Show Notes
Texass Education Freedom Accounts program received a massive response, with over 274,000 applications for up to 90,000 kids. Pre-kindergarten led with 36,000 apps, followed by elementary with 107,000. Priority tiers were based on income and disabilities, with low-income kids with special needs at 12% and those at or below 200% poverty at 32%. Forty-five percent of applicants were white, 23% Hispanic, and most families were middle to upper income. Houston, Dallas, and Fort Worth saw the most action, with 77% wanting private school spots. Parents can use up to $10,474 per kid for tuition, tutoring, or computers. Nearly 800 private schools signed on, but funding may run out by tier two, requiring a lottery for leftovers. Award notices are expected in late April, with cash hitting accounts by July.
