Exciting new scholarship from Noel B. Reynolds sheds light on how the scriptures were produced and how many of the ancient prophets were trained. Beginning with Egypt, their scribal school taught both administrative and holy writing. But they were also taught many of the other skills such as metallurgy (think Nephi) and military stratagem and physical combat.
