S2 Ep 36#239: Avoid These Things If You Want a Healthier Brain with Dr. Daniel Amen

Avoid These Things If You Want a Healthier Brain | This episode is brought to you by BLUblox and Cozy Earth. The brain is capable of some incredible and life-altering changes. The hippocampus actually creates 700 new stem cells every single day, meaning the brain can regenerate, improve, and heal from traumatic injuries and other significant insults to function better than ever. We’re more successful at this when we know what the underlying causes of dysfunction are. The brain is one organ that is often treated without ever being seen. Imaging provides us with an amazing look at what areas of the brain are suffering. We can also look at our habits, genetic predispositions, emotional and physical health history, environment, and many other factors to understand the root of brain imbalances. Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru talks to our good friend and colleague, Dr. Daniel Amen, about all this and more. Dr. Amen is a physician, double board-certified psychiatrist, twelve-time New York Times bestselling author, and founder of Amen Clinics, with 10 clinics across the United States. Amen Clinics has the world’s largest database of brain SPECT scans related to behavior, totaling nearly 200,000 scans on patients from 150 countries. Dr. Amen’s research team has published more than 80 scientific articles on his work, and Discover Magazine named his research using SPECT to distinguish posttraumatic stress disorder from traumatic brain injury as one of the top 100 stories in science for 2015. Dr. Amen is the author of many books including the mega-bestseller Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, as well as The End of Mental Illness, Memory Rescue, Healing ADD, and The Daniel Plan, written with Dr. Mark Hyman and Pastor Rick Warren. In March 2021, he released Your Brain Is Always Listening: Tame the Hidden Dragons That Control Your Happiness, Habits and Hang Ups. In this episode, we dive into: -How improving your brain health improves every aspect of your life (7:35) -Why Dr. Amen hates the term mental illness (12:50) -What you do to your brain you do to your body (14:24) -The hidden forces that are having a dramatic impact on our brain and bodies (17:32) -What Dr. Amen did to take control of his brain health (24:04) -How to have mastery over the health of your brain and body (28:52) -How influences from your past steal your happiness (33:52) -How mold can wreak havoc on the brain (48:34) -How to get control over the inflammation in your body and brain (55:21) -Common reasons why people get derailed from following through on a plan (1:01:33) Also mentioned in this episode: -The UltraMind Solution by Dr. Mark Hyman - https://amzn.to/3Czdjyg -Amen Clinics - http://amenclinics.com -Know Your Dragon’s Quiz - https://knowyourdragons.com/ -The Brain Warrior’s Way Podcast - https://brainwarriorswaypodcast.com/ -Brain Thrive by 25 Course - https://www.amenuniversity.com/brain-thrive-by-25-basic -Change Your Brain, Change Your Life Foundation - https://changeyourbrain.org/ -I Told You So! S2 Ep 34#238: Hormonal Imbalances Can Ruin Your Life, Here’s How to Fix Them with Dr. Sara Gottfried

Hormonal Imbalances Can Ruin Your Life, Here’s How to Fix Them | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and InsideTracker. Mainstream medicine often fails us when it comes to hormonal imbalances. Hormones aren’t commonly tested, even when there is a high likelihood of an issue (like cortisol in our overly stressed culture). Since there are so many hormones that can become dysregulated, presenting with a wide variety of symptoms, many of the symptoms are written off to aging and never addressed. In this episode of The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru takes a deep dive into the topic of hormonal imbalances with Dr. Sara Gottfried, along with what you can do to get them back on track. Dr. Sara Gottfried is a board-certified physician who graduated from Harvard and MIT. She practices evidence-based integrative, precision, and Functional Medicine. She is Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences at Thomas Jefferson University, and Director of Precision Medicine at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health. Her three New York Times bestselling books include The Hormone Cure, The Hormone Reset Diet, and Younger. Her latest book is Women, Food, and Hormones. In this episode, we dive into: -Common hormone imbalances that have become normalized in society (7:25) -Signs and symptoms of hormone imbalances (11:35) -Dr. Gottfried’s personal journey of learning how to balance her hormones (20:25) -The top 3 things to prioritize when addressing hormone imbalances (34:46) -Understanding the unique biology of women when it comes to balancing hormones (44:12) -How to uncover the root cause of hormone imbalances (50:10) -How chronic cardio negatively impacts cortisol levels (58:39) -The top 3 mistakes when it comes to diet and how it impacts our hormones (1:05:59) -How to improve metabolic flexibility (1:10:11) -The key pillars of The Gottfried Protocol (1:23:21) Also mentioned in this episode: -Breathing Zone App - https://breathing.zone/ -Perceived Stress Scale Test - https://www.bemindfulonline.com/test-your-stress -Continuous Glucose Monitors - -Levels - levels.link/dhru -January AI - https://january.ai -ZOE - https://joinzoe.com/ -NutriSense - https://www.nutrisense.io/ -Abbott - https://www.abbott.com/ -Dexcom - https://www.dexcom.com/ -Keto-Mojo (ketone and glucose monitor) - https://keto-mojo.com/ For more on Dr. Gottfried you can follow her on Instagram @saragottfriedmd, on Facebook @drgottfried, on Twitter @gottfriedsara, on YouTube @drgottfried, and through her website https://www.saragottfriedmd.com. S2 Ep 32#237: 3 Steps to Reverse Autoimmune Disease with Dr. Terry Wahls

3 Steps to Reverse Autoimmune Disease | This episode is brought to you by BLUblox and Paleovalley. In health and medicine, we must always be willing to look deeper. We can’t give up on looking for healing solutions just because we’ve always been told a disease is progressive and incurable. That’s one of the many reasons I’m so inspired by today’s guest on The Dhru Purohit Podcast. Dr. Terry Wahls received a diagnosis of secondary progressive multiple sclerosis and, instead of accepting a rapid decline in her function and quality of life, dove headfirst into looking for answers with long-lasting results. Dr. Wahls didn’t buy into the limits defined by her diagnosis and has completely changed the future of MS research and treatment options in the process. Dr. Terry Wahls is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa where she conducts clinical trials. In 2018, she was awarded the Institute for Functional Medicine’s Linus Pauling Award for her contributions in research, clinical care, and patient advocacy. Dr. Wahls was confined to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years. She restored her health using a diet and lifestyle program she designed specifically for her brain and now pedals her bike to work each day. She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles, and the cookbook The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life. In this episode, we dive into: -Dr. Wahls’ story of being diagnosed with MS and how her transformation happened (7:42) -How conventional medicine looks at health and disease vs. Functional Medicine (16:13) -How to uncover the root cause of an autoimmune condition (23:01) -The role toxin exposure plays when it comes to autoimmune conditions (34:30) -Signs that an autoimmune condition is brewing (39:06) -The first thing to think about when addressing an autoimmune condition (41:13) -How eating 9+ cups of vegetables a day had a huge role in turning around Dr. Wahls’ health (51:38) -The healing benefits of organ meats (59:51) -Practical ways to increase vegetable consumption (1:09:45) -What role anti-nutrients might play when it comes to autoimmune conditions (1:12:09) -What Dr. Wahls’ diet looks like on a daily basis (1:16:27) -The power of movement when it comes to healing an autoimmune condition (1:23:27) -Figuring out your why as you begin your healing journey (1:33:10) Also mentioned in this episode: -The Autoimmune Intervention Mastery Course - https://terrywahls.com/aim/ -Radical Health Upgrade Program - https://terrywahls.com/radicalhealthupgrade/ -Conquer Your Autoimmune Condition - Free Five Day Challenge - https://terrywahls.com/5daychallenge/ -Defying All Odds Documentary - https://defyingalloddsmovie.vhx.tv/checkout/defying-all-odds-72-mins/purchase?code=wahlsrecoveryjourneyaug2021 -US Wellness Meats - Organs and Organ Sausages - https://grasslandbeef.com/organs-organ-sausages -MS Clinical Trials - https://wahls.lab.uiowa.edu/ For more on Dr. Wahls you can follow her on Instagram @drterrywahls, on Facebook @terrywahls, on Twitter @terrywahls, on YouTube @terrywahls, and through her website https://terrywahls.com. S2 Ep 30#236: How Poor Metabolic Health Allows Covid-19 to Hijack Our System with Dr. Ronesh Sinha

How Poor Metabolic Health Allows Covid-19 to Hijack Our System | This episode is brought to you by HigherDOSE and BiOptimzers. When we think about Covid-19 and our health and well-being, there are many factors to consider. It’s not just about the general idea of immunity; we need to understand that multiple processes within the body can either make us more resilient against or more susceptible to this specific virus. Metabolic health is a big part of this. When we look at who is most vulnerable to Covid-19, we see that among the immuno-compromised and elderly there is also a population with major metabolic risk factors. That means insulin resistance, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, obesity, hypertension, and more. Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru talks to Dr. Ronesh Sinha about the key areas we can focus on to optimize our metabolic health and how they specifically relate to decreasing our risk of severe outcomes from Covid-19. Dr. Sinha, author of The South Asian Health Solution, is an internal medicine physician who runs a lifestyle clinic in Silicon Valley focused on reversing insulin resistance in ethnically diverse patients. He is also an expert in corporate wellness and serves as the Chief Medical Officer for Silicon Valley Employer Forum where he serves as a global adviser to shape health benefits for over 55 major Silicon Valley companies. His groundbreaking work in corporate wellness and raising awareness about insulin resistance in the Asian population has received global attention with front cover stories in Fortune Magazine and the LA Times. Dr. Sinha blogs actively on health at culturalhealthsolutions.com and recently launched the Meta Health podcast where he uses creative storytelling to teach listeners about health and metabolism. In this episode, we dive into: -How metabolic health relates to Covid-19 (9:21) -What is metabolic health (13:24) -How Covid-19 can hijack metabolic health (15:41) -How poor metabolic health and insulin resistance can make someone more likely to get Covid-19 (19:57) -Vaccination and severe Covid-19 risk (22:21) -Children, metabolic health, and Covid-19 (31:12) -The ABCDS to better metabolic health (42:28) -Lab tests for metabolic health (1:02:05) Also mentioned in this episode: -Free Covid-19 Survival Guide - https://www.culturalhealthsolutions.com/covid-19-resources/ -A Grim Warning from Israel: Vaccination Blunts, but Does Not Defeat Delta https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2021/08/grim-warning-israel-vaccination-blunts-does-not-defeat-delta -Underlying Medical Conditions and Severe Illness Among Adults Hospitalized with Covid Study - https://www.cdc.gov/pcd/issues/2021/21_0123.htm -Deaths in Children and Adolescents Associated With Covid-19 and MIS-C in the United States - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34385349/ -NPR article about citizen scientist - https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2021/08/06/1025553638/how-a-gay-community-helped-the-cdc-spot-a-covid-outbreak-and-learn-more-about-de For more on Dr. Ronesh you can follow him on Instagram @roneshsinhamd, on Facebook @southasiansolution, on Twitter @roneshsinha, on YouTube @roneshsinha, and through his website https://www.culturalhealthsolutions.com/. S2 Ep 28#235: The Latest Science on the Link Between Cancer and Cell Phones with Dr. Devra Davis

The Latest Science on the Link Between Cancer and Cell Phones | This episode is brought to you by BLUblox and Paleovalley. Technology has done amazing things for us. It keeps us connected and can provide invaluable information about our health, but it could also be hurting our health without our even realizing it. Electromagnetic frequencies, or EMFs, are actually all around us in the natural world, like the build up of electricity during a thunderstorm or the Earth’s magnetic field that animals use for migration. The problem is that man-made electrical devices like cell phones, Wi-Fi, computers, and microwaves, emit EMFs and have dramatically increased our exposure. EMFs have been classified as a Group 2B possible human carcinogen by the World Health Organization and research continues to reveal their negative impact on human health, due to interference with our internal cell membrane function, resulting in free radical production, DNA damage, and lower antioxidant levels. On today’s episode of The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Devra Davis an internationally acclaimed award-winning scientist and author of more than 220 scientific publications and 3 popular books, including When Smoke Ran Like Water, The Secret History of the War on Cancer, and Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation. Dr. Davis was formerly a professor at the University of Pittsburgh and was the founding director of the world’s first Center for Environmental Oncology. She is currently the President and founder of the Environmental Health Trust, a non-profit scientific organization focusing on drawing attention to man-made health threats. Ehtrust.org is considered a major resource for those wanting to learn more about environmental toxins and about the current push to depend on 5G and 5G towers. In this episode, we dive into: -The connection between EMFs, cell phone radiation, and cancer (8:06) -EMFs impact on fertility (18:59) -How EMF exposure to kids is different from adults (29:03) -How electronic devices are tested for safety (34:28) -Speech delay acquisition and technology (37:37) -How the EPA, FDA, and FCC are being hijacked by the telecom industry (44:40) -What motivated Dr. Davis to get involved in this work (56:23) -How cellphones can cause brain damage to children (58:40) -What you can do to mitigate the damaging effects of EMFs (1:01:02) -The dangers of Bluetooth headsets (1:13:17) -Electromagnetic illness (1:19:02) -California and 5G infrastructure (1:24:37) Also mentioned in this episode: -Effects of Cell Phone Radiofrequency Signal Exposure on Brain Glucose Metabolism - https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/64581 -Evidence of Health Risks Linked to Electromagnetic Field Exposure - https://divisionofresearch.kaiserpermanente.org/pressrelease?Id=4467 -Safe and Sound PRO RF Meter - https://amzn.to/3Devtq5 -Rat Park: How a Rat Paradise Changed the Narrative of Addiction - https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/add.14481 -Americans for Responsible Technology - https://www.americansforresponsibletech.org/tool-kit -Patreon Group - https://www.patreon.com/ehtrust For more on Dr. Davis you can follow her on Instagram @ehtrust, on Facebook @ehtrust, on Twitter @saferphones, and through her website https://ehtrust.org/. S2 Ep 26#234: How Leaky Gut is Making Us Sick and Driving Chronic Inflammation with Dr. Emeran Mayer

How Leaky Gut is Making Us Sick and Driving Chronic Inflammation | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers and ButcherBox. Over the last seventy-five years, an array of serious, seemingly unrelated chronic illnesses—cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, autoimmune disorders, cancer, and brain disorders—have all been steadily rising, some at astonishing rates. While we’re living dramatically longer lives, many of us are suffering throughout them, creating a public health crisis of historic scale. A key principle of Functional Medicine is looking at the gut and how it impacts the entire body. All of the diseases mentioned above have a component of gut dysfunction, especially intestinal permeability, which is also known as leaky gut syndrome. When the digestive tract is inflamed and food particles are able to make their way into the bloodstream, the body goes into fight mode. This goes far beyond a stomach ache, as symptoms can occur throughout the whole body. On today’s episode of The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Emeran Mayer, the author of The Gut-Immune Connection and The Mind-Gut Connection. He has studied brain-body interactions for the last forty years and is the executive director of the G. Oppenheimer Center for Neurobiology of Stress and Resilience, and the founding director of the UCLA Brain Gut Microbiome Center at the University of California at Los Angeles. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health for the past twenty-five years, and he is considered a pioneer and world leader in the area of brain-gut microbiome interactions and its clinical implications. In this episode, we dive into: -Industrial agriculture, antibiotics, and the implications on human health (5:35) -The connection between the overuse of antibiotics and weight gain (12:17) -How our gut bacteria evolved (17:02) -The intelligence of our gut bacteria (27:03) -How modern pesticides wreak havoc on our gut health (33:46) -How fermented foods increase microbiome diversity and lower inflammation (39:26) -The importance of diversity in our diet (51:19) -Why there is a prevalence of food sensitivity in our diet (53:12) -How to figure out what foods are negatively impacting your gut health (1:03:09) -How sleep impacts the gut microbiome (1:13:12) -The gut-immune connection (1:19:15) -Chronic disease epidemic and the susceptibility to infectious diseases like COVID-19 (1:24:40) Also mentioned in this episode: -A Fermented-Food Diet Increases Microbiome Diversity and Lowers Inflammation - https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2021/07/fermented-food-diet-increases-microbiome-diversity-lowers-inflammation -Missing Microbes: How the Overuse of Antibiotics is Fueling Our Modern Plagues by Martin Blaser - https://www.amazon.com/Missing-Microbes-Overuse-Antibiotics-Fueling/dp/0805098100 For more on Dr. Mayer you can follow him on Instagram @emeranmayer, on Facebook @emeranamayer, on Twitter @emeranamayer, and through his website https://emeranmayer.com/. Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most significant global health threats we face today. It is an ailment that, as our population ages, is forecasted to become a worldwide epidemic. S2 Ep 23Energy: The Missing Link to Heal Your Body and Mind with Dr. John Amaral (Rebroadcast)

We live in a hyper-connected world, but more people are more disconnected than ever before. Why? It’s easier than ever to get out of sync with the natural rhythms of our energy and spend the majority of life in a fight-or-flight state. It’s partly because of technology and screen time and because of a lack of integrated movement throughout the day. It’s largely because people just don’t know how to connect and find flow—that optimal state of being where we are one with our body and the universe and where we feel and perform at our very best. On today’s episode of The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru talks to Dr. John Amaral, a chiropractor, author and educator who has worked behind-the-scenes helping A-List celebrities, entrepreneurs, athletes, influencers and thought-leaders elevate their energy so that they feel and perform their best. Dr. Amaral helps his clients self-heal physical injuries, reduce stress, anxiety and depression, and stay in the energetic flow amidst the challenges of everything from running enterprises to pushing the envelope of human performance. He is also the founder of Body Centered Leadership, a program that combines cutting-edge neuroscience, quantum physics principles and ancient wisdom practices to help participants create and sustain new levels of energy, clarity, and fulfillment. Dr. Amaral is featured in the recent GOOP Lab Netflix series with Gwyneth Paltrow. In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Amaral talk about how disconnection from our inner world is caused by internalization, and how many of us don’t communicate our true feelings with the people we interact with in our day-to-day lives, often for fear of what they might think of us. They discuss how physical pain can be related to emotional stagnation, and how we can release stored stress, pain, and trauma from our body. They also talk about how to make a true connection with ourselves through the natural rhythms of our body and energy. In this episode, we dive into: -What is our energy field and what makes it thrive or not -How disconnection from our inner world can create stress, pain, and trauma in our body -How we release tension and energy from our body -How to change our conditioned patterns -What the pain we experience in our body really means -How unexpressed emotion can lead to dis-ease in the body -What the messages your get from your body mean and what happens when you ignore them Also mentioned in this episode: -7-day Fight-or-Flight to Flow Challenge - https://johnamaral.com/7-day-challenge/. -Netflix Series: Goop Lab Episode 5: The Energy Experience - https://goop.com/energy-healing/ For more on Dr. John Amaral you can follow him on Instagram @drjohnamaral, on Facebook @drjohnamaral, on Twitter @johnamaral, on YouTube @johnamaral, and through his website https://johnamaral.com/. S2 Ep 22#232: Top Healthy Foods That Prevent & Treat Autoimmune Disease with Dr. Elroy Vojdani

Top Healthy Foods That Prevent & Treat Autoimmune Disease | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers. Autoimmune diseases are a huge issue, affecting over 80 million Americans. They include type 1 diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, colitis, Crohn’s disease, and dozens of others, but they all have one thing in common—the body attacks itself. Conventional medicine uses pharmaceutical drugs to treat autoimmune disease but fails to answer one simple question: Why is the body out of balance to begin with, and how do we help it regain the proper balance? Functional Medicine, on the other hand, applies a personalized approach to treating autoimmune disease providing a map to find the root cause underlying autoimmune disease. On today’s episode of The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Elroy Vojdani, the founder of Regenera Medical, a boutique Functional Medicine practice in Los Angeles, California. Upon graduating medical school from the University of Southern California and completing his residency at USC Keck School of Medicine, Dr. V began his career as an Interventional Radiologist, diagnosing and treating complex, late-stage cancers and other extremely debilitating diseases. While this experience gave him unique insights into hospital-based medicine, his desire to stop disease before it reached the point of becoming a chronic illness remained at the core of his desire to practice medicine. Today, he continues in his father’s footsteps–pioneering to find answers to medical conditions that go undiagnosed and untreated. Dr. Vojdani has co-authored over 20 articles in the scientific literature and continues an integral role in research related to autoimmune, neurodegenerative, and autoinflammatory conditions. He is also the co-author of a medical textbook entitled Food Associated Autoimmunity. In this episode, we dive into: -Why there is an explosion of autoimmune diseases (7:41) -The connection between food and autoimmune diseases (15:06) -What is leaky gut (18:43) -Foods that damage the gut lining (23:35) -Modern wheat vs. native wheat (27:35) -The three stages of autoimmunity (50:57) -Immunotyping and why it’s the next step in personalized medicine (55:10) -How to prevent and treat autoimmune conditions (1:11:06) -How lectins can be connected to certain autoimmune conditions (1:17:25) -Foods that can be healing for autoimmune conditions (1:23:51) -How chronic viral infections can be a gateway for autoimmune conditions (1:33:27) Also mentioned in this episode -The Impact of Functional Medicine on Patient-Reported Outcomes in Inflammatory Arthritis - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33031458/ -Cyrex Labs - Lymphocyte MAP Comprehensive Immunotyping of Lymphocytes - https://www.cyrexlabs.com/CyrexTestsArrays -Vojdani University - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCT7uP1RpyHJ6R1BY4V7Km5Q/videos For more on Dr. Elroy Vojdani you can follow him on Instagram @regeneramedical, on Facebook @regeneramedical, on Twitter @regeneramedical, and through his website https://www.regeneramedical.com/. S2 Ep 21The Science of Movement: How to Use Exercise to Defeat Depression, Anxiety, and Loneliness with Dr. Kelly McGonigal (Rebroadcast)

The most common explanation for why exercise makes us happy is far too simplistic. The psychological effects of movement cannot be reduced to an endorphin rush. Physical activity influences many other brain chemicals, including those that give you energy, alleviate worry, and help you bond with others. It reduces inflammation in the brain, which over time can protect against depression, anxiety, and loneliness. Regular exercise also remodels the physical structure of your brain to make you more receptive to joy and social connection. These neurological changes rival those observed in the most cutting-edge treatments for both depression and addiction. On today’s episode of The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru talks to Dr. Kelly McGonigal, a health psychologist who specializes in understanding the mind-body connection. She is the bestselling author of The Willpower Instinct and The Upside of Stress. Her latest book, The Joy of Movement, explores why physical exercise is a powerful antidote to the modern epidemics of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. In this episode, Dhru and Kelly talk about how exercise can improve the treatment outcomes for depression, anxiety, and addiction. They discuss the science of why people who are regularly active have a stronger sense of purpose, experience more gratitude, love and hope, feel more connected to their communities, and are less likely to suffer from loneliness or become depressed. They also talk about how during physical activity, muscles secrete hormones into our bloodstream that make our brain more resilient to stress, which scientists call “hope molecules.” In this episode, we dive into: -The moment that changed Kelly’s life -The connection between joy and movement -How exercise can help with mental health -How to get past the mental barriers when it comes to movement and exercise -The role movement plays when it comes to loneliness -Why the so-called “Runner’s High” is more than just an endorphin rush, and how it helps to reduce inflammation in the brain -How exercise teaches us to be better at stress -Why you should set a goal that involves movement, not just weight loss -How exercise enhances healing For more on Dr. Kelly McGonigal, you can follow her on Instagram @kellymariemcgonigal, on Facebook @kellymcgonigalauthor, and through her website http://kellymcgonigal.com/. S2 Ep 20#231: Avoid These Risk Factors to Prevent Brain Inflammation with Dr. Datis Kharrazian

Avoid These Risk Factors to Prevent Brain Inflammation | This episode is brought to you by Cozy Earth and Paleovalley. For a long time, brain fatigue and a lack of cognitive endurance were just considered a normal part of aging. These issues are actually symptoms of a much larger problem, though—neuroinflammation—and they aren’t inevitable. Our brains naturally create cellular debris as we age. A healthy brain with the right anti-inflammatory and antioxidant systems in place can clean up this debris using a process called autophagy. But when those systems become compromised through a variety of insults, like insulin resistance, toxicity, and lack of sleep, the debris piles up and neurodegeneration and inflammation result. Taking the right steps now can prevent and even reverse an inflamed brain. On today’s episode, Dhru talks to Dr. Datis Kharrazian about the principles of health that protect and optimize our brain function. Dr. Kharrazian is a clinical research scientist, academic professor, and a Functional Medicine health care provider. He is an Associate Clinical Professor at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School, and a researcher at the Department of Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Kharrazian earned a PhD degree in Health Science with concentrations in immunology and toxicology and a Doctor of Health Science degree from Nova Southeastern University. He completed his post-doctoral research training at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Kharrazian earned a Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport, a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Southern California University of Health Sciences, and a Master of Medical Sciences degree in Clinical Investigation from Harvard Medical School. In this episode, we dive into: -The link between diabetes and Alzheimer’s (6:58) -What is neuroinflammation and what causes it (11:29) -The earliest signs of neuroinflammation (14:10) -Conditions that are tied to neuroinflammation (16:56) -The impact of air pollution on our brain (19:32) -Dr. Kharrazian’s recommendations to maintain healthier indoor air quality (23:12) -How poor sleep can drive neuroinflammation (33:08) -What role glial cells—the brain’s immune cells—play in neuroinflammation, and what it means when they are primed (48:52) -Why gluten is one of the most inflammatory foods for the brain (59:52) -Molecular mimicry and how it can drive autoimmunity (1:10:14) Also mentioned in this episode: -Save Your Brain Online Course - https://drknews.com/save-your-brain/ -Kharrazian Institute - https://kharrazianinstitute.com/ -Earlier Diabetes Onset Could Raise Dementia Risk - https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/03/well/mind/diabetes-dementia-Alzheimers.htm -Reaction of Human Monoclonal Antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 Proteins with Tissue Antigens: Implications for Autoimmune Diseases - https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fimmu.2020.617089/full -Top 10 Reasons Why Autoimmune Patients Don’t Get Better - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAXZRVTpdOs -The Total Exposure Assessment Methodology EPA Study - https://bit.ly/3j9k95x -How to Grow Fresh Air - https://www.ted.com/talks/kamal_meattle_how_to_grow_fresh_air For more on Dr. Kharrazian you can follow him on Instagram @datiskharrazian, on Facebook @datiskharrazianpage, on YouTube @datiskharrazian, and through his website https://drknews.com/. Should Kids Get a COVID-19 Vaccine? with Pediatrician | This episode is brought to you by Cozy Earth and BiOptimizers. COVID-19 has challenged us like never before. The past year has been full of uncertainties and we continue to face decisions around vaccines, a changing social landscape, and how to protect our families and maintain our quality of life. The best we can do is stay informed on the constantly evolving research and take into account our family’s unique needs. Parents of young children have the added responsibility of making decisions for them, with limited data. No one can tell you what the right choice is when it comes to getting your child vaccinated. Dhru and Dr. Song have a grounded conversation about what we know and what we still need to find out. They hash out what can be a pretty overwhelming topic into digestible information to help you feel empowered. Dr. Song is an integrative pediatrician, pediatric Functional Medicine expert, and mama. In her integrative pediatric practice, Whole Family Wellness, she’s helped 1,000s of kids get to the root causes of their health concerns and helped their parents understand how to help their children thrive in body, mind, and spirit by integrating conventional pediatrics with Functional Medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and essential oils. Dr. Song created Healthy Kids Happy Kids, an online holistic pediatric resource to help practitioners and parents bridge the gap between conventional and integrative pediatrics with an evidence-based, pediatrician-backed approach. S2 Ep 15#228: How To Prepare Our Bodies and Minds for The NEXT Pandemic with Dr. Austin Perlmutter

How To Prepare Our Bodies and Minds for The NEXT Pandemic | This episode is brought to you by BLUblox. Chronic diseases are the top risk factors for death and disability today. They’re also among the top risk factors for having worse outcomes from COVID-19. This implies that much of our risk for worse outcomes from this virus is a reflection of the choices we’ve made in the years and months leading up to the pandemic. In many ways, the stage was set for this pandemic long ago, because it’s not just about the virus—it’s also about the host, and we were already compromised from an immune perspective before COVID-19 existed. This means that we have an opportunity to start making the necessary changes to our physiology, so that we’re better prepared for the next pandemic. On today’s episode of The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Austin Perlmutter, a board-certified internal medicine physician and New York Times bestselling author. He received his medical degree from the University of Miami and completed his internal medicine residency at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland Oregon. His focus is on helping identify and resolve the biological basis for "stuckness" in the body and brain, especially around decision-making. He hosts the Get The STUCK OUT podcast and is a co-producer of the Alzheimer's - The Science of Prevention Docu-series. His writing is featured online on MedPage Today, Doximity, KevinMD, Medium, Psychology Today, MindBodyGreen, and DrPerlmutter.com. He is the author of a recent review paper on the interfaces between immune function, depression, and COVID-19. In this episode, we dive into: -How our epidemic of chronic diseases have predisposed us to worse outcomes from COVID-19 (4:34) -The importance of moving away from reactivity to solve our problems (12:03) -The intersection of COVID-19 and depression (16:02) -What’s underlying depression (20:27) -Dr. Perlmutter’s personal experience with anxiety and depression (25:52) -The connection between immune health and mental health (36:18) -How to support and enhance our immune system (45:50) -The importance of cutting out unnecessary stress (50:16) -The power of psilocybin and other psychedelic medicines for getting your brain unstuck (1:06:49) For more on Dr. Austin Perlmutter you can follow him on Instagram @austinperlmutter, on Facebook @austinperlmuttermd, on Twitter @austinperlmd, on YouTube @austinperlmuttermd, and through his website https://www.austinperlmutter.com/. Join here: http://levels.link/dhru Obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and Alzheimer’s disease all have one big thing in common—they all involve a component of blood sugar dysregulation. So many other diseases do, too. Considering the rampant use of sugar and flour in our food supply, managing blood sugar is something we should all be thinking about if we want to protect or improve our health. Thanks to technological advances like continuous glucose monitoring, we can now understand how we respond to carbohydrates like never before. For one person, a sweet potato might be easy to handle metabolically. For another, it could mean a giant rise and fall of blood sugar with a corresponding insulin spike. Some of the foods you might assume are healthy may even be the worst offenders. Today, Dhru takes a deep dive into blood sugar regulation and precision nutrition with Dr. Casey Means. Dr. Means is a Stanford-trained physician, Chief Medical Officer and Co-founder of metabolic health company Levels, an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention, and a Lecturer at Stanford University. Reprogram Your Brain to Destroy Laziness and Improve Focus | This episode is brought to you by BLUblox. At one point or another, we’ve all felt stuck in a rut with feelings of laziness and fear. During these times it can be really hard to take a step back and wonder what’s happening in the body, as opposed to just the mind, but it’s the link between the two that can push us through it. Neurotransmitters have some incredible power over how we function. Dopamine is responsible for craving, motivation, and pursuit. Adrenaline relates to agitation and endurance. Serotonin helps us be grateful and feel good about what we have. And acetylcholine can help us focus. This is just a snapshot of the chemical symphony happening in our bodies all the time, and we can actually leverage these inner reactions to better understand the way we react to the world around us and make positive changes. Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru talks to Dr. Andrew Huberman about opening the window into our neurochemistry, training the nervous system, and confronting our inner real estate. Dr. Andrew Huberman is a neuroscientist and tenured Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He has made numerous important contributions to the fields of brain development, brain function, and neural plasticity, which is the ability of our nervous system to rewire and learn new behaviors, skills, and cognitive functioning. Dr. Huberman is a McKnight Foundation and Pew Foundation Fellow and was awarded the Cogan Award in 2017, which is given to the scientist making the largest discoveries in the study of vision. His lab’s most recent work focuses on the influence of vision and respiration on human performance and brain states such as fear and courage. Work from the Huberman Laboratory at Stanford University School of Medicine has been published in top journals including Nature, Science, and Cell and has been featured in TIME, BBC, Scientific American, Discover, and other top media outlets. In this episode, we dive into: -The connection between fear, laziness, and motivation (4:56) -The difference between dopamine, adrenaline, and serotonin (17:50) -How to increase dopamine (19:12) -How to get your mind to stop racing (31:14) -An exercise to try if you are having a hard time falling asleep (35:47) -The benefits of hypnosis (38:57) -What to do if you are having trouble focusing (52:47) -Why structure is one of the best ways to create freedom (1:01:32) -How our phones are eroding our creativity, relationships, and more (1:05:52) -The importance of having times of no focus each day (1:16:39) For more on Dr. Andrew Huberman, you can follow him on Instagram @hubermanlab, and through his website http://www.hubermanlab.com/. S2 Ep 7#222: 7 Ways to Protect Your Brain from Harmful Electromagnetic Radiation (Especially at Night!)

Welcome to The Big Idea of the Week! On today’s episode of The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru shares 7 tips for protecting your brain from harmful electromagnetic radiation. (1) Don’t plug your cell phone into the wall next to your bed when you sleep. Ideally, put it on the opposite side of the room. (2) Don’t leave anything else plugged in next to your head, bed or night stand. This includes an alarm clock, lamp, lights, or any other device that plugs into a wall. Anything plugged into a wall emits some amount of dirty electricity and for a lot of people that’s where the bulk of their EMF exposure comes from. (3) Avoid using your laptop or cell phone while it’s charging. (4) Avoid sleeping with your head or body near a wall that has an electric panel or electric appliance on the other side. (5) If you have kids remember their brains are smaller, remove any devices that are plugged in their rooms next to their beds. Their skulls aren’t as thick as adults, so they are at greater risk. (6) Turn your Wi-Fi off at night and if you can’t, don’t have your Wi-Fi in your room at night when you sleep. This goes for Wi-Fi routers or extenders. (7) Consider using an earthing mat for your bed. A Functional Medicine Approach to Treating Crohn’s and Colitis | This episode is brought to you by Birch Living and InsideTracker. We see it all the time in Functional Medicine: when the gut isn’t functioning properly, the whole body suffers. For those struggling with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, the symptoms can be so severe that every day is painful and filled with uncertainty. Luckily, by taking away instigators (like gluten and dairy) and looking at the ingredients needed for healing, patients with IBDs can regain digestive balance and take back their quality of life. Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru talks to Nishtha Patel about her experience in helping her daughter heal from Crohn’s colitis, which is when Crohn’s disease specifically impacts the colon. Symptoms of this disorder range from diarrhea and rectal bleeding to ulcers, fistulas, abscesses, joint pain, and skin lesions. Not to mention, most people dealing with IBDs carry very real emotional burdens as well. Nishtha Patel is a Functional Medicine practitioner and clinical nutritionist who specializes in gastrointestinal health. S2 Ep 3#220: The Power of Hitting Rock Bottom and Where to Go Next with Dr. Shefali

The Power of Hitting Rock Bottom and Where to Go Next | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers. Throughout my years of soul-searching, meditating, and contemplating life, I’ve learned one really big lesson: we’re in control of our own experience and reality. Our mindset will dictate what we deem true and real, but as humans, our egos can creep in and blur the lines. We get lost between what we need to be our authentic selves and what society or other people say we need in order to be worthy. Unfortunately, that lie of unworthiness has seeped into many of our lives and taken away our power. Today’s guest on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dr. Shefali Tsabury, is here to talk about reclaiming consciousness and empowerment, especially as women in a patriarchal world. Dr. Shefali received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Columbia University. Specializing in the integration of Western psychology and Eastern philosophy, she brings together the best of both worlds for her clients. She is an expert in family dynamics and personal development, teaching courses around the globe. She has written four books, three of which are New York Times bestsellers, including her two landmark books The Conscious Parent and The Awakened Family. Oprah has endorsed her work as revolutionary and life-changing. On today’s episode Dr. Shefali and Dhru talk about her new book, A Radical Awakening and specifically explore its central topics around how women can break free of explicit and implicit expectations that society has placed on them. Dr. Shefali shares her experience of awakening from the fog so many women find themselves in when only identifying as wives, mothers, or a slew of other labels that aren’t their true essence. In this episode, we dive into: -Dr. Shefali’s radical awakening (5:10) -Where unworthiness comes from (11:51) -Victim vs. victimhood (18:50) -Empowerment and taking control of your own emotional experiences (21:07) -Understanding consciousness and ego (25:40) -Why hitting rock bottom is a gift (30:26) -Why we get stuck in the blame game (38:07) -Breaking free from victimized consciousness and challenging cultural norms (41:47) -The lies about marriage and divorce (58:10) -What it looks like to have a benevolent partnership (1:02:30) For more on Dr. Shefali you can follow her on Instagram @DoctorShefali, on Facebook @DrShefaliTsabary, on Twitter @DrShefali, on YouTube @DrShefali, and through her website https://www.drshefali.com. #216: How to Tap into Your Gut Intuition and Tune Out Society’s Noise and Expectations with Light Watkins

How to Tap into Your Gut Intuition and Tune Out Society’s Noise and Expectations | This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market and BiOptimizers. We’re all on our own paths of learning which inner voice to follow. There’s usually the one urging us to take the easy option, but there’s also the (often quieter) inner voice nudging us to stretch ourselves and take on a challenge. Have you ever felt a little scared but also excited about a new endeavor? That inner guide is trying to help you grow. Like everything in life, it can take some time and practice to be in touch with our intuition and benefit from it. But just like with working out, we have to get a little uncomfortable and put in the energy if we want to get stronger—it’s true for both body and mind. This week on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru has a thoughtful conversation with our friend Light Watkins, all about finding that inner guide, sharing inspiration, reframing our perception of good and bad, and giving ourselves permission to let things go. Light has been operating in the meditation space since 1998, first as a practitioner, then as an apprentice to his Vedic Meditation teacher, and finally as a teacher himself. E

Regardless of what we want to accomplish, from growing your business, creating a great company culture, championing a social cause, or affecting your habits, we can’t do it alone. The people around you define your success (whatever that means for you) and they have the potential to change the course of your life. Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru talks to Jon Levy, a behavioral scientist best known for his work in influence, human connection, and decision making. Jon specializes in applying the latest research to transform the ways companies approach marketing, sales, consumer engagement, and culture. His clients range from Fortune 500 brands to startups. More than a decade ago, Jon founded The Influencers Dinner, a secret dining experience for industry leaders ranging from Nobel laureates, Olympians, celebrities, and executives, to artists, musicians, and even the occasional princess. Guests cook dinner together but can’t discuss their career or give their last name, and once seated to eat, they play a game to reveal who they are. #208: Rethinking God, Sex, and Death in a World That’s Lost Its Mind with Jamie Wheal

E

If you’re looking for a way to explore the concept of meaning, how it relates to culture, religion, politics, history, sexuality, dissatisfaction, and so much more, this podcast is for you. We’re currently experiencing a crisis of meaning. People and groups are divided, each convinced their way of thinking and their beliefs are the “right” ones. We have a hard time letting multiple things be true at the same time, when in reality they are but all of our realities are different. We get weighed down by the complexities of information overload and experience grief in the process. Since most of us run from bad feelings or simply don’t know how to address them, we go into denial and look for an escape. We end up with more anxiety, more depression, and poorer relationships. But this isn’t an unstoppable progression. Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru talks to Jamie Wheal about why it’s so hard to make sense of the world right now and what we can do to help ourselves expand our understanding. They discuss the five key drivers that give us the tools to wake up, grow up, and show up for ourselves. They also talk about how we move from broken to whole, and how we cure isolation with connection. Jamie is the author of the global bestseller and Pulitzer Prize-nominated Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, Navy SEALs and Maverick Scientists are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work. Jamie is an expert in peak performance and leadership, specializing in neuroanthropology––the intersection of culture, biology, and psychology—and the founder of the Flow Genome Project, an international organization dedicated to the research and training of ultimate human performance. In this episode, we dive into: -Why we are in a crisis of meaning (3:12) -The current culture wars (34:35) -The apocalypse we find ourselves in (1:03:30) -The three things that help us deal with life better (1:06:20) -How to be inclusive (1:08:59) -Alchemy and personal transformation (1:36:44) -Why sexuality can be a powerful gateway into higher consciousness (1:37:43) -Orgasms as a treatment for depression (2:00:51) -How music connects us (2:19:52) -How to get out of our own way and create greater connection (2:54:30) Also mentioned in this episode: -The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk - https://www.amazon.com/Body-Keeps-Score-Healing-Trauma/dp/0143127748 -Love Drugs: The Chemical Future of Relationships by Brian Earp and Julian Savulescu - https://www.amazon.com/Love-Drugs-Chemical-Future-Relationships/dp/0804798192 -This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession by Daniel Levitin - https://www.amazon.com/This-Your-Brain-Music-Obsession/dp/0452288525 For more on Jamie Wheal you can follow him on Instagram @flowgenome, on Facebook @jamiewhealpage, on Twitter @flowgenome, and through his website https://www.flowgenomeproject.com/. #207: The Dangers of Fluoride on the Brain and IQ with Dr. Mark Burhenne

If we want to continue learning how to optimize health, we have to stay open to new information that might contradict previous research, even if it questions the status quo. Fluoride and dental health are great examples of this process. Fluoride gained support due to an observation one man made many years ago, which has progressed into many cities fluoridating their water and most dentists singing its praises. But over the years the research on fluoride has greatly evolved, to the point that we can now see large differences in how it works topically versus internally, and identify risks that come with consumption. Today’s guest on The Dhru Purohit Podcast spent much of his time as a new dentist and new parent grappling with whether it was a good idea to give fluoride to his kids. Dr. Mark Burhenne is a functional dentist, and the author of the #1 Amazon bestseller The 8-Hour Sleep Paradox. He has appeared in Dr. Hyman's Sleep Masterclass, the oral microbiome docuseries Gateway to Health, NPR, and many more. Dhru and Dr. Burhenne talk about the emerging research that supports connections between fluoride and IQ changes, neurotoxicity, arthritis, osteosarcomas, and changes in metabolism, among other concerns. Dr. Burhenne explains how fluoride works in the body, and why using it topically is very different than consuming it. They also talk about the root cause of cavities—it’s not a deficiency in fluoride, but the sugary and starchy foods making up the Standard American Diet, an altered oral microbiome, and mouth breathing. In this episode, we dive into: -What made Dr. Burhenne first question fluoride (3:24) -Why fluoride is added to our water (8:52) -Conventional dentistry and fluoride use (14:22) -Studies that show why we need to rethink adding fluoride to our water (21:47) -The EPA Federal lawsuit that could limit fluoride in drinking water (24:25) -The effects of fluoride on the brain (31:42) -How we get fluoride in water (35:29) -Why fluoride in toothpaste doesn’t really work (37:59) -How to choose a water filter (50:18) -Dr. Burhenne’s toothpaste recommendations (56:36) -What actually creates cavities and healthy teeth (1:05:02) -What we can learn from modern hunter-gatherers when it comes to dental health (1:11:22) Also mentioned in this episode: -The EPA Federal lawsuit that could limit fluoride in drinking water - https://www.ewg.org/news-insights/news/federal-lawsuit-could-limit-fluoride-drinking-water -Prenatal Fluoride Exposure and Cognitive Outcomes in Children at 4 and 6-12 Years of Age in Mexico - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28937959/ -The Association Between Maternal Fluoride Exposure During Pregnancy and IQ Scores in Offspring in Canada - https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/fullarticle/2748634 -Fluoride Action Network - http://fluoridealert.org/ -ZeroWater Filter - https://zerowater.com/ -RiseWell Toothpaste - https://risewell.com/ -Boka Oral Care - https://www.boka.com/ -The Secret to Better Sleep? #205: We Got it Wrong When it Comes to Weight Loss with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee

Our culture puts a lot of emphasis on blame when it comes to being overweight. People are villainized for being lazy or unaware of the “right” way. But there is no one right way to lose weight, and when we take steps to improve our overall wellness, weight loss comes as an added bonus. Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru talks to our good friend Dr. Rangan Chatterjee about creating a customized weight loss plan and digging into the real reasons we struggle with weight (hint: it’s not a lack of willpower). Dr. Chatterjee is regarded as one of the most influential medical doctors in the UK and wants to change how medicine will be practiced for years to come. His mission is to help 100 million people around the globe live better lives. He hosts the most listened to health podcast in the UK and Europe, Feel Better, Live More—which regularly tops the Apple Podcast charts and is listened to by over 2 million people every single month. Each of Dr. Chatterjee’s four books have been Sunday Times bestsellers including his latest, Feel Great, Lose Weight, which was just published in the US and Canada. In this episode, we dive into: -Getting off the blame game when it comes to weight loss (4:32) -Why what you eat might not be the most important thing when it comes to weight loss (24:14) -Eating behavior and stress response (29:44) -The connection between trauma and obesity (31:24) -Why we continue to eat foods that we know are sabotaging our efforts, despite our best intentions (38:06) -The Freedom Exercise to overcome cravings (43:26) -Foods that are hijacking our ability to make good decisions (49:21) -Why weight loss is not about willpower (52:51) -How food is engineered to be addictive (55:51) -How sleep impacts our eating habits (1:00:33) For more on Dr. Chatterjee you can follow him on Instagram @drchatterjee, on Facebook @drchatterjee, on Twitter @drchatterjeeuk, on YouTube @drranganchatterjee, and through his website https://drchatterjee.com/.
