We all have NEGATIVE feelings sometimes--we are human! Sometimes we hate or REALLY dislike, sometimes we feel envy, sometimes we judge people by how they look or act or talk...BUT, if we are "smart", we realize that those feelings are not usually "helpful". What is helpful is trying to find out HOW to get rid of those feelings. Sometimes, we need to keep those feelings inside. If we don't, we might start a fight...or even a war. Today’s English expression and dialog: to be chintzy I’ll give you 50 cents each time you take out the garbage. What?! Don’t be so chintzy, dad! Whoa! My dad gave me 50 cents, so I’m giving you 50 cents. Dad, that was like 50 years ago!! Even when I have a little money to spend, I many times HATE to spend it. At the supermarket, there's two pieces of beef. One is "Top grade" is is $8, the other is "Regular" and is $4. I buy the cheap one. At the gas station, I always buy the cheapest gas. I keep my house temperature set at 18 degrees Celsius when it's really cold outside...to save money. Those aren't bad things, right??? Well, they are a bit severe. Do you know what a cigar is? It's a big, fat, brown thing that you smoke. Many Central American countries are famous for their superior quality cigars. Cigars are NOT cigarettes. Today’s expression and dialog: to give someone the benefit of the doubt Where’s Mark? He’s late. He said he got a flat tire. And you believed him. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. I really do NOT like when people PROMISE to do something for me and then they don't do it AND LIE! Not doing a promise, that can happen. But just tell me the truth. You forgot OR you were busy OR you didn't want to OR you didn't know how...but don't lie to me. Today’s expression and dialog: to sugarcoat SMT So, how’d you like my poem? Well…it was nice. Come on! Don’t sugarcoat it! Tell me. Um… Don’t quit your day job. So, a little girl was sitting next to me at the coffee shop yesterday. She was about 4. She was drawing a picture. While she was drawing, she kept looking at me. After a few minutes, she said, "Here!" and she gave me her picture. I had NO IDEA what she made. I thought it was a monster or maybe a dog... Then she told me, "It's you! Do you like it?" I told her, "This is the WORST drawing I have ever seen. You are a terrible artist." OF COURSE I DIDN'T SAY THAT! I said, "Oh, wow! I really love my hair! Thank you!!" And she was very happy. Actually, I did like the hair she drew. It was a lot of hair! But did I lie to her? Today’s expression and dialog: a knee-jerk reaction/response What do you think of the riots? Well, my knee-jerk reaction is to support the people. But? But, after I thought about it, violence with violence never solves anything. Nowadays we get information SO fast...we need to be careful. On my iPhone, I receive "Earthquake Alerts". The other day there was a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Tajikstan and I immediately started wondering if people were okay. I was quite worried. I went online and searched for information...but fortunately, I couldn't find any "bad news". I was relieved. But...I "wasted" 20 minutes of time...TOO MUCH INFORMATION. When I heard the "bad news", my automatic response was to "find more information". And...would that information help me really? Today’s expression and dialog: to eyeball something How many boxes are you going to need? I have no idea. Just eyeball your stuff and guess. Um…twelve, maybe. Are you good at guessing? If you look at someone, can you guess accurately how tall they are or how much they weigh? I'm NOT good at that. It's a skill. If I am lucky, in January, I will move.
