In the land where the whispers of the wind carried tales of dense forests, vast moorlands, and fertile fields, Anglo-Saxon Villagers, in small and close-knit villages that dotted the countryside, began to speak of their deep seated discontent at the crown for their handling of the Danes who lived in the Dane law. The rhythm of daily life was deeply tied to the land, life was a constant struggle to extract sustenance from the earth. The fields in the south and east, rich and bountiful, promised harvests that could stave off hunger, while the rugged north and west demanded resilience from those who herded sheep and cattle. The lay of the land had been irrevocably altered in the 9th century by the foundation of the Danelaw, an area of northern and eastern England where Danish rule was the law of the land. From London to Chester, the influence of the Norse settlers was palpable. Yorkshire, East Anglia, and the Five Boroughs—Derby, Leicester, Lincoln, Nottingham, and Stamford—were strongholds of Danish customs and governance. the Norse and Anglo-Saxon cultures mingled, creating a unique tapestry of traditions and laws and culminating in mass conversions from Nordic pagan beliefs into Christianity. At the heart of the Anglo-Saxon land King Æthelred II ruled. known as Æthelred the Unready His throne was less a seat of power and more a precarious perch atop a kingdom beset by challenges. The Viking menace loomed large, with fierce warriors from across the sea seeking to carve out their own dominions. The king’s reach extended only as far as the loyalty of his local earls, men who governed vast swathes of land, collected taxes, upheld the law, and commanded military might in his name. The realm was a patchwork of alliances and feuds, where the king’s word held sway only with the support of these powerful men. The relationship between Æthelred’s England and the Danelaw was a delicate balance of peace and tension. Periods of uneasy truce were punctuated by bursts of conflict, as the specter of Viking raids loomed large. In his efforts to bring the Danelaw into the fold, Æthelred often resorted to paying Danegeld, hefty sums meant to buy temporary peace from the Viking chieftains. Yet, these payments were but a bandage over a festering wound, as the regions under Danish influence maintained a semblance of independence, resisting full integration into the Anglo-Saxon kingdom. As the people and the nobility cried for a response to the threat posses by the Norseman, Æthelred responded but with one decision he doomed England to the wrath of Scandinavia. Front and backbenchers alike waited with bated breath as his piercing blue eyes scanned the room with unyielding intensity. Clad in his iconic dark suit, bow tie, and round spectacles, he took a drag from his famous cigar and uttered the words. “The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. These women, often wielding considerable power and influence, left behind legacies marred by violence, cruelty, and controversy. One of the most infamous women in history is Elizabeth Báthory, who we've covered in a previous episode, but if you have listen to that one Elizabeth was a Hungarian noblewoman from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Known as the "Blood Countess," Báthory is often cited as one of the most prolific female serial killers. She allegedly tortured and murdered hundreds of young girls, driven by a belief that bathing in their blood would preserve her youth. While some historians argue that the extent of her crimes might have been exaggerated or politically motivated, the brutality and scale of her actions have cemented her place in history as a symbol of extreme cruelty. Moving to the modern era, Jiang Qing, also known as Madame Mao, played a significant role in China's Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976. As the wife of Mao Zedong, she was a key member of the Gang of Four, a political faction that orchestrated widespread purges, persecution, and propaganda campaigns. Jiang Qing's influence led to the imprisonment, torture, and deaths of countless intellectuals, artists, and perceived political enemies. Though probably not a worry rooted in much truth today, being buried alive used to be a lot more common. In the absence of medical technology and morgues, ways of determining whether someone had really died ranged from pinching to burning. Even then, sometimes the person had simply entered into a coma or was paralysed. It wasn’t until 1846 that French doctor Eugène Bouchut suggested that they use new stethoscope technology to listen for the existence of a heartbeat that proving death became more certain. The history of slavery is a large and untellable story, full of tragedy and cruelty that spans both centuries and continents. Although it is difficult to pinpoint the exact year that slavery began, historians can trace the roots of this inhumane practice back roughly 11,000 years. The history of slavery spans many cultures, nationalities, and religions from ancient times to the present day. Likewise, its victims have come from many different ethnicities and religious groups. The social, economic, and legal positions of enslaved people have differed vastly in different systems of slavery in different times and places. I understand that this is an incredibly nuanced topic and can be viewed completely differently by different people. Historically, there are many different types of slavery including chattel, bonded, forced labour and sexual slavery. On the surface this episode may seem a little tame by my standards but I feel the underlying topic of slavery it’s horrifying enough. I’m not going to focus massively on the Atlantic slave trade, there will be a section on it as it is a big part of the history of slavery but I feel a lot the other history around this disgusting practice pales into the background, when people of every nationality and creed have suffered. There are many I love, tag, hide and seek, stuck in the mud, they're all up there on my favourites list! But, there's one I love more than any other, and it's called "The Cellar". It isn't too tough, really! All you need is five people, and a cellar. The people shouldn't be to difficult to "persuade" but if you need to "encourage" them a blunt weapon should be fine! Now for the game itself, make sure all the the people are awake before starting, tell them they will remain locked in there until one remains and give them enough food to survive for exactly one week! That way, when the food disappears, they will be desperate. Now they will fight to survive, there will be so much blood and tears that it will be difficult to not burst out into laughter! And then, when there's only one left, they will be THRILLED to find out the door was NEVER LOCKED TO BEGIN WITH! THEY SLAUGHTERED THE others FOR NOTHING! That I am lucky for having a brain where all the chemicals flow properly to their destinations like undammed rivers. When I complain about how bored I am without a little brother to play with, they try to make me feel bad by pointing out that his boredom likely far surpasses mine, considering his confine to a dark room in an institution. I always beg for them to give him one last chance. Of course, they did at first. Charlie has been back home several times, each shorter in duration than the last. Every time without fail, it all starts again. The neighborhood cats with gouged out eyes showing up in his toy chest, my dad’s razors found dropped on the baby slide in the park across the street, mom’s vitamins replaced by bits of dishwasher tablets. My parents are hesitant now, using “last chances” sparingly. They say his disorder makes him charming, makes it easy for him to fake normalcy, and to trick the doctors who care for him into thinking he is ready for rehabilitation. The Ustasha government pursued a policy of extreme nationalism and ethnic cleansing, targeting Serbs, Jews, Roma, and other minority groups.
