Ep 215Episode 215: Wendell B. Harris, Jr. (feat. Robert Daniels of RogerEbert.com)

E

Wendell B. Harris Jr. is an American independent filmmaker trained in drama at Interlochen and Juilliard. His family founded Prismatic Images, a multi-award-winning film/video/audio production facility in Flint, Michigan, in 1979 and he broke onto the scene by making the breakthrough Sundance smash, Chameleon Street just one year after Steven Soderbergh broke with his debut film. One of my favorite film critics, Robert Daniels joins me to talk about Chameleon Street and the reason why it was Harris' only film to date. (He has tried many times to get projects greenlit but it still hasn't happened as of this recording). Robert and I celebrate the audacity of this remarkable talent both in front of the camera and behind it. Before that, we learn about Robert's background and have a discussion on the current state of film criticism. Then later on, we preview our next conversation for next year on Charles Burnett and more!00:00 - 41:30 - Introduction / Views on Film Criticism 41:31 - 01:34:55 - Chameleon Street / Wendall B. Wondering which one that is? You'll have to listen! Before we launch into the filmography, Clay and Jack talk about their humble beginnings and how they become cinephiles as well. Bonus Episode: 1993 Review - The Year In Music

bonusE

Soon enough Bill Ackerman will be bringing us an official director-centric episode soon and I will be discussing another in early July. For this excursion into something besides movies, in case you didn't know, I once hosted called Voices & Visions and I would recruit friend and Austin-based journalist Dan Solomon to go back 20 years to talk about a year in music - an art form that I love every bit much as film. For this retrospective, my guests and I curate a new list of ten favorite records from a favorite year, playing snippets of certain songs and discussing our feelings about music in general. As of 2021, I decided to include my friend Jason Simpson, also a writer, to join us in this endeavor, he's back to experience the fun as well. As listeners know, I've been going back 30 years to talk about the year in film with Collin Souter and Erik Childress, so I asked Jason and Dan to do the same from now on with records. 1993 was the year I officially started my own band so it's a special discussion for me, in terms of records that had a bigger impact than most. Hearing my number one choice for favorite record of this year changed my life forever. Hopefully everyone enjoys this discussion about our favorite records from 1993, even if there are very few references to films and directors for this bonus episode. It was such a blast sharing memories with dear friends from high school as well as getting to hear a lot of incredible music from the early 90s (Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, The Afghan Whigs, Liz Phair and so much more). If you want to hear the older episodes of the music retrospective, they are now archived below as well. Thank you so much for listening and much gratitude to Dan & Jay for their insights, opinions and a 30-year plus friendship. Ep 213Episode 213: Tsai Ming-Liang

E

Two years ago Bill Ackerman and Patrick Ripoll joined forces to do a deep dive into the filmography of Wong Kar-wai, an Asian filmmaker who found great acclaim with his quirky tales of loneliness and longing set among a world of urban alienation in contemporary Hong Kong. Now they return to do a deep dive into the filmography of Tsai Ming-Liang, an Asian filmmaker who found great acclaim with his quirky tales of loneliness and longing set among the world of urban alienation in contemporary Taipei. Time is a wheel we all can't help but ride. But any close examination will reveal Tsai Ming-Liang to be a peerless artist with a fascinating body of work totally unlike that of anyone in film history, a queer slow-cinema maverick whose fierce independence, devotion to his lead actor Lee Kang-Sheng, and intricately connected filmography rewards you more and more the closer you look. From his humble days in Taiwanese television to directing the first film ever commissioned by The Louvre, Patrick and Bill are here to guide you through the winding paths and enigmatic hidden treasures of one of Taiwan's greatest filmmakers, by charting a course through four of his most foundational works: REBELS OF THE NEON GOD (1992), WHAT TIME IS IT THERE? Bonus Episode: Jim's 45th Birthday Special Request (feat. Patrick Ripoll)

bonusE

Every year I ask my friend Patrick to provide me with something special in the form of a podcast gift. His friendship of course is the real gift but his presence for this episode is also a present. Not only does it celebrate my 45th birthday (May the 4th be with me) but we also decided to celebrate this here podcast!I asked Patrick this time to revisit the first two films we actively disagreed on going all the way back to Episode 2. What happens 12 years later when both him and I decide to re-watch The Devil's Rejects (dir. Rob Zombie) and Somewhere (dir. Sofia Coppola). Do we feel the same now as we did back then? The only way to know is to listen and find out. If you want to celebrate my birthday, all you have to do is give this your time. Thank you to my dear friend and former co-host / guest co-host Patrick for another delightful talk.00:00 - 08:27 - Intro 08:28 - 01:00:20 - The Devil's Rejects 01:00:21 - 01:46:36 - Somewhere 01:46:37 - 02:11:35 - OutroThis is a public episode. Ep 212Episode 212: Joan Micklin Silver (feat. Marya Gates & Bill Ackerman)

E

For this episode I recruited two terrific and talented film writers and commentators especially since two of the movies we talk about happen to be all-time favorites for the both of them. Guest co-host and Supporting Characters host Bill Ackerman returns as well as Chicago film critic Marya Gates for a delightful discussion on the work of Joan Micklin Silver. She's responsible for a number of excellent films including HESTER STREET, CHILLY SCENES OF WINTER, BETWEEN THE LINES, CROSSING DELANCEY and so much more! Thanks to this episode I have a new favorite romantic comedy to add to my list so I'm grateful for my guests for bringing their A-game to this conversation and please do follow their work as well as discover Joan Micklin Silver's films in any form possible! We also briefly preview the upcoming Chicago Critics Film Festival! Stay tuned next month for a lot to come featuring both Bill Ackerman and former co-host Patrick Ripoll. Bonus Episode: Favorite Food Movies (feat. Matt Strauss) + Midnight Snacks (feat. Marissa Robertcop)

bonusE

Yep, more bonus content to close out the month before Bill comes aboard in April with an epic series on Jean-Luc Godard. For this delicious treat of an episode, up front you get a delightful conversation featuring Matt Strauss from Tao Group Hospitality who oversees a number of New York restaurants and food + beverage venues in and around NYC. He has a lot to say about his exciting feast planned for this week which was inspired by his love of the film Babette's Feast which Bill and I discussed for the Director's Club Patreon at Matt's request! Definitely some surprise picks there! Bonus Episode: Ethan Warren (The Cinema Of Paul Thomas Anderson) + Patrick Ripoll (Licorice Pizza)

bonusE

As if 2 hours plus for PTA Part II wasn't enough, you are about to get even more content all about my favorite filmmaker. This time I interview author/writer extraordinaire Ethan Warren about his recently released book, The Cinema of Paul Thomas Anderson: American Apocrypha that I highly recommend. We talked for 40 mins about what inspired him to write it, along with thoughts on PTA in general. Soon after that, you'll get to hear more conversation from my former co-host Patrick Ripoll. About a year ago for Patreon, we reviewed Licorice Pizza which Patrick felt strongly about whereas I thought that it wasn't one of his strongest films for reasons you heard me bring up with Nick & Steve. I decided it was best to conclude this double dose of PTA talk with the original hosts on a film that Patrick did love.Speaking of that, be sure to stick around for the intro monologue since I go into greater detail on how I feel about Inherent Vice since I didn't express it entirely last time. Coming soon is Bill Ackerman's next contribution and it'll be a doozy for sure! Thank you all for listening, and thanks to Ethan & Patrick!00:00 - 18:00 - Intro / Inherent Vice Summation 18:01 - 52:06 - Interview With Ethan Warren 52:07 - 02:17:30 - Patrick Reviews Licorice PizzaVisit Ethan Warren's Site: http://ethanrawarren.comBuy His Book on PTA: https://cup.columbia.edu/book/the-cinema-of-paul-thomas-anderson/9780231204590Follow Ethan On Twitter: https://twitter.com/Ethan_Warren_In Case You Missed PTA Part II: https://www.directorsclubpodcast.com/episodes/pta2Check Out Patrick's Podcasts: https://link.chtbl.com/uptown https://www.nowplayingnetwork.net This is a public episode. Ep 211Episode 211: Paul Thomas Anderson Part II (feat. Nick Digilio & Steve Prokopy)

E

Way back in 2012 before THE MASTER had come out, for Episode 35, my former co-host Patrick and I enlisted Steve Prokopy to talk about my favorite director of all time. There were some disagreements here and there but it was a memorable discussion back then. Now that PTA has released four fascinating movies since the last time we recorded, it’s about time I recruit one of the people responsible for turning me into a movie freak: Mr. Nick Digilio of The Nick D Podcast. We catch up with Nick, talk very briefly about the Oscars and then we have conversations about THE MASTER, INHERENT VICE, PHANTOM THREAD & LICORICE PIZZA and we end with listing our top three favorites.. For an albeit dated discussion on the other films, check out the first PTA episode linked below. It was an honor to have Nick and Steve back on the podcast and stay tuned for Bill Ackerman’s next contribution (which will be multiple episodes) coming early next month.00:00 - 18:23 - Introduction / Oscar Talk18:24 - 01:10:59 - The Master / Inherent Vice01:11:00 - 02:04:17 - Phantom Thread / Licorice Pizza02:04:18 - 02:13:13 - Top 3 PTA Films / OutroPaul Thomas Anderson Part 1: https://directorsclubpodcast.libsyn.com/website/episode-35-paul-thomas-andersonThe Nick D Podcast: https://radiomisfits.com/podcasts/nickdpodcastThat Show Hasn’t Been Funny In Years: https://radiomisfits.com/podcasts/that-showSteve’s Third Coast Reviews: https://thirdcoastreview.com/author/steveprokopySteve on The Movie Madness Podcast: https://www.nowplayingnetwork.net/moviemadnessNick Digilio’s Martin Scorsese Director’s Club Eps: https://www.directorsclubpodcast.com/archives/martinscorseseJim’s PTA Filmography Ranked: https://letterboxd.com/jimlaczkowski/list/paul-thomas-anderson-rankedNick’s PTA Filmography Ranked: https://letterboxd.com/nick_digilio/list/paul-thomas-anderson-ranked This is a public episode. Ep 207Episode 207: Michael Curtiz Redux (feat. Dave Canfield & Michael Cockerill)

E

Mindframes hosts Michael Cockerill and Dave Canfield join me for this special tribute to honor our dear friend Sergio Mims. Several years ago, I did an episode on one of his favorite directors, Michael Curtiz. Of course you are encouraged to listen to that. But I asked Mike & Dave to join me to revisit two titles in particular from Curtiz as well as recommend several others as a way of honoring the memory of Sergio. Perhaps one of these films is an all-time classic called CASABLANCA? In addition, we review a couple of recent titles like RRR and AFTERSUN. Not only that, but after our conversation, you'll get to hear Sergio one last time on this show. Over a year ago, we did a Patreon exclusive episode on THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE, only not the Curtiz version surprisingly. Wanted everyone to hear Sergio's thoughts on that excellent film since it steps things up and is more faithful to the true story than Curtiz's take. Thank you so much for listening and mucho gratitude to Mike and Dave for coming on to talk some classics. We briefly mention our love of DOCTOR X, KING CREOLE and THE SEA WOLF!Listen to Sergio Mims’ Michael Curtiz episode (7 years ago): https://directorsclubpodcast.libsyn.com/website/episode-99-michael-curtizFor more Mike & Dave reviews, check out Mindframes! https://mindframesfilm.com00:00 - 08:04 - Intro 08:05 - 30:33 - What We Watched Recently 30:34 - 01:18:57 - Curtiz & Casablanca 01:18:58 - 01:55:20 - The Breaking Point 01:55:21 - 02:16:10 - Other Curtiz Films / Outro 02:16:11 - 03:01:11 - Sergio Mims Talks About The Charge Of The Light Brigade! This is a public episode. Ep 206Episode 206: Sergio Mims' Song Of The South Commentary

E

Normally something like this would be a bonus episode, but this is a special exception. As Erik wrote: Sergio Mims, our noted film scholar and friend, was well on his way to becoming “King Commentary” with all his official contributions to Blu-rays for Kino, Vinegar Syndrome and others. During the pandemic at the peak of lockdown, Collin Souter of Christmas Movies Actually, suggested that our good friend record one for Disney’s controversial 1940 film, Song of the South. Sergio did not hesitate and delivered something for his friends. Some of them are here to again pay brief tribute to the man who was a regular part of the Movie Madness podcast. Jim Laczkowski is joined by both Collin and the Movie Madness host, Erik Childress, to introduce this track that can now be experienced by everyone. Whether you have a version of the film to sync up with or not it doesn’t matter, because you can just sit back and soak in the words of a film lover who left us way too soon. Bonus Episode: Happy Halloween

bonusE

There's something strange... in your podcast feed... but don't call me. I have no idea how it got there. Perhaps the devil? Bonus Episode: Philip Brubaker (How To Explain Your Mental Illness To Stanley Kubrick)

bonusE

A special bonus episode is here to highlight one of the many excellent offerings from the Mental Filmness Film Festival. Hopefully the title alone is enough to get you intrigued to check out the title I’m focusing on for this conversation. Philip Józef Brubaker is my guest today and a multi-talented one at that. He has created and edited comedic shorts, experimental films, video essays, documentaries and more! His 2009 documentary BRUSHES WITH LIFE: ART, ARTISTS AND MENTAL ILLNESS won multiple awards within the film industry, screened at festivals and aired state-wide on public television. Most recently, he has garnered a lot of acclaim and attention for his work as a video essayist (of which there are many examples of that you should track down) and of course, my first introduction to his work was due to the fact that he did an essay on work by my favorite director, Paul Thomas Anderson showcasing correlations between PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE and THE LONG GOODBYE. Now he’s hitting the festival circuit with a personal, often very funny and meta-layered essay-memoir-experimental feature in which the title says a lot - that would be HOW TO EXPLAIN YOUR MENTAL ILLNESS TO STANLEY KUBRICK now streaming for a couple of more weeks via Sharon Gissy’s Mental Filmness Film Festival that I truly hope you’ll make time for. Thank you so much to Philip for taking the time to talk about his past and present work that I know you will get a lot out of once you see it.00:00 - 08:43 - Introduction 08:44 - 01:12:30 - Interview With Philip BrubakerCheck Out Philip’s Film Streaming Free Till November 6th:https://watch.eventive.org/mentalfilmness2022 https://bit.ly/3TQg3ja Philip’s Website:https://philipbrubaker.comPhilip’s Vimeo:https://vimeo.com/philipbrubakerPhilip’s YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/pjbrubakPhilip's Twitter: https://twitter.com/lens_itselfPhilip’s Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/bolddecade Mental Filmness (Watch For Free Now):https://mentalfilmness2022.eventive.org/welcomeThis is a public episode. Ep 205Episode 205: Allan Moyle (feat. Justin Decloux)

E

What an episode in so many ways that it’s hard to know where to begin in even writing an introduction. The first ten minutes are mostly about me remembering a friend and film critic near and dear to many of us along with promoting and supporting an upcoming film festival as well. I hope you won’t skip over the beginning since it would mean a lot if you listened to the tribute about someone very important to my life and to the lives of many. There will be more words and a separate write-up on that to come. Of course the bulk of this episode surrounds the work of a filmmaker that also means a lot to me personally: Allan Moyle - a name I’m sure you know by now due to how many times I’ve mentioned the film PUMP UP THE VOLUME on this podcast. But what about his other work as well? My guests today are recurring co-host and Supporting Characters host Bill Ackerman and a delightful and accomplished newcomer, co-host of The Important Cinema Club Podcast, Justin Decloux. All three of us have a lot to say about different personal experiences not just involving Allan Moyle’s work, including TIMES SQUARE and EMPIRE RECORDS, but early on, due to this coming out in October, we provide various horror film recommendations that we consider to be “outside the box” (though mine are certainly ones I’ve championed in the past but they’re now available to stream via The Criterion Channel). Be sure to grab a pen and paper to jot down some titles! This was recorded during an emotional time to be sure (what a year) but I’m truly grateful to my guests for coming on with short notice for this discussion and stay tuned to the feed for much more to come. The spirit of friend / hero and Chicago film historian Sergio Mims is infused in this episode as you’ll hear. We are thinking of him and his many friends and family. Stay tuned for more information about an upcoming tribute to him at the Black Harvest Film Festival at the Gene Siskel Film Center. 00:00 - 10:20 - Introduction / Sergio Mims10:21 - 17:00 - Intro To The Show17:01 - 53:49 - Horror Recommendations For This Month53:50 - 01:35:38 - The Rubber Gun, Times Square01:35:39 - 02:04:39 - Pump Up The Volume02:04:40 - 02:33:46 - Empire Records, New Waterford Girl02:33:46 - 02:55:35 - Other Moyle Films / Top 3 / OutroBill’s Conversation With Sergio Mims:http://www.nowplayingnetwork.net/supportingcharacters/episode45More About Sergio Mims:https://chicago.suntimes.com/obituaries/2022/10/6/23391442/sergio-mims-movie-critic-black-harvest-film-festival-obituaryMental Filmness Film Festival (Virtual):https://mentalfilmness2022.eventive.org/filmsMental Filmness Film Festival (Live):https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mental-filmness-live-a-film-festival-about-mental-health-tickets-428260537797Criterion Channel (80s Horror):https://www.criterionchannel.com/80s-horror Learn More About Justin & The Important Cinema Club:https://www.filmtrap.comThis is a public episode. Bonus Episode: New Movie Reviews + Interview With Neil LaBute (House Of Darkness)

bonusE

Oh hello there! This is my way of reviewing new releases once in a while and provide them here for you - monologue-style. This time I'm providing some reviews for early September including something very special: a bonus interview with the writer/director of one of the new films I’m reviewing. Neil LaBute has been making interesting features for well over 20 years and his latest is a creepy little Gothic horror film called House Of Darkness (opening on September 9th). Listen to him talk about it, then give a listen to my review along with three other titles as well.Usually these are available on Patreon but decided to include this one on the main feed as well. I also talk a lot more than usual in the intro for personal reasons concerning mental health and why there was a bit of an absence in August. Hopefully you enjoy this bonus episode right before hearing the next official episode from guest host Bill Ackerman coming within the next week. Give it up for his great work so far with the Stephen Sayadian episode too! Thank you for the support & for listening to this episode. Bonus Episode: Mary Sweeney (editor of Lost Highway)

bonusE

As you'll hear during the introduction, David Lynch is an important filmmaker to me for a variety of reasons. Mary Sweeney collaborated with him for about 15 years as an editor, producer and writer. Talking with her was an absolute joy.Mary is truly an accomplished, multi-talented human being in so many ways. I was honored to spend 30 minutes with her over the phone to talk about her experiences working with Lynch and also to promote the upcoming 4K Restoration of LOST HIGHWAY, which is showing at The Music Box Theatre on August 6th featuring a Q&A after the film with Mary Sweeney in-person. E

One of my favorite cinephiles on the planet joins me today to talk about a director they were thrilled to discuss. Film writer and podcaster extraordinare Mitchell Beaupre is a regular at Filmspotting Trivia which is where our paths first crossed and I have been following their work ever since. We get to know a little more about Mitchell during the intro but mainly sing the praises of most (if not all) of the work of James Gray starting with his debut leading all the way up to AD ASTRA. For the what we watched recently segment, Mitchell brings up Coppola's THE OUTSIDERS and then I review ANONYMOUS CLUB and linked below is my interview with the director of that film Danny Cohen. So grateful to Mitchell for coming on the show and already looking forward to a return appearance in the future. Please be sure to follow their work the way I do too! Bonus Episode: Michael Glover Smith (Relative)

bonusE

Michael Glover Smith loves movies so much, it was inevitable that he would go on to make some of his own. Not only that, he writes about movies, teaches film classes, and has even written a book on Chicago film history. I had the immense pleasure of finally catching up with MERCURY IN RETROGRADE and shared my reaction to a casting choice during our interview here, but the bulk of the conversation surrounds his latest film, the empathic family dramedy RELATIVE. A great ensemble of talent carries this sweet story of a Chicago-based family getting together for their son’s college graduation. A lot of tension emerges but so does a lot of compassion and concern for one another. Wait til you hear about some of the cast, especially the accomplished actors that play the parents. Michael shared a lot of interesting and unexpected connections regarding everyone and even though we talked for close to an hour, there were other questions I could’ve asked since he’s articulate/passionate about his work. Definitely check out the RELATIVE website below and if you get this in time, there’s a special screening event taking place in the neighborhood where he resides and where some of the film was shot. If you miss that screening at The New 400 coming up, there will be plenty of opportunities so stay tuned. Grateful to Michael for taking some time out and looking forward to talking with him again. Ep 201Episode 201: Keith Gordon + Underrated Films Of The 1960s

E

So you might remember him as Arnie from CHRISTINE and that's where I first became aware of the terrific talent of one writer/director/actor extraordinaire Keith Gordon. He's been on Director's Club a half dozen times which is truly an honor and a pleasure. We continue a yearly tradition where we check in and take the opportunity to nerd out about the cinema of years past.We go back to talk about a particular decade in film citing some under-seen titles that may have been underappreciated at the time. Several of these you may have heard of, but the reason I enjoy doing this is to hear Keith’s thoughts on titles such as SECONDS, POINT BLANK, THE INNOCENTS and many more! There are honorable mentions & this time, we briefly talk about what it was like working with Sheryl Lee on his great Vonnegut adaptation, MOTHER NIGHT.This is a wonderful discussion as always so if you've been a fan of our other talks, I have no doubt you'll enjoy the latest one as well. Bonus Episode: Cloak & Dagger (1984) (feat. Erik Childress)

bonusE

Bonus episodes will be ending soon! We'll be back to our regularly scheduled program in a matter of days for sure. Instead of making this a Patreon exclusive, I decided to share this with everyone since it is a special one. Once again, I’m joined by Chicago film critic Erik Childress of the Movie Madness podcast as well as co-host of The Friendship Dilemma to record a full-length feature commentary track of yet another film from 1984. The first one we did together was for another film my dad and I bonded over, THE LAST STARFIGHTER. This time, thanks to a glorious 4K release from Vinegar Syndrome, we decided to finally follow-up with another commentary for CLOAK & DAGGER. It’s a movie that means a lot to me. Join us on Davy’s journey through espionage and intrigue - a nostalgia-fueled trip through our childhoods covering everything from Atari games to our appreciation for both Dabney Coleman and Henry Thomas as a great father/son pairing that surprisingly gets very moving thanks to Tom Holland’s ingenious script and Richard Franklin’s assured, subtle direction. Huge thanks to my dad for making sure I saw this at a young age as well as my Aunt Jean who somehow got a VHS bootleg copy that I wore out when I was a kid. Bonus Episode: 1992 Review - The Year In Music

bonusE

Tis the season for more bonus content but soon enough Bill Ackerman will be bringing us an official director-centric episode soon. For this excursion into something besides movies, I once hosted called Voices & Visions and I would recruit friend and Austin-based journalist Dan Solomon to go back 20 years to talk about a year in music - an art form that I love every bit much as film. For this retrospective, my guests and I curate a new list of ten favorite records from that year, playing snippets of certain songs and discussing our feelings about music in general. As of 2021, I decided to include my dear friend Jason Simpson, also a writer, to join us in this endeavor. As listeners know, I've been going back 30 years to talk about the year in film with Collin Souter and Erik Childress, so I asked Jason and Dan to do the same from now on with records. 1992 was the year I officially became a musician so it's a special discussion for me, in terms of records that had a bigger impact than most even if my taste has changed over the years. Hopefully everyone enjoys this discussion about our favorite records from that particular year, even if there are very few references to films and directors for this bonus episode. It was such a blast sharing memories with dear friends from high school as well as getting to hear a lot of incredible music from the early 90s. If you want to hear the older episodes of the music retrospective, they are now archived below as well. Thank you so much for listening and much gratitude to Dan & Jay for their insights, opinions and a 30-year friendship. Bonus Episode: The Swimmer (1968) (feat. Sergio Mims)

bonusE

For those who don't know, my favorite way to exercise has always been swimming. I'm slowly getting back into it as a regular part of my daily routine. Not only that, Frank Perry's THE SWIMMER is becoming an all-time favorite of mine with every viewing and I wanted to talk to a true film historian about it. Sergio Mims returns to the show for another bonus discussion on this fascinating Burt Lancaster picture from 1968 that audiences were probably not ready for at the time. As always, I learned a lot from Sergio but we talked a lot about its themes surrounding toxic masculinity, suburban angst and so much more. Grateful to Sergio for talking with me for an hour. This serves as a nice prelude to the upcoming Keith Gordon episode recording in a couple weeks about underrated films of the 1960s. Towards the end, we start talking about the state of cinema in general and even preview a couple of upcoming episodes later in the year! The next official director episode comes courtesy of new bi-monthly co-host Bill Ackerman of Supporting Characters so stay tuned for that soon! Not to mention the fact that Bill will also be covering the work of Frank Perry later in the year as well so you'll hear even more about his other films on this show in the future. Bonus Episode: Jay Cheel (Cursed Films II)

bonusE

Jay Cheel is a writer/director/editor as well as a co-host of the podcast responsible for turning me into a podcaster, Film Junk. I thought why not talk with him right after dropping Episode 200 about his excellent Shudder series, Cursed Films which recently put out its second season that I highly encourage you to see. Always great to talk with such a talented, articulate filmmaker like Jay.His series, Cursed Films II covers new titles. The show explores the myths and legends behind some of Hollywood's notoriously cursed horror film productions and even tackles how the filmmakers and actors have been affected by being a part of films such as Stalker, The Wizard Of Oz, Rosemary's Baby, The Serpent & The Rainbow and ending this season with Cannibal Holocaust.Thank you so much Jay for this delightful, insightful conversation and stay tuned for more bonus content as well as Bill Ackerman's first episode as official co-host coming early next month! Ep 200Episode 200: Crash & Phantom Thread (feat. Patrick Ripoll)

E

Episode 200 is here (technically this is the 300th episode if you include bonus episodes). Of course, I had to invite my original co-host and dear friend Patrick Ripoll back to the show since it all began with him and I talking about Cameron Crowe in front of microphones back in January 2011. This serves as not only a celebration of the podcast but as an early birthday treat. So why not talk about two of my favorite directors over the course of two entire films they’ve made. I was never the biggest fan of David Cronenberg’s CRASH but I’m slowly coming around. Patrick was never the biggest fan of Paul Thomas Anderson’s PHANTOM THREAD either. Now he’s also warming up to it a little more. We hash it out together, ask questions, talk about specific scenes that we adore and so much more throughout this eventful 4 hour conversation. You have the option of syncing up the two movies (we instruct how along the way) or simply listen to the two of us talking about both films and the directors that made them. This was pure joy and a great way to celebrate a podcast anniversary that I’m sure you’ll enjoy especially if you’ve been with us since the very beginning.00:00 - 11:11 - Introduction11:12 - 01:53:49 - Crash Commentary01:53:50 - 04:00:12 - Phantom Thread Commentary04:00:13 - 04:10:14 - OutroCheck out Patrick's podcast:https://nowplayingnetwork.net/tracksofthedamnedSupport The Show:https://www.patreon.com/directorsclubThis is a public episode. Ep 199Episode 199: Todd Haynes Redux (feat. Sharon Gissy)

E

One of my very favorite people on the planet joins me to talk about a director that was covered a decade ago but deserves revisiting especially in light of his more recent work. The wonderful Sharon Gissy, creator of the Mental Filmness Film Festival returns to the show to talk all about groundbreaking director Todd Haynes. I know many years ago on the show I brought attention to his masterpiece SAFE but wanted to revisit it now given the times we live in and to hear Sharon’s thoughts especially on that one and several others from his filmography. We don’t dive too deep into his films that deconstruct the music biopic but we cover ones that we feel the most passionate about for sure. Though as a side note, I do also recommend his MILDRED PIERCE miniseries remake and the recent VELVET UNDERGROUND documentary though we didn’t cover those here. I also ask Sharon about her favorite portrayals of mental health in cinema and talk about a recent rewatch of GIRL, INTERRUPTED.00:00 - 07:17 - Introduction07:18 - 28:58 - What We Watched Recently28:59 - 02:14:05 - Todd Haynes!02:14:06 - 02:21:23 - Top 3 Todd Haynes Films / OutroFollow Sharon (Mental Filmness):https://twitter.com/MentalFilmnesshttps://www.facebook.com/mentalfilmnessThis is a public episode. Episode 197: Jane Campion Redux (feat. Marya Gates & Ryan McNeil)

Most of my new episodes this year are all about revising, rethinking and revisiting directors covered here in the past. Yes, I guess you can call these sequels but "reboots are in." Joining me to talk about one of my favorite filmmakers this time are two wonderful podcasters and writers of the highest caliber. Bonus Episode: The Movie That Changed My Life

For this bonus episode, I announce the winners of the Blu-Ray giveaway during the introduction and talk about future plans and possible revisions. Those changes will be confirmed in the months to come but this episode is mainly just a quick showcase regarding the movie that changed my life forever. I’ve talked about it a lot in the past and have done some interviews about it. Here, I just put three excerpts together of moments where I discuss the film PUMP UP THE VOLUME with others including writer/director Allan Moyle and actress Samantha Mathis. Mathis also talks about River Phoenix and working with Peter Bogdanovich which I felt was timely to include. Later on I play an extended clip from Corey Pierce’s The Soundtrack Of Your Life which is a now-defunct podcast that I highly recommend checking out all episodes of which I linked below. I figured with Episode 200 around the corner (technically 300 with bonus episodes), I’d mention again why this film means so much to me for its partially responsible for turning me into the podcaster / cinephile that I am today. Thank you to everyone for the email entries for the contest and for your kind words and encouragement these past 11 years. It means a lot to me, truly. Episode 196: Favorite Films Of 2021

Another year in cinema has come and gone. 2021 was certainly one of the more difficult and challenging years for me personally (we all needed lots of hugs) but it's ended on a high note particularly with the films discussed here. As always, I needed to invite special guests to celebrate the year in cinema, two familiar voices you know and love join me to discuss our favorite films of 2021. Returning to the show is my dear friend Patrick Ripoll, current host of Tracks of the Damned and former co-host of this here show. Another great returning champion and former co-host is Brad Strauss who was kind enough to take over hosting duties for a few years, doing stellar work with his compadre Al. Happy to have him join us too! This time you're in for a treat because you can actually win a couple of Blu-Rays by listening to the episode and following the instructions given (all entries/emails must be in by Jan 11th). After summarizing the year that was, we run down a list of categories/awards like we do every time as well as a list of honorable mentions before revealing our top ten favorite films of the year. Prepare yourself for a song later on to celebrate someone who is definitely there in spirit but couldn't join us this time, the one and only Bill Ackerman of Supporting Characters. This was one heck of a year and now it's time to listen to us talk about it for five hours. Much gratitude to all of you for listening and for all the support. 11 years of doing this show and there's never a dull moment. Episode 195: Fritz Lang (feat. Kerry Finegan)

Joining me today for a shorter but another in-depth discussion is the wonderful co-host of Christmas Movies Actually, Kerry Finegan. Over a year ago, she asked if I had done an episode on this director yet and of course, this is one I have wanted to cover for quite some time having only seen a couple of his films two decades ago. As stated in the episode, there simply has to be a sequel in the future for this name because we have so much left to cover mainly his very accomplished work in film noir! A couple of those I highly recommend when I reveal my list of favorites. Austrian-German filmmaker Fritz Lang, who is sometimes referred to as the “inventor of film noir," was initially known as a silent film director that made an eventual science fiction cult classic known as METROPOLIS. But as we both say in this episode, M stands for masterpiece so we cover that title along with his first feature made in America with Spencer Tracy, FURY, along with THE TESTAMENT OF DR. MABUSE. For the what we watched segment, I bring up the little-seen coming-of-age dramedy PINK SKIES AHEAD and there is also a review of a certain MATRIX sequel that has just come out as well. 00:00 - 07:28 - Introduction 07:29 - 31:13 - What We Watched Recently 31:14 - 01:37:31 - Fritz Lang Discussion 01:37:32 - 01:46:36 - Top 3 Films / Outro This is a public episode. Bonus Episode: Andy Ostroy (Adrienne)

You may not know the name of today's guest but hopefully you are aware of the subject of his new documentary, ADRIENNE. This is one of the best films of 2021. Personally, the radiant Adrienne Shelly was one of my favorite actresses ever since discovering her in the early 90s through the work of Hal Hartley. Then she went on to write and direct one of my favorite romantic comedies, Waitress, which is now a successful Broadway play. I may be biased in loving Andy's film due to my love of Shelly but I guarantee watching it is an experience that everyone will connect to in some way. Whether it's discovering who Adrienne was as an artist or seeing how the family responds to tragedy, there is something for everyone here, as hard as it is to watch at times especially if you're a fan of her work and wish we could have so much more. But Andy's brave and compassionate approach is truly something to treasure and there's no doubt Adrienne would approve. Thank you so much to Andy for not only this film but for a lot of joy and insight in remembering a true talent, taking from us way too soon. I'm grateful to Adrienne for the legacy she left and please go back and celebrate all of her work as an actress/writer/director. Episode 194: Sarah Polley (feat. Kate Blair)

Having made three films as a director, Sarah Polley has become one of my favorite storytellers. All of her work has reflected an experience I’ve had to one degree or another and I’ve been a fan of hers going all the way back to her roles in films like GO and THE SWEET HEREAFTER. Joining me for an insightful discussion on her extraordinary three movies is returning guest and friend Kate Blair, who has written for several film websites and remains one of my favorite people to talk movies with. For this episode, we go through Polley’s exceptional work starting with her debut feature AWAY WE GO and ending on the hybrid docudrama STORIES WE TELL. And of course, there’s a lot to say about the rather divisive TAKE THIS WALTZ as well. Be sure to preorder Polley’s first memoir coming out next year and check out her interviews and podcasts because she’s passionate, articulate and remarkably brave and revealing in so many ways. In addition, we briefly talk about the HBO show SUCCESSION, PTA’s LICORICE PIZZA and the heartbreaking new Netflix documentary PROCESSION which was recently shown at the 2021 Chicago Critics Film Festival. 00:00 - 09:08 - Introduction 09:09 - 32:30 - What We Watched Recently 32:31 - 02:04:09 - Sarah Polley’s Films 02:04:10 - 02:12:16 - Outro Kate Blair’s Letterboxd Sarah Polley on The Thin Red Line DGC Podcast: Sarah Polley | Adaptation Process & Changing Expectations for Directors Sarah Polley Opens Up About What Really Matters to Her Sarah Polley - Interview Magazine Preorder Sarah’s Memoir Out in 2022 This is a public episode. Bonus Episode: Zeros And Ones (feat. Bill Ackerman, Chris O'Neill and Abel Ferrara)

Director's Club is proud to present a special episode hosted by regular contributor Bill Ackerman of the Supporting Characters podcast. He is joined by filmmaker and film programmer Chris O'Neill to talk about the latest film, Zeros and Ones from the last director we covered on the show, Abel Ferrara. In addition, there is an interview with the director himself which is a true honor. I can't thank Bill enough for doing this which I would've loved to have been a part of but my final semester in grad school is starting to wrap up so I've been extra busy. Looking forward to catching up with this film and for fans of Ferrara, this is a real treat. Thank you so much Bill & Chris for their hard work and thoughtful insights. Be sure to check out Zeros and Ones. The film will play in select theaters and available everywhere you rent movies on November 19th - Jim This is a public episode. The Chicago Critics Film Association throws an annual film fest, giving the public a chance to see buzzed-about unreleased films that deserve to be seen on the big screen. This year's lineup includes a 40th anniversary 35mm midnight screening of Michael Mann's THIEF in addition to several titles that critics are raving about including Maggie Gyllenhall's THE LOST DAUGHTER and Jane Campion's THE POWER OF THE DOG among several other titles that I’m excited to see. Not to mention Collin Souter’s incredible mixtape / playlist of short films that are playing Saturday afternoon too! Episode 193: Abel Ferrara (feat. Bill Ackerman)

One of the best guests you can have on any movie podcast would be Supporting Characters host Bill Ackerman, who returns for a yearly visit, this time to talk about the down & dirty gritty auteur Abel Ferrara. Usually for October, we try our best to talk about a horror director and though Ferrara isn't classified as one, you can certainly look at his films as being disturbing with some horrific scenes and well, THE ADDICTION does have vampires after all. Bill saw probably three times as much as I did though I managed to comment on about ten titles throughout the conversation. The ones everyone has likely seen are what we talk about at length including MS. 45, KING OF NEW YORK, BAD LIEUTENANT, TOMMASO and more! In addition, for the what we watched segment, Bill reviews WHEEL OF FORTUNE AND FANTASY and I bring up I bring up Mia Hansen-Love’s BERGMAN ISLAND. 00:00 - 08:22 - Introduction 08:23 - 31:59 - What We Watched Recently 32:00 - 02:00:14 - Early Ferrara (up to The Addiction) 02:00:15 - 02:56:44 - Middle To Recent Ferrara 02:56:45 - 03:02:57 - Top Ferrara Films / Outro Check out Bill's podcast: https://nowplayingnetwork.net/supportingcharacters Follow Bill on Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/billackerman Ranked Letterboxd List For This Episode: https://letterboxd.com/jimlaczkowski/list/episode-193-abel-ferrara This is a public episode. Episode 192: Richard Donner (feat. Erik Childress)

Inspired by one of my favorite podcasts, Screen Drafts, I decided to revise their general format for just this episode in which Movie Madness host Erik Childress and I collaborated on what we feel are the top ten Richard Donner movies. Yes, this is subjective and we consider these to be personal favorites overall but there were a couple of twists along the way mainly due to different placement and some titles that one of us may have felt more strongly about than others. This won’t become the new format, so don’t fret, but I thought this would be a nice little tribute to a fun action director of solid escapist entertainment. After all, I love lists, game shows and movies even if we all know that ranking art is arbitrary and silly. This was a blast and maybe I’ll do it again next year just as another offshoot. We return to our regularly scheduled program next month. In addition, for the what we watched segment, I review, ANNE AT 13,000 FT, THE NOWHERE INN and Eastwood’s CRY MACHO while Erik brings up a surprising TIFF title that I think we can all look forward to! Keep in mind that our own personal rankings differ from the drafted list. The only way you can find out what made the Donner cut is by listening. Thanks Erik for being a great guest as always and much appreciated to all of you who subscribe & share accordingly. 00:00 - 09:56 - Introduction 09:57 - 32:40 - What We Watched 32:41 - 02:05:30 - Richard Donner Top Ten Draft 02:05:31 - 02:26:08 - Final List / Outro Follow Erik:http://www.nowplayingnetwork.net/moviemadness https://twitter.com/EriktheMovieman https://letterboxd.com/erikthemovieman Check Out Christmas Movies Actually: http://www.nowplayingnetwork.net/christmasmoviesactually/episode47 My review of ANNE AT 13,000 FT: https://www.voicesvisions.net/reviews/anne My personal Donner rankings (not the drafted list): https://letterboxd.com/jimlaczkowski/list/episode-192-richard-donner This is a public episode. Episode 191: John Sturges (feat. Sergio Mims)

Jim here! I'm back as your monthly host! And since this era of filmmaking isn't necessarily my area of expertise, of course I had to recruit a "magnificent" returning guest by the name of Sergio Mims who of course adores the Western genre and even came up with the roster of underseen titles by the great John Sturges. You may know him as the director of such beloved classics like THE GREAT ESCAPE, but we mainly focus on lesser-known works that you should try to seek out. We avoid spoilers through most of the films and mention how you can track down a lot of these hidden gems. Gone are the parody songs but returning is the "what we watched" segment in which I review a couple of new releases (EMA, VAL) and Sergio talks about the documentary SEARCHING FOR MR. RUGOFF. Thank you again to Patrick for filling in these past three months for some excellent episodes you should check out if you haven't yet. Much gratitude as always to the walking Wikipedia of film knowledge as well for joining me in this fun discussion! Episode 190: Wong Kar-Wai Redux (feat. Patrick Ripoll & Bill Ackerman)

Nearly ten years ago, Jim and Patrick tried doing an episode on this beloved Hong Kong filmmaker but technology wasn't entirely cooperative back then. It was still released, but incomplete. Now many episodes later, Patrick returns sans Jim to try again with some great help as always from reliable, returning guest and podcaster extraordinare Bill Ackerman (Supporting Characters). This time, they each go through the entire filmography of Wong Kar-wai starting from the very beginning. Five hours later, they reach the end! So grateful to both Bill and Patrick for their incredible hard work and stamina for what's yet another enjoyable conversation about a masterful director whose In The Mood For Love is considered one of the all-time greatest films. Movies You Should See #1: What Happened Was (1994)

No, the old format didn't go away. This is just something special. If you want more bonus content like this, please join the Director's Club Patreon for only $5/month. You'll help support this show, Voices + Visions and the Now Playing Network. In the introduction, I establish a new monthly offering for those wanting more shorter content in the future in addition to the regular show. Hopefully there will be even more to come depending on guest availability / contributions. This is just a sample, posted in the regular feed for all of you to enjoy. The gist of "Movies You Should See" is simply just that, in which a guest comes on to talk with me for under an hour about a title they're passionate about and that I've been meaning to catch up with. Today's guest is none other than Bill Ackerman (also coming on later this month w/Patrick for Wong Kar-Wai). We analyze the many strengths of Tom Noonan's fascinating play adaptation, WHAT HAPPENED WAS, which is becoming a new favorite of mine the more I see it. It was fun not only to talk about the movie, but the characters' unexpected interactions and how awkward & funny a first "date" can actually be. Bonus Episode: Birthday 43

I’ve done a lot of podcasts in my time but this one might be the craziest I’ve ever been a part of. Thanks to my dear friend Patrick Ripoll, this is one of those birthday gifts that I’ll cherish forever. What Patrick did was invent 43 movie and music-related games for my 43rd birthday and we turned them into 43 segments. Not to mention the 10 hours of editing Patrick did to put this madness together. For about the first 90 minutes, the volume levels fluctuate a bit due to recording online but don’t fret. Then for the next 90 minutes, we got together in person for the first time in a long time so it sounds even better. There’s no need to list the games here we played in the show notes since half the fun is seeing what comes next. Needless to say, if you’re a fan of Popcorn Supper or old-school Director’s Club or the yearly tradition of doing something unconventional this time of year to celebrate the fact that I’m still here on this planet, you do not want to skip over this. Also stay tuned to Voices & Visions for an interview with an actress that is truly special in so many ways as well as Patrick’s next three stints hosting this here show while I take a brief summer hiatus. Thanks to Patrick for his hard work and to all of you for continuing to listen and supporting this weird, wild show - Jim Be sure to check out episodes of Patrick's podcast too: http://www.nowplayingnetwork.net/tracksofthedamned This is a public episode.
