Des Moines Public Schools Approve First School Closure: Walnut Street School to Shut Down
The Des Moines Public Schools Board has approved the first school closure under the Reimagining Education plan, with Walnut Street School closing at the end of this school year. The decision comes after voters approved a $265 million bond in November to fund closures, upgrades, and new programs. Most students at Walnut Street come from other areas through open enrollment and will return to schools near their home addresses next year. Howe and Harding Elementary schools are also set to close in the coming years as part of the plan to consolidate resources at fewer buildings.
