Ep 1763Castalia Is Closing On Their Own Terms

A craft cocktail bar with a ton of accolades (and appreciative fans) in Detroit's Midtown is closing. In this in-depth conversation with one of the founding partners, Dr. Kevin Peterson, we get into why it's good to embrace new chapters. Also, Peterson lines out how much time you have to come enjoy a final drink at what has been one of Michigan's best "garden level" bars. It's important, if you can, to try and give long-standing patrons time to say goodbye to the space they also shared. Kevin is also the author of "Cocktail Theory," A ssensory approach to transcendent drinks. https://sfumatofragrances.com/products/cocktail-theory More on Castalia: https://www.castaliacocktails.com/ Feedback as always - dailydetroit -at- gmail -dot- com or leave a voicemail at 313-789-3211. The future of rail and buses to and from other cities and Detroit may be here. Detroit's new multi-modal transit hub plans to include Amtrak service, with an expanded Wolverine Line connecting to Windsor and Toronto; as well as consolidate both the Amtrak station in Detroit's New Center and the intercity bus terminal on Howard in Detroit. $40 million has been allocated for the project, and site evaluation and design work is beginning. Beth Kmetz from Michigan Central joins us for a segment of the Daily Detroit podcast, sharing all the details that are set so far from this important announcement from Gov. Ep 1750Ford's Glass House History (And A Little-Known Futuristic Plan For Dearborn)

We've covered the news of Ford moving their headquarters to a shiny new facility… and demolishing the Glass House on Michigan avenue from a couple of angles. First, economic development and the business reasons. Second, the history of Ford's impact on Dearborn, going back a century. Now, in the third and final installment of the series, we're getting into the history of the Glass House itself. The significance of its architecture and the time in Metro Detroit in the country. We're also going to talk about fanciful plans that were drawn up for Ford more than fifty years ago that would have remade the look of the city into something almost out of science fiction. Dearborn might have gotten it's own rapid transit hub… and its own People Mover… as part of a massive redevelopment of that middle of the city that was Henry Ford's old land into everything from shopping to industrial to company campus. Our guest is Mark Nickita, FAIA. He's an Architect, Urban Designer, and President of ArchiveDS. He's also a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Ep 1740Ford's New Headquarters Is A Big Deal. Here's Why.

The "big story" around town is that the demolition clock has started on the Glass House in Dearborn, as Ford is moving their global HQ three miles down the road to a beautiful new building. Opened in 1956, the last time I visited the Glass House it was a bit long in the tooth for a company the stature of Ford. But, nostalgia is a thing and so many west siders are used to seeing it off of Michigan avenue for decades. In about 18 months, it'll be gone to make way for something new. The new headquarters will be twice the size of the current building and accommodate double the employees, bringing together engineering, design, and technology teams in one collaborative space. According to Ford executives Bill Ford and Jim Farley, the facility will house up to 4,000 employees with a total of 14,000 workers within a 15-minute walk. Plus, they're staying in Dearborn, and the new HQ will be across from the Henry Ford and Greenfield Village, Metro Detroit's largest tourist destination. Devon O'Reilly grew up in Dearborn and is active in the civic, business, and philanthropic communities in the city — joins to talk about why this is such a big deal, what it will help, and what might be ahead for the old Glass House space. In a future episode, we will check in on the history of Ford Headquarters buildings over the years. Ep 1737Chronicling Detroit's Bridge Saga (ft. Andrew Lapin)

Today, we're talking about the architecture of power in Detroit. We've got Andrew Lapin back with us – he's a journalist whose recent work with 99% Invisible on the Ambassador Bridge really gets into an important story about Detroit. It's a conversation about privatization, about legacy, and how decisions made generations ago are still shaping our lives today. We're going to be unpacking the historical baggage, the political machinations, and the almost unbelievable story of one family's grip on a vital piece of infrastructure. To me, it's a cautionary tale, but it's also a story about resilience, about what happens when a city starts to reclaim its narrative. Ep 1735Expanding From Automotive To All the Things ft. Jose Flores, Ancor

We're living in a moment of major transition, of businesses re-imagining themselves and our relationship to technology rapidly evolving. Today's conversation dives into that complexity with someone on the front lines of that change. Jose Flores, CEO of Ancor, is an interesting case study. We're going to talk about rebranding, AI, leadership, and what it really means to build something lasting in Michigan's ecosystem. Ep 1732Should A Sports And Concert Ticket Tax Come To Detroit?

One of the ways to address inequality is making sure you have the tools to do it. In today's episode, we talk about a recent report that Detroit (and other cities) should consider a tax on tickets to big sporting events and concerts. Many other cities do this to raise money that flows from the action downtown to the neighborhoods. The idea is a huge "maybe" as local sales taxes are prohibited in Michigan, and would need legislation in Lansing to even truly consider. But we're looking at the ways structurally things don't happen here that in other places, they do... and what reforms would be needed to fix things. We also talk about a visit to the new Saturn Coffee and Norris gets into his dislike of denim for fancier events. Ep 1731Is it time for Ranked Choice Voting in Michigan?

Ranked Choice Voting — where voters can rank their candidates in order of preference - has been gaining steam in parts of the country. But in Michigan? Though some local communities have voted to have it, the state's constitution is in the way. That could be changed through the ballot box - if RankMiVote is successful. The goal would be to give voters more choice, and have elections that more accurately reflect what voters want. Pat Zabawa, the Executive Director of RankMiVote, stops by to talk about why the time is now for Michigan to move to Ranked Choice Voting, or RCV, and the benefits. Ep 1728Our 89x Nostalgia-palooza

If you listened to radio in the 90s and early 2000s, and were into rock music, 89x was a regular stop on the dial. The blast of nostalgia of them coming back after a time as a country radio FM station on the air this week felt good as a pair of Millenials (one, an elder, on the cusp of Gen X). So we get into our favorite memories, local Detroit bands they played - from those more well known like Sponge and the veritable one-hit wonders, Charm Farm. 89x was always a platform for local music, seemingly to play more than other spots. Plus, the DJs, the Canadian Exports. All of it. And our first CDs we ever bought. Plus - Jer and Devon both went to the new Alo and have thoughts, plus the new Lunch at Olin in Downtown Detroit in our regular "Where we've been" segment, highlighting places we've actually tried or visited. Once a month we're going to start answering your questions in an "Office Hours" format with Jer, Norris, and special guests. Here are six Detroit-related or project-related questions from you, this month: 02:08 - Why do we cover the whole Metro Detroit region, not just the city of Detroit? Why do we think it's important we stay connected as a region? 06:51 - What will be the new Detroit City FC's New Stadium impact on Corktown? 11:14 - Why do you link to paywalled news sources, and why don't you post the screenshot of the article in the newsletter? 17:38 - What is something you thought you knew that now you know is different? (The people coming to Detroit, and the topics we cover vs. what we're "supposed" to do) 23:41 - What is going on with Detroit (goverment) only focusing on Downtown and Midtown and skipping everything else? Ep 1722AI, Deepfakes and Detroit: How Do We Deal?

Recently, a false story and AI-created image of Eminem and a student he promised to let rap with him went viral. Now, this story wasn't real but it was shared all over the "local" internet, with other variations including other artists. It really showed how many people, when emotionally motivated - looked right past it. This isn't the first (and it won't be the last) that AI, deepfakes, and false information has spread like wildfire. This got us thinking, maybe we should talk about it? And how do we navigate in this new era? AI-generated stuff is here to stay, but is AI overall a bubble? Nick Mattar, an expert in how people interact with digital media and AI joins us to discuss. Nick is part-time faculty at the Mike Ilitch School of Business at Wayne State and the founder of Marketing 1080. Ep 1715New Stadium Reaction, I-375 Thoughts, And A Mammoth Demo

Today's show is in three parts. The largest part is talking about the new stadium coming for Detroit City FC, AlumniFi Field - that will be rising near Michigan and 20th streets, down the road from the former Tiger Stadium site and tied into the Southwest Detroit and Corktown communities. Get the details, get rendering reactions, and more. Plus, the I-375 project that would have turned it into a surface level boulevard has been "paused" by MDOT. We discuss it from different angles, including the missed opportunity of not engaging the community properly, and the importance of not wasting a decade talking about things and instead just actively engaging and getting it done. And we end with some west side news, as Norris Howard tells us about the demolition of the old Mammoth building on Grand River.
