Denvers New Grant Program: Combating Extreme Heat with Cooling Gear
Denver is stepping up its battle against extreme heat with a new grant program from the Office of Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency. The initiative offers up to $50,000 to community groups to distribute and set up cooling equipment like air conditioners and cold climate heat pumps in vulnerable neighborhoods. The program aims to help the elderly, those with health issues, low-income families, and residents in NEST areas. Applications are open until April 3rd, with winners announced later that month. As March temperatures soar, residents are enjoying outdoor activities, but worry about the upcoming summer. Last years effort saw hundreds of cooling units distributed to needy homes during four of the hottest summers in the past five years. Denver is also partnering for group buys on solar panels and heat pumps with bulk discounts and rebates.
