Ep 1299What if Detroit had built a subway? (ft. Jake Berman)
Metro Detroit may have been a very different place if a dedicated subway, light rail or elevated system had been built at one of the many opportunities, all the way up to the 1970s. I talk with the author of the "Lost Subways of North America," which covers our continent's aversion to mass transit. But it's not all doom and gloom - some cities are stepping forward, and Detroit and Metro Detroit can, too. Detroit Red Wings fan Norris Howard is in. 02:47 - There's a new deal that'll put Detroit City FC on national television more often, as well as the league they're playing in. Adding the league to CBS, Golazo and Paramount+ should help increase exposure to the area and the team. 09:23 - There's a debate in Lansing about solar panels and if the Michigan Public Service Commission can override local zoning in some cases to allow for more panels. Of course, solar panels are sometimes at the heart of the culture wars. Robin Runyan from Urbanize Detroit, Fletcher Sharpe and Shianne Nocerini joined me at the Cambria Hotel's soon-to-open modern Mediterranean fusion restaurant CIBO. Thursday night was their official "grand opening," though the hotel and amenities like 5 Iron Golf have been soft open for awhile. This renovation of WWJ's old radio and TV studio really adds some pizazz to an Art Deco masterpiece, and we did a first look of the whole thing. Ep 1275UAW Strike update, EVs and more (ft. John McElroy)
We are near the three week mark of the UAW strike against General Motors, Ford and Stellantis - a strike that's gotten international attention as part of a larger labor movement in America. So where are we with things? How is this all impacting - or will impact as it goes on - the Detroit region? What about electric vehicles? Where do we stand? Just how important are the automakers and workers to the local economy, and suppliers, too? There are a lot of questions and to shine some headlights on the road ahead, a conversation with John McElroy. He's a well-sourced, experienced industry expert who you can find on Autoline.TV. Plus, Jameson Williams may come back sooner. 15:02 - Athough there's a chance at the playoffs, the end of the season can't come soon enough for a Detroit City FC club that seems to have lost its spirit with a pair of bad losses where their biggest stength - their defense - completely fell apart. It's time with a new coach for next year for a rebuild to match the competitive level of the USL Championship. Are you up for a townhouse north of $7,000 a month? If you're moving into these, we'd love to hear from you because many listeners can not figure out who is. One problem is that it costs the same to build in Boston as it does in Detroit, but people can pay a lot higher rents in Boston.. https://detroit.urbanize.city/post/inside-corktowns-newest-apartments 13:36 - The old St. Patrick's church in Midtown was demolished by the Archdiocese. We talk about the missed opportunities to creatively reuse spaces like this. https://detroit.urbanize.city/post/historic-midtown-church-was-just-demolished 18:10 - We talk about steps forward on the $3 billion MSU/Henry Ford Health/Wayne State University development in New Center https://detroit.urbanize.city/post/massive-3b-development-new-center-takes-another-step-forward 21:39 - The Henry Street gets a loan from the state https://detroit.urbanize.city/post/henry-street-development-district-detroit-nabs-65m-state-loan 23:44 - Is the University of Michigan Center of Innovation going to actually happen? Confidence is dropping as the time ticks away and the university hasn't approved the development and there's $100m in state funding in the balance. Will this vaunted project quietly vanish off the board? We covered a lot of stories - leave your feedback 313-789-3211 or email us dailydetroit -at- gmail -dot- com Don't miss another episode! Ep 1269Psychedelic church raided // Trying Jollibee // Brewery closes
Jer and Norris are back from Chicago - Jer talks about trying Jollibee for the first time, and Norris saw the final international match of Megan Rapinoe. Then we bring it back home, talking about the raid of a psychedelic church on Detroit's west side. Turns out local decriminalization doesn't mean the right to sell or distribute magic mushrooms. And finally, Motor City Brew Works closed their Avenue of Fashion / Livernois location after a short run. Jer remembers being at the opening. We talk about a number of factors that may have hurt this project from the start, and the difference between what might work on Livernois between 7 and 8 Mile and Midtown, Detroit. Ep 1268The City Institute // Detroit Digital Inclusion Week
First, Jeanette Pierce joins me for a conversation around the City Institute. Known as a veritable encyclopedia of knowledge in the city of Detroit, Jeanette and the City Institute are helping communities everywhere share what's special about them. We also get into talent attraction and retention challenges - that some of the things we've been talking about for years are in the conversation now. The City Institute: https://www.thecityinstitute.com/ Then, Vittoria Katanski of Connect 313 joins me to talk about the upcoming Detroit Digital Inclusion Week starting October 2. Internet adoption is up in the city of Detroit - which is great. But it's not just connections, it's education that'll help people use that technology to change their lives. Ep 1266Downtown Detroit needs more people
There's an inconvenient fact: Downtown Detroit needs more people to provide some of the things that people seem to be clamoring for, and be an economic engine to help the rest of the city. Residents, specifically. In this episode, we talk about a recent real estate report that shows although downtown Detroit added residents, it pales in comparison to like cities for downtown. The pandemic has shaken things up - and we have to adapt to grow.
Ep 1265Inside the Detroit Auto Show // Electric Vehicle adoption slows // Reveals + refreshes
The Detroit Auto Show is on at Huntington Place in downtown Detroit. What can you expect to see? Eric Trytko joins us as he was at media days and checked it all out. We also get into some reveals and refreshes like the Ford F-150, as well as the slowing adoption of electric vehicles. Why is it happening, and what changes may be coming? Ep 1264What adults under 30 really want to stay in Michigan // Food hall first look // Redraw the lines?
Norris Howard is in and we're talking about a lot. 01:20 - Where we've been, as Norris Howard talked about the WhatChaWannaEat food hall and what international places it reminds him off. That said, he hopes for more vegetarian and vegan options in his community. 06:21 - Jollibee is coming to Metro Detroit. Have you been? 07:55 - There's a new study about what young adults - 18-29 years old - really want to stay in Michigan. There are some surprising results, and a lot of it is about women's rights and enforced gun control. Plus, African Americans feel the least positive about staying in Michigan. What groups feel like they're most ready to leave, vs. not. It's an interesting discussion. Link to poll: https://www.detroitchamber.com/under-30-poll/ 23:47 An opportunity for Wayne and Oakland Counties to vote on a millage to support the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the Detroit Historical Museum is making progress in the state legislature. 26:57 - Is it time to redraw the political maps? Do we need a taxing area that is focused on the more urban and developed areas of Metro Detroit, as unlike many metro areas, our population centers are spread across three counties instead of one? Ep 1263The power of civility (ft. Stephen Henderson + Nolan Finley)
Two of Metro Detroit's biggest political voices join us today in Nolan Finley and Stephen Henderson. Stephen as founding editor of Bridge Detroit and host of Detroit Today on WDET - and Nolan as editorial page editor of the Detroit News - they have very different views, but they're good friends and have teamed up to create the Great Lakes Civility Project. As a person who likes a good discussion, civility and how to make it happen is an interesting concept to me - and I wanted to talk it out with two people who have found ways to make it work. Nolan and Stephen are co-leading a discussing at Civility Night on September 27th at Henry Ford College. It's a free event and you can register here: https://greatlakescivilityproject.com/event/civility-night-at-henry-ford-college/ Plus, bonus Bourbon recommendations at 16:33. Ford Field is shaping up to be a great place for football, and Detroit's a football town. 15:15 Some Detroit City FC talk as the playoff push hits a roadbump, losing 5-0 in a disassembling to Phoenix Rising. Regardless if the team makes the playoffs, changes need to come on the field next year in an ever-sharpening USL Championship. Ep 1262Sullivan's Steakhouse first look // Treat Dreams Midtown closes // Shibam Coffee // Iron Gate
Yes, we know there's a UAW strike. But this early, there's not that much to add or discuss. So we're going to do what we usually do on Fridays and cover where to go around town. 02:07 - Devon highlights Dearborn's Shibam Yemeni coffee. 05:45 - Anthology in Eastern Market is a great birdwatching spot 07:15 - Sullivan's Steakhouse in the Book Cadillac opens! Devon has a first look and thoughts 11:27 - Where we've been - Iron Gate in downtown Wyandotte 15:41 - Treat Dreams closes in Detroit's Midtown after eight years. Locations continue in Madison Heights, Ferndale and Grosse Pointe Woods. 19:30 - Lululemon is temporarily moving to the old Under Armour space on Woodward while their spot gets remodeled. And we learn about Devon's pants. Ep 1261How could we switch to a four-day work week? (ft. Dr. Peter Berg)
Are you working too much? Are we all working too much? Dr. Peter Berg, a professor of employment relations at Michigan State University, discusses the growing popularity of the four-day workweek and its various forms. The demand for flexibility, especially among younger workers, has led to the desire for a better work-life balance. While these models have been around in Europe for decades, they are now gaining traction in the United States. We talk about different implementations like four ten hour days; working 32 hours a week or 36 instead of 40; and some of the ways employers could make things more flexible and easier on employees. Tune in to learn more about the benefits and implications of the four-day workweek. Ep 1260Labor gaining steam? // Hamtramck culture clash
This one might rattle some folks. Norris Howard is in straight from Brightmoor on this one. 00:53 - Norris Howard gets his wish as plans are in place to bring Raising Cane's to Metro Detroit (that's not the controversial part) More: https://www.hometownlife.com/story/news/2023/09/12/raising-canes-canton-new-location-ford-road/70830842007/ 02:50 - The UAW walks out at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network, with more than 1,100 on strike. Between this, the possibility of a strike, and general feelings - are we on the eve of labor power really gaining some traction? 09:22 Then we dive into what's been going on in Hamtramck and the rise of the right wing in the community. Their mayor recently posted about an appearance he had with former National Security advisor Michael Flynn, and there was conflict at the Hamtramck Labor Day festival where city leaders wanted lead the parade and not be next to an LGBTQ group. The changing demographics of the city are driving some to move out, others to not go there, and how the words by some of "everyone is welcome" aren't heard that way and wear thin because of their actions. The UAW is on the verge of a strike, and predictions are that it's going to happen. Deadline is in a couple days. There's a historic apartment rehab with affordable rents planned just west of Woodward. Ep 1257The Godfrey Hotel first look // Stock in blue Kool-Aid is up // Travel and autonomous talk
Welcome to Friday! Lions fans everywhere are a little slow today, and so are we after the late night win. 01:27 - Devon and Jer talk about the win, why the Lions are going to spoil some teams fun, and how the tables have turned. Stock in blue Kool-Aid is up. 05:03 - Devon, Jer and Engineer Randy previewed The Godfrey Hotel and rooftop I/O lounge last night in Detroit's Corktown, on Michigan Ave. just east of Trumbull. Lots of thoughts and takes. There's also excitement about The Hamilton, not ready yet but a steakhouse we're told by the same people who do Leila and The Phoenecian, both well regarded restaurants. 13:13 - Jer went to a travel industry event with Travel America and came away with some thoughts. One, Metro Detroit is a far bigger destination for travel than some local I think know; and that it's The Henry Ford / Greenfield Village that is the top tourism draw in the area. 15:42 - A sidebar on that converstaion is that there was a whole panel on autonomous vehicles and the like. Not said at this event, but piecing it together that it seems the powers that be are leaned in to autonomous vehicles as the future choice if you don't have a personal car with you as Metro Detroit's population and destinations are so physically spread out and fast transit like rail will be expensive. 20:22 - And then we loop back to a question about late night food offerings, and ask if the future of late night eats is restaurants located in hotels around town that have the built-in crowd to help support them. Not only for the game, but how do we feel about the season? And Norris dissents. 05:20 - A recent Federal ruling is a win against asset forfeiture by Wayne County and for due process rights.
