Negli anni cinquanta Il dottor Edmund Schulman scoprì alcuni esemplari di alberi secolari nelle vicinanze delle White Mountains, in California, che vennero soprannominati Matusalemme e Prometeo. Erano gli alberi più antichi del mondo. Erano, perché uno di loro venne abbattuto per errore nel 1964.
