Right after we got back from Alex’s federal sentencing, Cup of Justice co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell broke down observations from the courtroom. Our intrepid journalists discuss the ins and outs of the 40-year federal sentence handed down to murderer Alex Murdaugh for his financial crimes. Why is the Court allowing Alex to NOT pay fines? Our mission is to get Stephen Smith's case to a place of solvability, but day to day, our goals are much smaller and much more focused on the tiniest of details. As Eric puts it, Liz and Mandy are pulling at the edges of this case in the hopes of finding more dots that can be connected by law enforcement. And so far it’s working. So far we’re finding new details and when you don’t have answers, every detail matters. That’s why it’s so important that law enforcement continues to throw every resource they can at Stephen's case right now. Yes, there are a ton of other cases out that deserve the attention of SLED and the AG’s office, but Stephen’s case is not only about finding out who killed him … it’s about a system that needs to redeem itself... for the victims and to the public. Also on the show today, we talk about a decision by the Connecticut Supreme Court that is long overdue. The decision sets a new standard for the release of police records — specifically the case files from crimes that are technically still open because they haven’t been solved. While Dick and Jim convinced the media — and frankly, way too many other people — that this hearing will come down to Becky’s credibility, Justice Toal said... Oh wait!! No it wont! Essentially, Judge Toal ruled that “prejudice must be proven and not presumed” — meaning she does not care about Becky’s problems, she cares about what was said to the JURORS WHO RENDERED A VERDICT. Former attorney Cory Fleming will serve 46 months in federal prison and pay $102,221 in restitution for his involvement in the scheme to steal millions from the Satterfield family. Moments after Judge Richard Gergel announced his sentence on August 15, Fleming voluntarily surrendered and was escorted out of the U.S. District Court in Charleston by U.S. Marshals. He requested to serve his time at FCI Jesup–a medium security prison in Georgia. It has not been decided where he will be sent.
