope-filled resolution, all rooted in trust in God’s patience and mercy.
He then lays out a concrete “plan of life” meant to bring order to daily living, including prayer, Scripture, the Eucharist, confession, mercy toward others, reverence at Mass, meekness, ongoing formation, missionary outreach, and devotion to Mary and the Rosary. Regular confession and spiritual direction are presented as essential helps for forming a healthy conscience and deepening interior freedom, much like opening curtains to let in more light. Throughout, Fr. Broom returns to the danger of discouragement and fear, contrasting them with confidence in God’s goodness and grace. Growth in holiness comes not from perfection but from beginning again, trusting that God supplies what He asks and patiently leads the soul forward.

- In what ways have fear or discouragement quietly limited my openness to God’s will?
- How faithfully do I practice the daily Examen, and what patterns might God be inviting me to notice through it?

- How does regular reception of the Eucharist shape my priorities, attitudes, and relationships?
- What prevents me from approaching confession with trust rather than anxiety?
- How well formed is my conscience, and what practices help it grow in clarity and sensitivity to grace?
- Where might God be calling me to greater meekness, mercy, or patience with others?
- How attentive am I to interior noise or distractions that make it harder to listen for the Holy Spirit?
- When I fail, do I begin again with confidence in God’s mercy, or do I linger in self-reproach?
