Donna’s work has been recommended to me by so many people, through work of mouth, she is incredible and has worked as a coach and therapist for more than 25 years. She was formerly the head of teaching at the Hoffman Institute UK and she might be perhaps most well known for co-creating The Bridge Retreat, a six-day personal development experience, if you are intrigued, you can check out her website for more information and also the Amazon Prime documentary called Love(d) which shares the stories of 12 people during The Bridge Retreat as they take the leap to overcome grief and loss in their lives: https://loveddocumentary.comDonna's work has been featured everywhere from Psychologies, Conde Nast and Tatler. Jamie Bartlett (Replay): The World’s Biggest Crypto Con
This is a replay episode with Jamie Bartlett recorded back in 2019, he is the bestselling author of multiple books including The Dark Net and People vs Tech. In this episode we are discussing his podcast The Missing Cryptoqueen, a BBC Sounds podcast described by The Telegraph as ‘the most gripping podcast since Serial’: the podcast uncovers the mysterious story of Dr Ruja Ignatova who persuaded millions to join her financial revolution, a new cryptocurrency called One Coin that turned out to be a scam. Jamie Bartlett and Georgia Catt made the podcast trying to track her down and present a story of greed, deceit and herd madness. Definitely go and listen if you haven't already - and excitingly, Jamie recently revealed that he has written a book too called The Missing Cryptoqueen and it’s been released in June 2022, one to order now! #393 Louise O'Neill: The Problem With Having Online 'Idols'
My guest today is the author Louise O’Neill – today we are discussing her brilliant new book IDOL – a riveting darkly delicious story that interrogates our relationship with our internet heroes asking how well we can ever really know the gurus we look up to and their carefully curated profiles. It is written with Louise’s signature style, reminding me of her much applauded book Asking For It, a novel about the life-shattering impact of sexual assault, which published in 2015 to widespread critical acclaim. I think this is her best work yet, and I love all her books fiercely. #391 Francesca Specter: How To Be Alone (and Enjoy it)
My guest today is Francesca Specter, author of Alonement: How to be alone and absolutely own it, and the creator of the Alonement podcast. You guessed it, today we are discussing how to be alone - something I’m really passionate about as someone who values alone time, takes myself on solo trips and loves Julia Cameron’s suggestion of The Artist Date, where you take yourself on a date. Francesca speaks so brilliant about this and coined the term Alonement, which is different from being lonely - we talk about learning to enjoy your own company, what this means in the context of getting through a pandemic, tips and tools on how to embrace alone time if it’s something you feel afraid of and how we can speak about solitude in a more nuanced way. Hope you enjoy this conversation. #389 Sheila Heti: Art is the Opposite of an Algorithm
My guest today is the brilliant Sheila Heti, author of Motherhood and How Should a Person Be? In this episode we discuss her latest book Pure Colour, a new novel l about art, love, loss and time. It has been described as a galaxy of a novel: explosive, bright, huge and streaked with beauty. Sheila Heti has also been described as philosopher of modern experience - and I really enjoyed this conversation. Motherhood, her novel which grapples with the question of whether or not to have kids was a huge inspiration on me - and I think Sheila is one of the most talented artists of our time. #388 Dr Rafa Euba: The Truth About The "Happiness" Industry
Does happiness even exist? Dr Rafa Euba doesn't think so. He is a consultant psychiatrist, based in London, born in the Bask Country, Spain and after qualifying in Medicine, he became a psychiatrist in England. He has worked in many different settings, from exclusive clinics to slums, and his work on depression moved him to write a book on how we are not designed to be happy, called "You are not meant to be happy. So stop trying!" It is such an interesting book, looking at the myths of happiness, how our brains are not designed to keep us happy 24/7, the smoke and mirrors of self-help positive thinking industries, and how mixed and contradictory our emotions can be. #384 Clemmie Burton-Hill: The Power Of Classical Music
Clemmie Burton Hill on the podcast today. I became friends with Clemmie years ago now when she interviewed me at Hay festival about my book and ever since then we spoke about books, work, life and everything in between. Clemmie is a broadcaster, author, novelist, journalist, violinist and a lover of arts and music. On the morning of January the 20th 2020, only weeks before the pandemic turned the world upside dow, Clemmie suffered a catastrophic brain injury. One moment she was in a meeting in New York where she lives with her husband and two children. She is one of the most inspirational and magical people I know. Today we're discussing her brilliant book, Another Year of Wonder, a fantastic book making classical music more accessible to everyone with a song for every day. She's given me a song for every mood and every feeling that I can't really conjure up with words. #383 Jamie Klingler: Reclaim These Streets (Part 2)
Trigger warnings for this episode, we discuss Sarah Everard, violence against women, rape and sexual assault in this episode. If you are not in the mood to listen to these topics, please protect yourself and perhaps give this one a miss.My guest today is Jamie Klingler, writer, activist, keynote speaker and campaigner for women’s safety as co-founder of Reclaim These Streets. This is part two of this full conversation with Jamie (part one available here). In this episode we are discussing her activist work, how Reclaim These Streets started, how to show up and make change and what we can do to help. The group began as a collective of women organising a vigil for Sarah Everard in March 2021, to raise awareness, make change and to stand up for all women who feel unsafe, have been lost to violence, who go missing from our streets and who face violence every day. They campaign, hold vigils, rally together volunteers and speak and act on women’s safety and even recently took on the Met police. They aim to use legislation, education and community action to ensure no woman has to be asked to 'text me when you get home' again. I will leave all the information in the shownotes below, and thanks again to Jamie for coming on the podcast to chat to me about her work. Hello and welcome back to Ctrl Alt Delete! (Just a heads up in this one we talk about weight loss, alcohol dependency, mental health and big life changes.) My guest today is Jamie Klingler, born and raised in Philadelphia and has lived in London for almost twenty years working in publishing and events. She is a writer and speaker/campaigner for women’s safety. In December she was named #9 in the UK Communicators of 2021 by PR Week for her work with Reclaim These Streets. In this part one of the episode we discuss Jamie’s life transformation over the lockdown period where she gave up drinking and overhauled her life. In her words in the Guardian, she "gave up booze, took up running and found the strength and stamina to fight for a better future”. In part two of this episode we discuss her brilliant work as co-founder of Reclaim These Streets, a group formed to remember Sarah Everard and campaigns for women’s safety. I am fascinated by Jamie’s story and how she speaks so openly about how a big lifestyle change enabled her to do more work in a space she is passionate about. #381 Fearne Cotton: Finding Meaning in a Messy World
Fearne Cotton is one of the best-known and most popular broadcasters in the UK and is most recently known as the founder of the wellbeing brand and podcast, Happy Place. This came off the back of her first book Happy in 2017 which was a Sunday Times Bestseller. This was the first in a series of books talking about her own positive, and some of the not so positive, experiences with happiness. Happy Place Podcast now has over 40 million downloads and had over 10,000 people attending two Happy Place Festivals in the UK. I really enjoy Fearne's laid back, warm and approachable vibe and I love her curiosity. In this episode, we discuss her new book Bigger Than Us, which brings insight and wisdom from lots of different teachers, from intuition and energy to manifesting, ritual, prayer and star signs. #378 Clover Stroud: Writing About Life & Death (Part 2)
Welcome to part 2 of this conversation with writer and journalist Clover Stroud, as we discuss her third memoir The Red Of My Blood: a brutal, bold and brilliant artistic piece of life writing about family, survival, death and grief. I really felt like I lived this book as opposed to reading it, as Clover really goes deep and invites the reader in to experience it all with her. #377 Clover Stroud: Writing About Life & Death (Part 1)
My guest today is writer and journalist Clover Stroud. I adore her writing and outlook on the world. Her first book, The Wild Other, was shortlisted for The Wainwright Prize. Her second book, My Wild & Sleepless Nights: A Mother's Story was rated one of the 'best books of the year, 2020' by the Observer and the Telegraph and was a Sunday Times bestseller. And her third memoir The Red Of My Blood might just be my favourite of them all. In this book, Clover is looking at life, death and grief. She is asking the question: can death bring something good to my life? A few weeks before Christmas, Clover's sister died of breast cancer, aged forty-six. Her sudden death broke Clover's life into pieces. The Red of My Blood charts Clover's surreal and fearless journey through the first year after her sister's death. This is a really special book and really recommend you pick up a copy. #376 Madeleine Dore: Letting Go Of Productivity Guilt
Madeleine Dore is my guest today, a writer and interviewer exploring how we can broaden the definition of a day well spent. Her book I Didn’t Do The Thing Today is gentle wise and insightful look at letting go of productivity guilt and it is out now. It’s a truly wonderful look at how we unravel the relationship between our output with inner self worth. Her first book was called 'an urgent part-memoir, part-manifesto' about Black British motherhood. Her new book Sista Sister has been described by Cosmopolitan as "like the old sibling you wish you had growing up". She is a whip-smart, philosophical and inspirational writer, I absolutely love her work and was lucky enough to interview live recently at the Southbank Centre (thanks for having me, Candice and team!) Venetia La Manna (REPLAY): How To Slow Down
This is a replay episode with the brilliant Venetia La Manna, broadcaster, slow fashion campaigner. On her platforms she discusses issues relating to the fast fashion industry and climate crisis. I always learn a lot from her, especially on the topic of how to support garment workers and hold the fashion industry to account. In the first half we talk about her work in the slow fashion space and the second half is about how she ditches her phone at the weekend to enjoy a slower pace, so basically an episode on how to slow down. This is a replay episode! My guest today is Rachel DeLoache Williams, Vanity Fair photography editor and now author of My Friend Anna: The True Story Of The Fake Heiress Of New York City (all about her relationship with NYC scammer Anna Delvey. One of TIME magazine's must-read books of 2019. This book is the true story of Anna Delvey through her friend Rachel's eyes, someone you might have read about in the news, the fake heiress whose deceit and elaborate con-artistry deceived the Soho New York scene before her lies were dramatically exposed. This is Rachel's story who is still dealing with the consequences of being so betrayed. The pair met through mutual friends, and became inseparable. But after Anna’s debit card was declined in a Morocco whilst on holiday in a five-star luxury resort, Rachel began to suspect that her increasingly mysterious friend was not all she seemed. This book has been called Catch Me If You Can meets Gossip Girl with Instagram filters. Between Anna Delvey, Fyre Festival’s Billy McFarland (Anna even tried to scam Billy) and Elizabeth Holmes, whose start-up app duped the high and mighty of Silicon Valley, 2019 seems to have be the year of the scammer.Hope you enjoy this interview with Rachel and please do leave a rating or review if you did!Check out the book here: https://uk.bookshop.org/a/153/9781787478305 Hosted on Acast. #366 Julia Cameron (NEW): Navigating Worries, Doubts & Fears
My guest today is the wonderful Julia Cameron - again! She is a third time guest on this podcast and that’s because I just love her wisdom so much. She is a huge inspiration of mine when it comes to creativity and wellbeing, and she has a new book out, called Seeking Wisdom: A Spiritual Path to Creative Connection, which is a comforting, brilliant guide to stepping back and finding faith in your creativity again, and yes, in some cases a higher power. In the new book, she recaps on her recovery from alcoholism and addiction, its a deeply personal account of pain, healing and growth, showing the reader how to harness prayer (in whatever form that takes for the individual) to overcome our lives challenges and obstacles, and forge ahead towards becoming the person we are meant to be. It’s inviting and welcoming: she embraces her reader to believe in something again, and you of course don’t have to use the word God if you don't want to, you can use whatever word or concept you like. I also really recommend her memoir Floor Sample which is one of my favourite ever memoirs. #365 An Interview With Me(!): My New Book Disconnected: LIVE at BookBar
I’m excited to share this episode with you, this time it’s an interview with me! All about my new book Disconnected, which is out TODAY (January 13th 2022). I did an in person event at BookBar in London, a gorgeous independent bookstore that I recommend you visiting if you are ever in the area, and I was interviewed by the founder of the bookstore Chrissy Ryan. It felt amazing to be in person with people again after launching projects on Zoom for so long. We discussed many themes in the book; how to unplug without going cold turkey, why I don’t believe in guilt-trips or intense digital detoxes and why I think there’s a better way to create a healthy distance with your phone. We discuss our Internet selves, how to stay true to who we are online, what an e-personality is, how to slowly step away from society’s productivity obsession, how to realise when your devices are making you anxious and prompts on how to create space for yourself again. So I really hope you enjoy this conversation, and if you’d like to buy the book, in hardback, audio or e-book I have left the links below in the show-notes. Dame Stephanie is tech pioneer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. She also goes by the name "Steve" which she used to sign business letters to potential clients when they were not responding to her. If you haven't already, go and watch her Ted Talk "Do ambitious women have flat heads?" it is funny and moving and super interesting to hear what it was like being a woman in tech during the 60s. In this episode, we talk about her brilliant memoir Let It Go. In this episode we talk about workplace misogyny, making money, resilience, giving back, and why it's important to always keep learning. Philippa Perry (REPLAY): How We Internalise Our Parents' Voice
This episode is a replay from 2019 with the wonderful Philippa Perry. Since this episode aired she has started a new role as agony aunt for the Observer, answering reader questions and her responses are of course wise and wonderful. Her most recent book, The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read (and Your Children Will Be Glad That You Did), was a number one Sunday Times bestseller and continues to dominate the charts, a book all about what really matters and the vital dos and don'ts of parenting. Poorna's second book In Search Of Silence is out now, all about her deeply personal journey which asks us all to define what 'happiness' truly means to each of us. In this episode, we discuss the inspiration behind this second memoir, her wariness of self-help books, and what she's learned along the way. Sophia Amoruso (REPLAY): The Original Girlboss Reflects On Work
This is a replay with Sophia Amoruso. It was recorded back in Jan 2020 when I was in LA, back when we could fly around the world and interview people in person. Sophia Amoruso is the author of the 2014 New York Times Bestseller #GIRLBOSS, a book that chronicled her early life as the founder of fashion empire Nasty Gal — it was also adapted into a scripted TV series that premiered on Netflix in 2017. Reading Girlboss in 2014 was a real moment for me as its when I first made steps towards starting my own business. Since this episode aired, she has founded a new venture called Business Class, a brilliant toolkit for founders - I will link to it in the shownotes. In this episode we discuss all sort of things, the evolution of the #girlboss brand, taking risks as a brand builder, and how her idea of success has changed.
