Republican Senator Jon Husted testified about attending a dinner with Ohio Governor-elect Mike DeWine and former FirstEnergy executives in December 2018. Husted, who joined remotely, had no knowledge of the executives plans to meet Sam Randazzo afterwards. DeWine appointed Randazzo to chair the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, despite him not being FirstEnergys top pick. The dinner is central to the trial of former CEO Chuck Jones and lobbyist Michael Dowling, accused of a sixty million dollar corruption scandal. Prosecutors allege the pair bribed Randazzo for favors, including a one billion dollar bailout for FirstEnergy-linked nuclear plants. Husted, who was Ohios lieutenant governor-elect at the time, is campaigning for re-election and faces Democrat Sherrod Brown. A warning dossier on Randazzos FirstEnergy ties was dismissed by DeWines team. Lobbyist Josh Rubin, who advised DeWines campaign, had texted the executives earlier that day on lobbying the governor-elect for their preferred commission chair. Randazzo, who died by suicide in April 2024, texted Dowling figures totaling four million three hundred thirty-three thousand three hundred thirty-three dollars and discussed invoice structures. The trial sheds new light on those pivotal early meetings and Ohios utility politics.
