The Hinterkaifeck murders are not just a tale of brutal violence; they represent a complex web of terror, isolation, and unanswered questions. On a cold, moonlit night in late March, the tranquil Bavarian countryside, usually characterized by its serene beauty and isolation, became the backdrop for an unimaginable atrocity. S3 Ep 18S3 E18: The Mysteries of Rome
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 Hi everyone and welcome back to the dark history podcast where we explore the darkest parts of human history. hope everyone is well I’m Rob your host as always. Welcome to season 3 episode 18 The Mystery of Rome. Last season, I delved into the enigmatic world of Ancient Egypt, uncovering the secrets and mysteries that have fascinated humanity for millennia. But today, we shift our focus to another cornerstone of ancient history, a civilization that, on the surface, seems far more familiar yet holds just as many, if not more, secrets waiting to be unraveled. In today's episode, we’ll turn our gaze to the marble columns and bustling streets of Ancient Rome, where intrigue and enigma weave through every aspect of its vast empire. You might think that Rome, with its well-documented history and influence on modern society, is a civilization we understand inside and out. After all, Rome's legacy is everywhere—law, architecture, government, language. But if you think we've uncovered all there is to know about Rome, think again. Just like Ancient Egypt, Rome is a civilization that continues to surprise us with its layers of mystery, its hidden stories, and the unanswered questions that linger in its ruins and records. Beneath the grandiosity of Rome’s triumphal arches and the disciplined order of its legions lies a world filled with wonders that historians and archaeologists are still piecing together. How did a small settlement by the Tiber River grow into one of the most powerful empires the world has ever seen? What really happened to the Ninth Legion, that seemingly vanished from the pages of history? Today, we will dive into the mysteries that continue to intrigue and puzzle scholars—the unsolved enigmas that suggest we may only know part of the story. Before we start I just want to tell you about this week's podcast of the episode is the brutal, bizarre and boozy podcast. This is another brilliant podcast on my weekly listen list, but We will have a sneak peak of their show later on in the episode. S3 Ep 17S3 E17 Blood and Retribution: The St. Brice’s Day Massacre and Viking Vengeance
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 In 1002 as the dawn of the Middle Ages touched the shores of England, trouble threatened a fragile peace that hung over the country. In the land where the whispers of the wind carried tales of dense forests, vast moorlands, and fertile fields, Anglo-Saxon Villagers, in small and close-knit villages that dotted the countryside, began to speak of their deep seated discontent at the crown for their handling of the Danes who lived in the Dane law. The rhythm of daily life was deeply tied to the land, life was a constant struggle to extract sustenance from the earth. The fields in the south and east, rich and bountiful, promised harvests that could stave off hunger, while the rugged north and west demanded resilience from those who herded sheep and cattle. The lay of the land had been irrevocably altered in the 9th century by the foundation of the Danelaw, an area of northern and eastern England where Danish rule was the law of the land. From London to Chester, the influence of the Norse settlers was palpable. Yorkshire, East Anglia, and the Five Boroughs—Derby, Leicester, Lincoln, Nottingham, and Stamford—were strongholds of Danish customs and governance. the Norse and Anglo-Saxon cultures mingled, creating a unique tapestry of traditions and laws and culminating in mass conversions from Nordic pagan beliefs into Christianity. At the heart of the Anglo-Saxon land King Æthelred II ruled. known as Æthelred the Unready His throne was less a seat of power and more a precarious perch atop a kingdom beset by challenges. The Viking menace loomed large, with fierce warriors from across the sea seeking to carve out their own dominions. The king’s reach extended only as far as the loyalty of his local earls, men who governed vast swathes of land, collected taxes, upheld the law, and commanded military might in his name. The realm was a patchwork of alliances and feuds, where the king’s word held sway only with the support of these powerful men. The relationship between Æthelred’s England and the Danelaw was a delicate balance of peace and tension. Periods of uneasy truce were punctuated by bursts of conflict, as the specter of Viking raids loomed large. In his efforts to bring the Danelaw into the fold, Æthelred often resorted to paying Danegeld, hefty sums meant to buy temporary peace from the Viking chieftains. Yet, these payments were but a bandage over a festering wound, as the regions under Danish influence maintained a semblance of independence, resisting full integration into the Anglo-Saxon kingdom. As the people and the nobility cried for a response to the threat posses by the Norseman, Æthelred responded but with one decision he doomed England to the wrath of Scandinavia. S3 Ep 15S3 E15: Resonance of Dunkirk: The Heroes Left Behind
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 As the stocky and robustly built man determinedly strode into the Houses of Parliament on June 4th, 1940, an unusual hush fell over the chamber. Front and backbenchers alike waited with bated breath as his piercing blue eyes scanned the room with unyielding intensity. Clad in his iconic dark suit, bow tie, and round spectacles, he took a drag from his famous cigar and uttered the words. “The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.” The newly appointed Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, a figure of considerable debate today, delivered a stirring address to all members of Parliament following the success of Operation Dynamo. This daring mission had rescued approximately 300,000 soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force and French troops from the beaches of Dunkirk, snatching them from the jaws of Hitler's relentless army. S3 Ep 13S3 E13: Global Nightmares: Unveiling the Darkest Folklore from Around the World
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 Myths and legends captivate us as human beings, drawing us into their web of wonder and mystery. These stories, whether they originate from ancient times or contemporary culture, have a unique power to compel us, often leading us to dive headfirst into a proverbial rabbit hole of exploration and discovery. The allure of folklore is universal, transcending time and geography, and it is this timeless appeal that makes us yearn to uncover the secrets they hold. History, much like a double-edged sword, serves as both a repository of truth and a canvas for embellishment. On one hand, we rely on written accounts and witness testimonies to piece together the events of the past with a sense of accuracy and authenticity. These documented truths form the backbone of our understanding of historical events. On the other hand, history is often shaped and reshaped by those in power. Kings, queens, and rulers throughout the ages have been known to craft their narratives, presenting themselves in a light that enhances their nobility and valor. This tendency to manipulate the truth for personal or political gain leaves us questioning the veracity of the stories passed down through generations. In today's exploration, we will embark on a journey that spans the globe and traverses the annals of time, delving into some of the most memorable, gruesome, and downright terrifying tales of folklore. These stories, rich in detail and steeped in mystery, compel us to question: are they merely fanciful creations meant to entertain and instruct, or do they contain kernels of truth that have been exaggerated for effect? Join us as we scrutinize these legends, seeking to uncover the deeper truths that lie beneath their surface, and ponder the motives behind their embellishments. Are these tales simple folklore, or do they reflect deeper truths, enhanced and distorted for the benefit of those who told them? Let us journey together through the mystique of history's most intriguing legends. S3 Ep 12S3 E12: Hell Hath No Fury
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 Throughout history, several women have earned notoriety for their actions and the impact they had on society. These women, often wielding considerable power and influence, left behind legacies marred by violence, cruelty, and controversy. One of the most infamous women in history is Elizabeth Báthory, who we've covered in a previous episode, but if you have listen to that one Elizabeth was a Hungarian noblewoman from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Known as the "Blood Countess," Báthory is often cited as one of the most prolific female serial killers. She allegedly tortured and murdered hundreds of young girls, driven by a belief that bathing in their blood would preserve her youth. While some historians argue that the extent of her crimes might have been exaggerated or politically motivated, the brutality and scale of her actions have cemented her place in history as a symbol of extreme cruelty. Moving to the modern era, Jiang Qing, also known as Madame Mao, played a significant role in China's Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976. As the wife of Mao Zedong, she was a key member of the Gang of Four, a political faction that orchestrated widespread purges, persecution, and propaganda campaigns. Jiang Qing's influence led to the imprisonment, torture, and deaths of countless intellectuals, artists, and perceived political enemies. Her actions contributed to one of the darkest periods in Chinese history, marked by cultural destruction and mass suffering. we've got a few exciting things coming up on the show over the next month or two firstly I be working for the past couple of weeks with another podcast called the rainy day rabbit holes, this is a brilliant podcast hosted by Shea and Jody and its all about the history of the pacific northwest. Towards the end of next months we will be doing a feed swap where one of their episodes will be realised here and vice versa. The ladies delve into anything from the Seattle Coffee wars to mysterious severed wash up on beaches in the pacific northwest, but they always keep it light hearted with their infectious humour, I have literally binged every episode. So please go and give them a listen they are brilliant. Secondly, soon I will be doing a collaboration with another brilliant show called Headlines and History with Jon Molik. Jon is a great guy who is an intelligence officer and his show is about current affairs and the history behind them. If you want to try and make sense of what is going on in the world Headlines and History is the show to listen two. I will be giving you a sneak peak of Jon’s show later in the episode. Whether over land, resources, or politics, human beings have always managed to find new reasons to wage war against one another. Often as part of larger conflicts or wars, countless individual battles have ensued throughout history. Some are short and relatively uneventful while others changed the fate of entire nations and people. All battles are terrible, but some have managed to stand out in history as a particularly horrendous loss of human life. The calculation of the deadliest wars and whether they are becoming more lethal has sparked academic discussion. Factors such as technological advancements, weaponry, and population growth contribute to the significant loss of life observed in wars, particularly in the 20th century. With this intricate backdrop, identifying the deadliest battles within these wars can pose a challenge. It's worth recalling Mark Twain's popularized phrase about "lies, damned lies, and statistics," highlighting the complexity of such analysis. Hi everyone and welcome back to the dark history podcast where we explore the darkest parts of human history. hope everyone is well I’m Rob your host as always. Welcome to season 3 episode 11 Unleashing Hell: Exploring History's Most Devastating Battles. Now we all know that this episode could be saturated with battles from World War 1 and World War 2, hell I could probably make an episode and each, but I thought that I would incorporate some battles in different time periods, so the battles of Passchendale or Okinawa won't be here, even though these were horrific. I know I said in the last episode I may struggle to get this out but I work my backside off to get it to you on time so hopefully you enjoy it as I'm sunning myself on my holiday. S3 Ep 10S3 E10: Shattered Homeland: Exploring the Trail of Tears
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 In the early 1830s, the landscape of the southeastern United States was home to a vibrant mosaic of Native American cultures, encompassing approximately 125,000 individuals who resided on expansive territories spanning Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, and Florida. These lands held profound significance, having been inhabited and nurtured by their ancestors for countless generations. However, as the decade drew to a close, the once-thriving communities faced a harrowing fate. Driven by the insatiable demand for cotton and the relentless expansion of white settlers, the federal government intervened to forcibly relocate these indigenous peoples. Under the guise of manifest destiny and economic progress, Native Americans were uprooted from their ancestral homelands. The government's actions were driven by the interests of white settlers seeking to exploit the fertile lands for agricultural endeavors, particularly cotton cultivation. This precipitated a series of devastating events, culminating in the infamous Trail of Tears—an arduous and perilous journey that would forever alter the course of Native American history. Forced to abandon their homes and livelihoods, the indigenous peoples were compelled to embark on a treacherous trek across hundreds of miles to a designated "Indian Territory" beyond the Mississippi River. This exodus was marked by profound suffering, as families endured harsh conditions, disease, and violence along the way. S3 Ep 7S3 E7: Six Feet Under: Unearthing the History of Being Buried Alive
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 Taphephobia is the fear of being buried alive. Though probably not a worry rooted in much truth today, being buried alive used to be a lot more common. In the absence of medical technology and morgues, ways of determining whether someone had really died ranged from pinching to burning. Even then, sometimes the person had simply entered into a coma or was paralysed. It wasn’t until 1846 that French doctor Eugène Bouchut suggested that they use new stethoscope technology to listen for the existence of a heartbeat that proving death became more certain. Unfortunately for the poor souls in these stories, they weren’t so lucky. Being buried alive is a primal fear that grips one’s very core, triggering a cascade of panic and terror. Imagine, if you will, the suffocating darkness pressing in around you, the weight of soil bearing down like an insurmountable force. With each breath, desperation tightens its grip, fueling frantic attempts to claw through the earth above or pound scratch at the thick wood coffin. Your heart races, pounding against your ribcage as adrenaline courses through your veins, urging you to fight against the inevitable fate that threatens to consume you. Every moment feels like an eternity as you struggle against the confines of your earthen prison, driven by the primal instinct to survive. But with each passing second, hope dwindles, and the chilling realization sets in that escape may be impossible, condemning you to a fate of eternal darkness and solitude. S3 Ep 5S3 E5: Into the Abyss: Exploring the Secrets of the Bermuda Triangle
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil’s Triangle, has long been a subject of fascination and speculation due to its reputation for unexplained disappearances of ships and aircraft. This enigmatic stretch of ocean is roughly bounded by Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico, covering an area of about 500,000 square miles. The Triangle is most famous for its alleged ability to make things vanish. For centuries, more than 50 ships and 20 aircraft along with all of their passengers have disappeared in the large triangular area of the Atlantic Ocean. Reports of disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle can be dated back to Christopher Columbus, with documented records of missing ships from as early as 1800. Despite this, we’re still no closer to any answers about why this particular stretch of open water is the location of many ship and aircraft disappearances. Despite the allure of these mysteries, skeptics argue that the Bermuda Triangle’s reputation is largely inflated, pointing out that its reported disappearances are not significantly higher than in other heavily trafficked areas of the world’s oceans. Many incidents attributed to the Triangle can be explained by human error, equipment malfunction, or natural phenomena. Nevertheless, the attraction of the Bermuda Triangle persists, captivating the imagination of people around the world and inspiring countless books, films, and documentaries. While the truth behind its mysteries may never be fully unraveled, the legend of the Bermuda Triangle continues to spark curiosity and speculation, reminding us of the enduring enticement of the unknown. S2 Ep 23S2 E23: The Denial Of Slaughter: The Armenian Genocide
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 Armenia, located in the South Caucasus region, is a landlocked country with a rich history dating back to ancient times. The country boasts a distinctive cultural heritage, Armenian history spans thousands of years, marked by a unique cultural and historical trajectory. One of the world's oldest civilizations, Armenians have faced various empires, invasions, and periods of independence. Notably, they adopted Christianity as a state religion in 301 ce, making Armenia the first nation to do so. Throughout history, Armenians have endured foreign rule, including the Persian, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires. The Republic of Armenia emerged in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union, bringing a new chapter to Armenian history. The ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and geopolitical dynamics continue to shape the nation's contemporary narrative. Despite historical challenges, Armenia has a resilient spirit and is known for its monasteries, stunning landscapes, and contributions to world literature and art. Through out the highs and lows of Armenian history one event has inflicted a nasty wound that has festered for almost a century and that its the Armenian genocide. Hi everyone and welcome back to the dark history podcast where we explore the darkest parts of human history. hope everyone is well I’m Rob your host as always. Welcome to the new episode, The Denial Of Slaughter: The Armenian Genocide. The Armenian Genocide refers to the systematic extermination of the Armenian population by the Ottoman Empire during World War I, it started in 1915 and was around until 1923. The Ottoman government, under the rule of the Young Turks subjected Armenians to mass killings, forced labor, and deprivation. The term “genocide” was later coined to describe these acts, as it involved the intentional destruction of a specific ethnic group. While recognized as genocide by many countries and scholars, Turkey disputes this label, acknowledging the deaths but attributing them to wartime conditions and denying a systematic intent to eliminate the Armenian population. The recognition of the Armenian Genocide remains a contentious and sensitive international issue. S2 Ep 22S2 E22: The History Of Slavery: Mans Ownership Of Fellow Men
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 Hi everyone and welcome back to the dark history podcast where we explore the darkest parts of human history. hope everyone is well I’m Rob your host as always. Welcome to the new episode, the history of Slavery: Man’s ownership of other men. The history of slavery is a large and untellable story, full of tragedy and cruelty that spans both centuries and continents. Although it is difficult to pinpoint the exact year that slavery began, historians can trace the roots of this inhumane practice back roughly 11,000 years. The history of slavery spans many cultures, nationalities, and religions from ancient times to the present day. Likewise, its victims have come from many different ethnicities and religious groups. The social, economic, and legal positions of enslaved people have differed vastly in different systems of slavery in different times and places. I understand that this is an incredibly nuanced topic and can be viewed completely differently by different people. Historically, there are many different types of slavery including chattel, bonded, forced labour and sexual slavery. On the surface this episode may seem a little tame by my standards but I feel the underlying topic of slavery it’s horrifying enough. I’m not going to focus massively on the Atlantic slave trade, there will be a section on it as it is a big part of the history of slavery but I feel a lot the other history around this disgusting practice pales into the background, when people of every nationality and creed have suffered. S2 Ep 21S2 E21: The Halloween Special: The Tamers Of The Black Cat
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 Hi everyone and welcome back to the dark history podcast where we explore the darkest parts of human history. I hope everyone is well I’m Rob your host as always. Welcome to the new episode and the eagerly awaited Halloween special well I hope the eagerly awaited Halloween special anyway. Strap yourselves in because this is going to be a monster episode pun most defiantly intended. I hope you all enjoyed the modernised rendition of Edgar Allen Poe’s the black cat, I know it is sac religious to change the works of a gothic genius such as Edgar Allan Poe but if anyone has read the original black cat story or The Raven, for example, you will see that the language and style of writing is incredibly different to ours nowadays so please forgive me for trying to make it a little easier for a illiterate dumb brute such as myself. After that Hugh Caviat lets get down to the episode. Last year our Halloween special was about the story of the pendal witches and their trials and tribulations. I chose this as this is relatively close to where I live. In keeping with this tradition of witches on Halloween and to take into account the demographic of my listeners, I thought would bring you the most infamous witch trials of all the Salem witch trials, but then I though no! this topic has been well-trodden. So I pondered and pondered and tried to delve into obscurity and what did I come out with? More witch trials…. Yep…. more witch trials, but these witch trials are slightly more obscure and showcase the shear brutality that humans can inflict. Obligatorily I must warn you this Halloween special is not for the faint hearted we are about to descend into a rabbit hole of some of the most darkest tales imaginable, nothing and nobody was off limits in these stories no matter the age. So with that warning out the way please turn off those lights sit back and relax under the blanker for the final part of our spooky season specials and more dark history. *** Patreon link patreon.com/Darkhistory2021 *** Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/darkhistorypod?mibextid=LQQJ4d Discord https://discord.gg/3mHPd3xg Email: [email protected] Tiktok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMLSvwJJV/ YouTube :https://youtube.com/c/DarkHistory2021 TSupport the show *** Patreon link https://patreon.com/Darkhistory2021?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=join_link *** Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/dark-history?ref_id=36220 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/darkhistorypod?mibextid=LQQJ4d Discord https://discord.gg/3mHPd3xg Email: [email protected] Tiktok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMLSvwJJV/ YouTube :https://youtube.com/c/DarkHistory2021 Twitter: @darkhistory2021 Instagram: @dark_history21

S2 Ep 20S2 E20: Spooky Season special: The Truth Behind Horror Movies
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 I just love playing games, they're my favorite! There are many I love, tag, hide and seek, stuck in the mud, they're all up there on my favourites list! But, there's one I love more than any other, and it's called "The Cellar". It isn't too tough, really! All you need is five people, and a cellar. The people shouldn't be to difficult to "persuade" but if you need to "encourage" them a blunt weapon should be fine! Now for the game itself, make sure all the the people are awake before starting, tell them they will remain locked in there until one remains and give them enough food to survive for exactly one week! That way, when the food disappears, they will be desperate. Now they will fight to survive, there will be so much blood and tears that it will be difficult to not burst out into laughter! And then, when there's only one left, they will be THRILLED to find out the door was NEVER LOCKED TO BEGIN WITH! THEY SLAUGHTERED THE others FOR NOTHING! Overall, this game is fantastic for boring days when there's nothing better to do, so go ahead and try! I promise I it will be fun. Hi everyone and welcome back to the dark history podcast where we explore the darkest parts of human history. hope everyone is well I’m Rob your host as always. Welcome to the new episode, again I hope you enjoy our short little ghost story to start, This is the last instalment of our spooky season special before our Halloween episode on Tuesday and I guarantee its one not to be missed. Today's episode if you hadn't already guessed is about horror movies, these films are something of a favourite of mine and I can watch any type, even the really shite b roll one none of them are off limits. Sometimes these movies are incredibly grotesque and gore-filled, some are more supernatural in nature and some are just downright messed up, I'm talking about the terrifier series there, but one thing we tell ourselves before we got to sleep is “they are just films and they are not really” well unfortunately that isn't always the case. S2 Ep 19S2 E19: Spooky Season Special: The Worlds Haunted Places
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 A father went to say good night to his son, as it was routine since he knew his son would have trouble sleeping if he didn’t. It was a sort of silent tradition between them, one he never forgot to attend. The room was dimly lit by the lamp, but the father could clearly see there was something unusual about his son tonight. He looked the same, just with a huge grin that drew from ear to ear. “You okay, buddy?” he asked. The son nodded, still grinning, before saying, “Daddy, check for monsters under my bed.” The father chuckled and got on his knees to take a look. There, under the bed, was his son. His real son. Pale, trembling, and scared to death. He whispered, “Daddy, there’s someone on my bed.” Hi everyone and welcome back to the dark history podcast where we explore the darkest parts of human history. hope everyone is well I’m Rob your host as always. S2 Ep 17S2 E17: Spooky Season Special: Talking To Demons
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 I hate it when my brother Charlie has to go away. My parents constantly try to explain to me how sick he is. That I am lucky for having a brain where all the chemicals flow properly to their destinations like undammed rivers. When I complain about how bored I am without a little brother to play with, they try to make me feel bad by pointing out that his boredom likely far surpasses mine, considering his confine to a dark room in an institution. I always beg for them to give him one last chance. Of course, they did at first. Charlie has been back home several times, each shorter in duration than the last. Every time without fail, it all starts again. The neighborhood cats with gouged out eyes showing up in his toy chest, my dad’s razors found dropped on the baby slide in the park across the street, mom’s vitamins replaced by bits of dishwasher tablets. My parents are hesitant now, using “last chances” sparingly. They say his disorder makes him charming, makes it easy for him to fake normalcy, and to trick the doctors who care for him into thinking he is ready for rehabilitation. That I will just have to put up with my boredom if it means staying safe from him. I hate when Charlie has to go away. I have to presented to be good until he's back. Hi everyone and welcome back to the dark history podcast where we explore the darkest parts of human history. hope everyone is well I’m Rob your host as always. Welcome to the new episode, I hope you enjoy our short little ghost story to start, as Halloween is upon us over the next month we will be taking a more supernatural path, with an episode every week up to our Halloween special. This if the first installment of our spooky season specials and where better to start than demons and demonic possession? Whatever your beliefs are in demonic possession or demons as a whole you have to admit that listening to accounts makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end, because weather you believe or not nobody actually truly know what happens after we die. While demonic possession remains a belief held by some, it is important to note that in modern times, many cases that were once attributed to possession have been reinterpreted as mental or medical disorders. Regardless of one’s beliefs, the concept of demonic possession continues to be a captivating and unsettling aspect of human culture and mythology, evoking both fascination and fear . Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 Hi everyone and welcome back to the dark history podcast where we explore the darkest parts of human history. hope everyone is well I’m Rob your host as always. Welcome to the new episode, The Franco-Prussian War, The battlefield of the Franco-Prussian War was a harrowing and haunting landscape, marked by the devastation and brutality of 19th-century warfare. Stretching across northeastern France, particularly around areas like Sedan and Metz, this war zone bore witness to a clash of two formidable European powers in the summer and autumn of 1870. The War was a clash of industrialized warfare meets 19th-century military tactics. It was a place where the old world of cavalry charges and colorful uniforms met the new world of rapid-firing rifles and artillery, leaving behind a life scarred by death, destruction, and despair. Now this war is quite obscure nowadays, but I'm not bringing this to your attention to be some sort of hipster, oh no, my dear listeners, this war should be known far and wide not lost to the pages of time. You see this war would create scars, wounds and grudges that would fester until the world was set on a path to the war to end all wars and have massive ramifications for the Second World War. S2 Ep 15S2 E15: Dark Biography: Burke and Hare The Anatomy Killers
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 In the dimly lit streets of 19th-century Edinburgh, a thick shroud of fog hung in the air, casting an eerie atmosphere over the city. The gas lamps flickered, their feeble glow barely piercing the veil of mist. It was a night where secrets thrived, and malevolence concealed itself in the shadows. On one such fog-choked evening, two men, slinked through the cobblestone alleys tea chest in hand weighed down with tonight’s spoils. As they moved quickly down roads, streets and avenues, their breath visible in the frigid air, They arrive at the door of 10 Surgeon Square. A knock at this door will bring a tidy sum for their ill-gotten gains, Gains that were alive several hour previous. After the doctor answered and money was paid the poor persons remains would lay on the doctor's table ready for dissection. Hi everyone and welcome back to the dark history podcast where we explore the darkest parts of human history. hope everyone is well I’m Rob your host as always. Welcome to the new episode, The Dark Biography of Burke and Hare the anatomy killers, Of course, some people here will be familiar with our two protagonists and some may not, I do guarantee that the real story is a lot darker than the movie staring Simon Pegg, I must admit if you haven’t seen it go watch it, it’s brilliant. Burke and Hare were two notorious 19th-century Scottish murderers who became infamous for selling cadavers to medical schools in Edinburgh. They lured vulnerable individuals, killed them, and then sold the bodies for dissection, taking advantage of the high demand for anatomical specimens. Their gruesome crimes eventually led to their capture and the subsequent public outrage and legal proceedings, making them infamous figures in the history of crime. S2 Ep 13S2 E13: The Ustasha : World War 2 Forgotten Evil
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 Croatia, located in southeastern Europe along the Adriatic Sea, is known for its stunning coastline, picturesque islands, and historic cities. The country boasts a diverse landscape that includes rocky shores, pristine beaches, and lush national parks. The ancient city of Dubrovnik, with its well-preserved walls and charming streets, is a highlight. Inland, you'll find rolling hills, vineyards, and historic towns like Split with its Roman influence. Croatia's rich cultural heritage, combined with its natural beauty, makes it a popular destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and exploration. Behind the some what idyllic persona the modern country has now it’s history has an uglier face. The evils of war shone light on this face during The wars of Yugoslavia which showed the lengths that some can go to in a bid for independence and retribution, as ethnic cleansing and war crimes prevailed throughout that conflicts. Before all of this pain and torment there was and earlier scare, a scare that has been forgotten or well hidden, a scare that has festered behind the many taboos that arose during the Second World War, a scare that not even the nazi themselves could contain once they’ed open Pandora’s box. Hi everyone and welcome back to the dark history podcast where we explore the darkest parts of human history. hope everyone is well I’m Rob your host as always. Welcome to the new episode, The Ustacha: World war 2 forgotten evil, yeah this one is going to be dark and I mean very dark, So the usual obligatory warnings apply. I am not one to sensors the harsh truth of topics that I have covered, I have become somewhat desensitized what I read and research but this one is horrendous. If you are continuing with this episode I will begin. During World War II, Croatia was part of the Axis Powers and established the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) in 1941 under the leadership of the Ustasha regime. The NDH was a puppet state aligned with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. The Ustasha government pursued a policy of extreme nationalism and ethnic cleansing, targeting Serbs, Jews, Roma, and other minority groups. I know what your think, Rob this is no different to any other fascist ideology of the time, and in some respects you are right but the depths of evil this government went to had the Nazis cutting ties with their own creation because they were to extreme. S2 Ep 12S2 E12: The Land Of Blood: The British Empire In Africa
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 The British Empire was a vast and influential colonial power that existed from the 16th to the 20th centuries. At its peak, it encompassed territories across six continents, with Britain serving as the center of power. The empire was characterized by its immense territorial holdings, spanning diverse regions such as North America, India, Africa, the Caribbean, Australia, and parts of Southeast Asia. It was fueled by exploration, trade, and colonization, facilitated by advancements in naval technology and a drive for economic dominance. The British Empire left a significant imprint on the world, shaping the cultures, economies, and political structures of the territories under its control. It introduced the English language, legal systems, educational institutions, and infrastructure in many regions, leaving a lasting legacy that is still evident today. The empire's impact, however, was not without controversy. The process of colonization often involved the displacement and exploitation of indigenous populations, leading to cultural assimilation and loss. The empire's economic practices, such as the Atlantic slave trade and resource extraction, had profound and lasting effects on the territories involved. Over time, the British Empire experienced a shift in global dynamics and faced challenges from various nationalist movements and anti-colonial sentiments. The empire eventually dissolved as former colonies gained independence, marking the end of an era and the emergence of new nation-states. Hi everyone and welcome back to the dark history podcast where we explore the darkest parts of human history. hope everyone is well I’m Rob your host as always.Welcome to the new episode, the land of blood, this will run sort of a little mini series and will be about the numerous atrocities that colonial empires have done, these won’t be every episode but I will sprinkle them in for a bit of verity. The first few topic we will be about the British empire. As people can tell I am British and the topic of empire is quite divisive, some people take the stance that it was a patriotic thing and they have the argument that we brought structure and a civilized way of life to people. On the other hand some people look at it with disdain and argue that the taking of land with the barrel of a gun is repugnant. Which ever side of the argument you are on I feel there was good and bad sides to the empire, yes we did bring railroads, infrastructuBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! S2 Ep 11S2 E11: The Cult From Hell: Roch Theriault And The Ant Hill Kids
Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 Cults are groups that revolve around a charismatic leader and promote a set of beliefs or practices that are typically unconventional or extreme. These groups often exhibit manipulative tactics to control and influence their members. Cult leaders can use psychological, emotional, and sometimes physical coercion to maintain their power. Members may become isolated from friends and family, as cults typically emphasize strict loyalty to the group. Cults often employ various techniques, such as mind control, indoctrination, and thought reform, to shape the beliefs and behaviors of their followers. The consequences of involvement in a cult can be profound, ranging from psychological harm to even physical danger in some cases. I’m sure you will have heard of the famous cults such as the Manson family or heavens gate, but have you heard of Roch Theriault and the ant hill kids? Well the story that comes with this cult will show you the true depths of human depravity and the unbelievable control a person can have. The story of Roch Theriault and the ant hill kids, is a dark tale, As most cult stories are but this one is a special kind of darkness, I would go as far as to say that it’s worse than drinking the Kool-aid, just for the personal nature of the crimes committed by the cult, well mostly Theriault but you get my drift. Quick warning this does get very dark and the thing that went on in this cult are as bad as you can think. Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 As the sounds of crickets filled the warm and dry night air, I uncomfortably tossed and turn in bed. Was it the warmth that kept me awake or was it the fact Rwanda was again on a knife edge? The Two main tribes in our country have been at each other's throats for decades and I couldn’t help but feel the palpable tension blanketing the capital Kigali. Surely the violence that plagued the country in 1990 couldn’t return, surely the ceasefire signed by President Habyarimana Would hold. But as my eyes became heavy and I drift off to sleep, I remember seeing the calendar on the wall, tomorrow was the 6th of April 1994 the day our country plummets into the depths of hell for 100 days. Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 During the last four decades, the Crusades have become one of the most dynamic areas of historical enquiry, which points to an increasing curiosity to understand and interpret these extraordinary events. What persuaded people in the Christian West to want to recapture Jerusalem? What impact did the success of the First Crusade (1099) have on the Muslim, Christian and Jewish communities of the eastern Mediterranean? What was the effect of crusading on the people and institutions of western Europe? How did people record the Crusades and, finally, what is their legacy?Hi everyone and welcome back to the dark history podcast hope everyone is well I’m Rob your host as always. Episode 5 wow this season is moving fast. Episodes 5 and possibly 6 will be about the crusades it’s far to cast a topic for just one episode, and nobody wants to listen to me drone on for hours in one sitting. I did speak briefly about the crusades in episode 1 but as I said I feel we need to go into more depth. As we all know this was a time of around 200 years were religions were at loggerheads over the holy land. Send us a text. Thank you for your messages I really appreciate it 😁 Hi everyone I want to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Thank you for all your support through this first year of the podcast. I really hope you enjoy the Christmas special Christmas is a time for cozying up in front of a roaring fire with family and friends, with gifts for giving and receiving, a time to eat drink and be merry and over indulgence. For those who are more religious amount us it’s a spiritual time of year, a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. How ever you spend your time our contemporary Christmas has changed dramatically over the century’s, it’s be morphed, polished and censored into a commercial wonderland of craziness. Hi everyone and welcome back to the dark history podcast hope everyone is well I’m Rob your host as always. So we are here episode 23 and the last of this season and this year. I’m going to start with a couple of apologies before we continue so first of all this episode is late as I have just got over Covid, I was unwell for the first week then the second week my voice just wasn’t right so I decided to delay this episode for a week so I could give it my all. Second I’ve had a bit of a mix up with my podcast distributor seem I put some episodes for subscription only. When I realised my mistake they were unpublished so I had to re publish them and now the sequencing is all out of whack. So yah am sorry about those two things. For episode 23 I though I would change it up a little, being the time of year and all I didn’t really want to spread doom and gloom, but I also didn’t want to go too far off topic so I decided to have a look at some of the Christmas folklore from around the world. There is still a modicum of death a distraction but this week it’s tied in a bow. so without further ado please sit back and relax for more dark history. We spoke about the holodomor about a month a go now and if you haven’t listen to that episode what you doing go listen to it first, I’m only joking that episode isn’t connected to this episode, but I did talk about the kulaks and how they were arrested and taken to the gulag system unfortunate for those people the lucky ones were killed, so today we will be talking about the gulag system but one ordeal in particular the real hunger games or Nazino island, as a warning this does get very dark so listen with caution, with that out the way we will begin.Sources Cannibal Island: Death in a Siberian Gulag by Nicholas Werth and Jan Tomasz Grosshttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazino_tragedyGulag: A History of the Soviet Camps by Anne ApplebaumOne Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsynhttps://www.rferl.org/a/cannibal-island-in-1933-nearly-5-000-died-in-one-of-stalin-s-most-horrific-labor-camps/29341167.htmlhttps://www.seattletimes.com/entertainment/books/horrors-unearthed-in-the-unknown-gulag-and-cannibal-island/Links Email: [email protected]: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMLSvwJJV/YouTube :https://youtube.com/c/DarkHistory2021Support the show *** Patreon link https://patreon.com/Darkhistory2021?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=join_link *** Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/dark-history?ref_id=36220 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/darkhistorypod?mibextid=LQQJ4d Discord https://discord.gg/3mHPd3xg Email: [email protected] Tiktok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMLSvwJJV/ YouTube :https://youtube.com/c/DarkHistory2021 Twitter: @darkhistory2021 Instagram: @dark_history21
