Show Notes

Sister Mary Patricia Scherer, a beloved figure known as the Mother of Refugees in Des Moines, passed away at age ninety-two. For over three decades, she championed newcomers from Vietnam and beyond, helping thousands resettle through Catholic Charities and the Diocese of Des Moines refugee program. She taught religion at Dowling Catholic High School, bridging gaps for skeptical students meeting Southeast Asian families. Arriving in Des Moines in 1972, she formed the Sisters of the Christian Ministry and worked tirelessly to build lasting community ties. Her quiet persistence, respect for all faiths, and support for various groups earned her a place in the hearts of many. Visitation and services will be held from April 10th to 11th, with a burial at Glendale Cemetery. Her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she helped.
