Alice Tams is a full-time illustrator, running her own business from a studio in London. She is the creator of a popular series of illustrations of birds wearing a variety of hats (#BirdsInHats)- which I have hanging on my bedroom wall, given to me as a present from my boyfriend. You can find her products online at her stop alicetams.com - or in the Etsy shop - and physically at one of her stockists. In December 2013, Alice drew a penguin in a christmas hat and jumper and had used it on a Christmas card. In December 2014, Alice was contacted by several friends that a jumper on sale in supermarket featuring a penguin in a hat and Christmas jumper. They all thought that Alice had licensed her penguin design because it looked identical to Alice’s design. So we talk about this and Alice’s learnings along the way. Estée is a blogger, author and founder of a very successful YouTube channel with over a million subscribers. I enjoy watching her channel for her series FemTalk where she discusses stuff from periods, to sex, to how to stand up for yourself but I also follow her for her beauty expertise. (I’m obsessed with face masks.) Estée has worked with a huge range of brands from Burberry to the Body Shop to Adidas. Nimko is the co-founder of Daughters of Eve - alongside Leyla Hussein - a non profit organisation, that works to advance and protect the physical, mental, sexual and reproductive health rights of young people from female genital mutilation practising communities. They recognise that (FGM) is a form of gender-based violence. Daughters of Eve believe that young people need to be supported holistically and work with women and girls and give them specialist support. In 2014, Daughters Of Eve received an award at the Red Magazine Woman of the Year awards for their work. They were also placed sixth in the Woman's Hour Power List. We recorded this is quite a busy coffee shop in Notting Hill and Nimko shares a lot about her life and work. She makes documentaries for Radio 4 and interview musicians and artists for The Culture Show. She wrote a book called Park and Ride, about Britain’s relationships with its suburbs and her most recent book is called Out Of Time which is a very modern look at the midlife crisis – delving into the truth, and lies, of the experience and how to survive it - and how a midlife crisis doesn’t necessarily mean running off with a Pilates teacher, or spending thousands on a trip to Bali to find yourself. A bit about Cheryl: her first book Torch in 2006, her second book, the memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail was published in 2012, and has been translated into more than 40 languages. It debuted at number 7 on the New York Times Best Seller list and was chosen by Oprah as her first selection for Oprah's Book Club 2.0. Reese Witherspoon plays Cheryl and Laura Dern as Cheryl's mother, Bobbi in the amazing film adaptation of WILD. The film's screenplay was written by Nick Hornby. In July 2012, Vintage Books published Strayed's third book: Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar, a selection of Strayed's popular "Dear Sugar" advice column, which she wrote for the web site The Rumpus from 2010 to 2012. The book debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list at number 5. Strayed's 4th book, Brave Enough debuted in the advice and self-help category on the New York Times Best Seller list at number 10. Dawn O’Porter has been my career crush for YEARS. I loved her first non-fiction book Diaries Of An Internet Lover back in 2006, and in 2007 I fell in love with her TV series (Super Slim Me and then Dawn Gets Naked, Dawn Gets A Baby and lots of others). Since then Dawn’s career has really evolved in many ways, with her best-selling novels: Paper Aeroplanes and Goose and now an adult novel series published by Harper Collins. She is currently writing a memoir (among other things), and co-editing the anthology Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture with the author of Bad Feminist Roxane Gay. She writes essays in many places from ELLE to The Guardian to BuzzFeed, and is someone with brilliant opinions, never afraid to share her truth in many different forms — she’s a really inspiring person who constantly emits positive energy online. Zoe Sugg AKA Zoella is one of the most famous YouTubers on the Internet. She is a fascinating 26-year-old #girlboss running her own online empire pretty much from her bedroom. She launched her YouTube channel back in 2009 and started connecting with other people and uploading "hauls" for anyone who might want to watch it. Fast-forward seven years later and she has over 10 million subscribers, two best-selling books under her belt and her own range of beauty products in Superdrug, sung on the Band Aid 30 single, and has a LOT of awards. We chatted at her Brighton home about all sorts of things: work, life, switching off, working for yourself and busting the myth of what a "proper job" is.
