Chiang, MD, explains why he brought his sizable social media following to Medtronic, where he serves as chief medical officer of the Gastrointestinal business. Chiang explains why he chose to couple the company’s broad platform with his own social media presence to reach more patients who may need treatment of gastrointestinal care. He also gives advice to other physicians who may want to amplify their own voices through social media.

DTW – How Baylis fits into Boston Scientific’s EP portfolio; also putting Medtech’s story to music

In this episode, Nick Spadea-Anello, Boston Scientific’s global president of electrophysiology, will explain how the $1.7 billion paid for Baylis Medical will help expand the Boston's extensive EP portfolio. Stereotaxis, Levita Magnetics make attractive cases for magnet-powered surgical robot systems

Get it? Attractive? Magnets. Yeh, we’ll, we’re tired from putting this monster podcast episode together but it’s so, so good. You’ll hear from David Fischel, CEO of Stereotaxis, a 30-plus year old medtech that’s going through a quiet but deliberate reboot. Fischel says he took the company over because Stereotaxis’ magnetic robotic surgery system makes interventional surgery safer, an assertion supported by Daniel Cooper, MD, associate professor at Washington University School of Medicine. Stereotaxis appears to be on the cusp of something big. Then, Alberto Rodriguez-Navarro, MD, tells us why he sold everything to move from his native Chile to move to Silicon Valley and start Levitra Magnetics. The company is anticipating FDA approval for its own robotic system that could help hospitals overcome staffing shortages during laparoscopic procedures. We’ll also hear our sponsor Futek explain how its miniaturized sensors are advancing robotic surgery. The Complete History of the Sapien TAVR – from PVT’s Emerging Idea to Edwards Lifesciences' Success

Edward Lifesciences’ acquisition of Percutaneous Valve Technologies helped mark the birth of one of medtech’s great game-changers – the development of the transcatheter aortic valve replacement. In this week’s episode, Stanton Rowe, the former CEO of PVT, will walk us through the early days of TAVR, including the enormous doubt the start-up faced as it developed the technology. He also explained how Edwards came to acquire the start-up, which had strong interest from Medtronic, Boston Scientific, and others. Rowe, who is now CEO of the NXT Biomedical incubator, also offers some provocative thoughts on the origins of medtech innovation (and explains why he misses medical device conferences.) Larry Wood, corporate vice president at Edwards Lifesciences, will explain why Edwards opted to pursue PVT rather than continue to develop its own TAVR technology. He also explains why the clinical trial testing of the valve now known as Sapien was so difficult and how he rewrote the compensation packages for his TAVR sales team to help build confidence in the new technology. Hear how pulse field ablation programs may revolutionize cardiac ablation treatment

New therapeutic approaches require fresh perspectives, and few perspectives were as fresh as Dr. Steven Mickelsen, the developer of a potentially paradigm shifting cardiac ablation treatment – pulse field ablation. Dr. Mickelsen, a high school dropout turned musician, fell deep enough in love with electrophysiology to go back to school, obtain a medical degree, and put his inclination to tinker to work in developing a new type of ablation. In this podcast we’ll walk down the path that led Dr. Mickelsen to create Farapulse, the early pioneer in this form of energy that now belongs to Boston Scientific. Dr. Mickelsen left the company a few years ago but he’s resumed his work helping Acutus Medical bring their technology to the market. He serves as that company’s chief translational science officer. In our second talk, we connect with Dr. Kenneth Stein, senior vice president and CMO of Boston Scientific’s cardiac rhythm management business. Dr. Stein allows us to pick up where Farapulse is leaving off, explaining why Boston Scientific bought the company now and what the plans are for the ablation systems, which has CE Mark but still requires FDA approval. Dr. Stein also shares advice for those physicians who may want to join a corporation. We also bring in Medtronic’s Rebecca Seidel, president of cardiac Ablation Solutions, and Dr. Robert Kowal, vice president of medical affairs and CMO at the cardiac rhythm and heart failure business.
