Robert Fulton war ein Pionier der Unterseeschifffahrt. Napoleon allerdings fand Fultons U-Boot "Nautilus" eher "naja". Jules Verne nannte sein U-Boot in "20.000 Meilen unter dem Meer" Fulton zu Ehren "Nautilus".
